Wir sind heute davon abgekommen. Mit Recht! Denn eine solche Frage gehört nicht an den Anfang, sondern an den Schluß einer gewissen Beschäftigung mit Mathematik. Erst wenn man bereits etwas von der Mathematik kennengelernt hat, erscheint es angebracht, sich einmal über die mathematische Methode, über den Aufbau des Lehrgutes und über seine Grundlage klarzuwerden. Es haben zahlreiche frühere Lehrpläne für höhere Schulen einen "wiederholenden Aufbau des Zahlbegriffes" in die Ober klassen verlegt. Es haben die Meraner Vorschläge und nach ihnen andere moderne Stoffpläne als Abschluß des mathematischen Unterrichts "Rückblicke unter Heranziehung geschichtlich€'[und philosophischer Gesichtspunkte" gefot:dert. Die preußischen Richt linien vom Jahre 1925 legten sowohl in den methodischen Bemerkungen wie in den Lehrplänen großen Nachdruck auf derartige philosophisch vertiefte Rückblicke: "Logik und Er kenntnistheorie finden einen Platz in der Mathematik. Auch die psychologischen Grundlagen des mathematischen Denkens soll der Unterricht berühren. Einzelfragen wie Zahlen- und Raumvor stellungen sind nach Möglichkeit philosophisch zu vertiefen- so heißt es in ihnen. Auch die Marienauer Vorschläge (1945), um wenigstens einen der neuen Pläne zu nennen, fordern: "Aufbau und Grundlage der Mathematik: Entwicklung des Zahl-und Funk tionsbegriffes, axiomatisches Verfahren der Grundlegung am Bei spiel der Geometrie, Ausblicke auf Logik und Erkenntnislehre.

Book excerpt: For most mathematicians and many mathematical physicists the name Erich Kähler is strongly tied to important geometric notions such as Kähler metrics, Kähler manifolds and Kähler groups. They all go back to a paper of 14 pages written in 1932. This, however, is just a small part of Kähler's many outstanding achievements which cover an unusually wide area: From celestial mechanics he got into complex function theory, differential equations, analytic and complex geometry with differential forms, and then into his main topic, i.e. arithmetic geometry where he constructed a system of notions which is a precursor and, in large parts, equivalent to the now used system of Grothendieck and Dieudonné. His principal interest was in finding the unity in the variety of mathematical themes and establishing thus mathematics as a universal language. In this volume Kähler's mathematical papers are collected following a "Tribute to Herrn Erich Kähler" by S. S. Chern, an overview of Kähler's life data by A. Bohm and R. Berndt, and a Survey of his Mathematical Work by the editors. There are also comments and reports on the developments of the main topics of Kähler's work, starting by W. Neumann's paper on the topology of hypersurface singularities, J.-P. Bourguignon's report on Kähler geometry and, among others by Berndt, Bost, Deitmar, Ekeland, Kunz and Krieg, up to A. Nicolai's essay "Supersymmetry, Kähler geometry and Beyond". He was the leading philosopher of the Vienna Circle, a group that was central to the international movement known as logical empiricism, which pursued the goal of making philosophy scientific and eliminating metaphysics that went beyond the limits of what humans can coherently comprehend. Carnap was not only well-versed in this area of thought but also contrary ideas; he interacted philosophically with Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Edmund Husserl, and Martin Heidegger, and in his formative years he was influenced by the positivists Mach and Ostwald, neo-Kantians such as Cassirer and Natorp, and Husserl's phenomenology. Interest in logical empiricism waned in the decades following Carnap's death but was revived towards the end of the twentieth century; the wave of new scholarship that resulted identified Carnap as far more subtle and interesting than was previously understood. The complete fourteen-volume edition of Carnap's published writings builds upon these more recent interpretations of his philosophy. This first book contains Carnap's early publications up until 1928, none of which have previously been translated from their original German. The introduction and notes place the text in the relevant scientific and historical contexts, in addition to explaining obscure references or outdated notation and terminology. Carnap's neo-Kantian origins are more obvious in these works than in his later writings, and the overall figure which emerges from this volume is a very different Carnap to the caricature that many philosophers will know.
