Book excerpt: The present study focuses on examining the hypothesis that auditory temporal perception deficit is a basic cause for reading disabilities among dyslexics. This hypothesis maintains that reading impairment is caused by a fundamental perceptual deficit in processing rapid auditory or visual stimuli. Since the auditory perception involves a number of mechanisms and temporal processing is only one of them, in the current paper, we tested, in addition to auditory temporal processing, also auditory intensity and spectral processing among dyslexic and normal readers. In addition, we examined whether poor performance of dyslexic readers in auditory temporal processing tasks results from a difficulty in working memory, by testing differences in auditory processing, controlling for working memory. Thirty-seven adult dyslexic readers and 40 adult normal readers performed a battery of tests measuring auditory temporal processing (gap detection and dichotic temporal order judgment), auditory intensity processing (absolute threshold and intensity discrimination), auditory spectral processing (spectral temporal order judgment) and working memory (backward digit span). Performance on auditory spectral and temporal processing task was poorer among dyslexic readers, as compared to normal readers, even after controlling for working memory, but no difference was found in intensity processing tasks. These results suggest that dyslexic readers exhibit a specific deficit in auditory temporal processing, which cannot be attributed either to general perceptual deficit in auditory processing, or to working memory. Several hypotheses have been suggested in an attempt to explain the origin of dyslexia, among which some have suggested that dyslexic readers might have a deficit in auditory temporal processing, while others hypothesized that dyslexia origins from a deficit in working memory. The current study was designed to test whether working memory and/or auditory temporal processing can predict reading ability in normal and dyslexic readers. Fifty-three adults were diagnosed with phonological dyslexia and 46 normal reading adults were tested on reading regular words, auditory temporal order judgment, and backward digit span. The results are that: For dyslexic readers, both auditory temporal processing and working memory are correlated with reading, even after controlling for their covariance. However, no correlation between reading measures, temporal processing and working memory are found for normal readers. The conclusions are that: (1) Both auditory temporal processing and working memory are significantly involved in reading among dyslexic readers; and (2) Dyslexic readers might use more different reading strategies than normal readers do, who apparently are not involved in auditory temporal processing and working memory while reading. Learning to read and spell requires linguistic skills, auditory skills and visual skills. Oscillatory 'temporal sampling' theory links the development of sensory and linguistic processes. The auditory system 'samples' acoustic information at different temporal rates, which for speech processing suggests that temporal information encoded by delta, theta and gamma oscillations is bound together in the final speech percept. Temporal sampling theory proposed a possible deficit in dyslexia in auditory sampling of the speech signal at syllable-relevant rates (< 10 Hz, delta and theta). This would hypothetically affect prosodic development prior to reading and syllable-based parsing, which would affect efficient linguistic skills and consequently reading development across languages. The visual system also samples information in the visuo-spatial field. In theory atypical visual oscillatory sampling could therefore be related to some of the visual features of developmental dyslexia. In this special issue, we bring together visual and auditory sensory processing studies around the general theme of oscillatory temporal sampling. Contributors were encouraged to discuss their findings within a temporal sampling perspective. The resulting studies cover a wide range of sensory processes, with findings both supporting and contradicting the theory. It is also important to note that studies covered a wide range of languages, and that the behavioural manifestations of a sampling impairment may differ both with language and over the course of development. Nevertheless, it is encouraging to see such diverse findings considered within a single theoretical framework, even if at the same time, it is apparent that an over-arching theoretical framework encompassing both visual and auditory deficits in dyslexia is yet to be achieved.

Book excerpt: Several lines of research have revealed a relationship between reading disorders (RD) and auditory temporal processing deficits. That is, subtle, yet rapid changes within an acoustic message are more difficult for individuals with RD to perceive than for those individuals with normal reading abilities, which negatively impacts accurate speech perception and, in turn, phonological processing and decoding abilities (Cestnick & Jerger, 2000; De Jong et al, 2000; Fink et al., 2006; Walker et al., 2006). However, researchers investigating a pansensory temporal processing deficit theory of RD have found conflicting evidence supporting the relationship between visual temporal processing and reading, specifically in regards to the magnocellular deficit theory of dyslexia (Chase & Jenner, 1993; Farmer & Klein, 1993; Lehmkuhle et al., 1993; Lovegrove, 1993). The purpose of the current study was to further investigate the relationship between pansensory processing deficits and subtypes of reading disorders. Participants included 27 children (ages 10-13) divided into three reading ability groups (i.e., normal reading, dysphonetic, and dysphoneidetic) based on performance the WRMT-R and Word/Nonword Test. Experimental tasks included gap detection, duration discrimination, and duration temporal order judgment tasks presented in both the auditory and visual modalities. When controlling for verbal ability (PPVT-IV), due to significant group differences, both RD groups (dysphonetic and dysphoneidetic deficits) demonstrated a poorer performance when compared to the control group on both the within- and between-channel gap paradigms of the auditory gap detection task. No significant differences were found between normal, dysphonetic, and dysphoneidetic readers on any of the visual temporal processing tasks. The current study failed to support the pansensory deficit of RD when reading groups were dichotomized across experimental tasks. However, when considering reading abilities as a continuum several significant correlations between performance on auditory and visual experimental tasks and reading decoding standardized measures were found suggesting that pansensory temporal processing is strongly associated with reading abilities. Results suggest that auditory temporal processing abilities are closely linked to phonological decoding skills in addition to sight-word recognition abilities for the young adolescents having reading disorders.
