The experiments with temporally-coded auditory patterns showed how listeners' attention is influenced by the position and the amount of information carried by different segments of the pattern. Analyses of group signal detection included mathematical analyses, computer simulations, and human experiments. These analyses specified the effects on performance of team member ability, team decision rule, correlation between member judgments, and type of member interaction. The results of this research may be useful for improving the design of auditory display systems and for optimizing the performance of decision making teams.

Book excerpt: Several studies of temporal pattern perception were conducted using tasks where the listener discriminated whether two tonal sequences formed the same temporal pattern or which of two patterns was more rhythmic. In different conditions, the stimulus patterns were delayed, time expanded or compressed, presented at different frequencies and to different ears, or constructed of sub- patterns having different temporal correlations. Mathematical models of performance were employed to describe performance in these tasks. Further work was accomplished extending signal detection theory to the performance of statistically ideal and (certain) non-ideal groups. Other experiments were conducted on the processing of visual display elements as a function of element reliability and perceptual structure.

Book excerpt: The systematic scientific investigation of human perception began over 130 years ago, yet relatively little is known about how we identify complex patterns. A major reason for this is that historically, most perceptual research focused on the more basic processes involved in the detection and discrimination of simple stimuli. This work progressed in a connectionist fashion, attempting to clarify fundamental mechanisms in depth before addressing the more complex problems of pattern recognition and classification. This extensive and impressive research effort built a firm basis from which to speculate about these issues. What seemed lacking, however, was an overall characterization of the recognition problem – a broad theoretical structure to direct future research in this area. Consequently, our primary objective in this volume, originally published in 1981, was not only to review existing contributions to our understanding of classification and recognition, but to project fruitful areas and directions for future research as well. The book covers four areas: complex visual patterns; complex auditory patterns; multi-dimensional perceptual spaces; theoretical pattern recognition.

The stimuli were non-speech, non- musical, tone sequences that conveyed arhythmic or partly rhythmic time patterns. The results indicated that the temporal pattern discrimination process depends on the timing of the sequences and whether they overlap in time. Listeners can perform the task very well when the patterns do not overlap and are presented to separate ears and/or at different tone frequencies. At long time separations, the listener's discrimination mechanism reduces the input information to two lists of intertone times, and the decision is based on the correlation between the lists (a temporal correlation process). At short time separations, the mechanism computes statistics based on the summed envelope of the two input waveforms (a single channel process). The project's second component consisted of analytical and computer modeling of multi-element detection systems. New results were obtained on the performance of statistically optimal detector arrays and on arrays that combine their binary outputs. The project's third component studied how observers process information in multi- element, visual signal detection. The results describe how performance depends on display element reliability, coding and arrangement. Book excerpt: There has been a recent surge of interest in auditory hallucinations (AH) in schizophrenia compared to those experienced by non-clinical (i.e. healthy) individuals. This interest stems in no small part from a keen awareness of the fact that progress in developing more effective treatments for AH in psychosis has been seriously hampered by our limited understanding of the cognitive and biological mechanisms involved. The prevailing notion that AH in clinical and non-clinical populations share the same features and underlying mechanisms - the continuum hypothesis - has been seriously challenged by a growing list of differences, as well as similarities, between these groups. At the phenomenological level this is exemplified in the highly negative content of AH in patients and the markedly earlier age of onset of AH in non-patients. Similarly, several recent studies point to significant differences in cognition, language lateralization and, possibly, dopamine function between these groups. These findings have important implications for the design of future studies, and raise considerable doubt about the adequacy of modelling the functional mechanisms of clinical AH on the basis of non-clinical populations. In short, the time seems ripe to re-evaluate the continuum hypothesis and provide a forum to present alternative perspectives on the functional pathways leading to AH in clinical and non-clinical groups. Such a forum is also timely in view of the renewed interest in AH in other (non-schizophrenic) clinical groups, again examining similarities and differences between such groups. Preliminary studies, for instance, have shown that AH in certain clinical populations (e.g. bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, dissociative disorder) share similar phenomenological features with AH in schizophrenia. However, the implications of such findings are not fully understood, and studies have not adequately examined potential differences between AH in these groups. The goal of this Frontiers Research Topic, therefore, is take the opportunity to bring together research exploring differences and similarities in mechanisms of AH in clinical and non-clinical groups and to stimulate the development of new explanatory models which explicitly link the phenomenological characteristics of AH with underlying mechanisms.

The model was evaluated in tasks in which observers were required to discriminate between the spectral or temporal patterns encoded in two sequences of tones. The experimental results supported the assumptions of a trace/context coding theory. The trace mechanism is relatively insensitive to temporal transformations made to frequency-coded patterns but relatively sensitive to temporal transformations made to temporally coded patterns. The effects of intervening maskers on the trace were also evaluated.
