In diesem Zusammenhang wird mehr und mehr der Ruf nach einer neuen Wirtschaftsethik laut, die diesen Ungleichgewicht ausgleichen soll. Doch das (überkommene) Modell des homo oeconomicus ist nur ein ethisches Konzept, welches sich mit der Rolle des Menschen in Bezug auf die Ökonomie befasst und mittlerweile ein komplexes und schwieriges Teilgebiet der Ethik geworden ist. Allein der Begriff Wirtschaftsethik wird in der Literatur aus zwei Perspektiven betrachtet: Erstens als genitivus objektus – als Ethik für die Wirtschaft, in der es um die Anwendung ethischer Grundsätze im Wirtschaftssystem geht und zweitens als genitivus subjektus – die als ethische Reflexion des Wirtschaftssystems verstanden werden kann. Zudem lassen sich die bisherigen Wirtschaftsethikkonzepte in drei Kategorien einteilen: In der ersten Kategorie ist das Primat auf die Ethik vor der Ökonomie gelegt. Diese Konzepte wie zum Beispiel die Christliche Sozialethik oder der Kategorische Imperativ von Immanuel KANT beziehen sich auf einen naturalrechtlichen Legitimationsgrund, während die zweite Kategorie wie etwa das Konzept des homo oeconomicus von Adam SMITH (Wohlstand der Nationen 1776) das Primat auf die ökonomische Rationalität legt.
