Automatic/controlled processing theory assumes that human performance is the result of two qualitatively different processes; automatic and controlled processing. Automatic processing is a fast, parallel process not limited by short term memory. Automatic processing uses little subject effort, permits little direct subject control, but requires extensive and consistent training to develop. Controlled processing is a comparatively slow, serial process limited by short term memory. Controlled processing requires subject effort, permits a large degree of subject control, but needs little training to develop. Attention paradigms discussed include selective attention, focused attention, and attentional capacity. Conclusions from the application of automatic and controlled processing determines performance; paradigms suggest that: (1) performance differs to the degree that automatic or controlled processing determines performance; (2) performance improves with extensive consistent practice; (3) automatic processes are difficult to control; and (4) capacity reductions primarily harm controlled processing. The development of automatic processing is examined, and performance is seen to improve as a function of consistent executions.

Book excerpt: The early years of modern experimental psychology were marked by a considerable amount of research on attention, and much work was carried out in the laboratories of Wundt, Titchener and Helmholtz. For various reasons, research on attention declined from 1920 until the 1950s. Under the early philosophy of behaviourism, attention became suspect as a ‘mentalistic’ concept. At the time of original publication in 1969, however, much work had been done to quantify and make objective research in this area. This was of increasing importance in a world dominated by communication networks, and ‘man-machine’ systems, in which the human element is the weakest link due to the limits on the rate at which man can handle information. Following the publication of Broadbent’s Perception and Communication in 1958, work on attention had begun to pour from an ever increasing number of laboratories. This book is dedicated to summarising what we knew, and attempts to survey the behavioural research in vision and hearing which throw light on how we share and direct attention, what are the limits of attention, to make some general methodological recommendations, to review current theories of the time, and to provide a guide to the relevant physiological work. As far as possible, work on memory has been omitted. A bibliography of the major work to the spring of 1969 is included.

Three experiments were designed to compare performance in the two paradigms. In experiment 1, the effects of consistent and varied mapping of stimuli and responses were examined in auditory detection task. Subjects responded faster and made fewer errors under consistent mapping (CM) than varied mapping (VM) conditions, and the effect of memory set size decreased over practice in the CM condition. In experiment 2, performance in single-channel, selective-attention, and divided-attention conditions were compared under VM conditions for auditory target detection. There were large differences among the three conditions in contrast to results previously obtained under CM conditions (Moray, 1975). These differences were much larger in the auditory detection task than in an analogous visual search task employed in Experiment 3. An analysis of individual differences in Experiments 2 and 3 indicated that there is no general ability to divide attention. The results are discussed in terms of automatic and controlled processes involved in recognition of target stimuli. (Author).
