Book excerpt: The current study reviews previous research supporting the utility of a two-dimensional conceptualization of marital quality and its association with cognitive attributions. Extension of these results to two categories of attributions, distress-maintaining and relationship-enhancing attributions, was attempted. Attributions were measured using a self-report inventory and an observational coding system for a videotaped problem-solving interaction. Married couples from a college and community sample (N = 83) participated. The current study yielded partial support for the utility of two-dimensional marital quality as a predictor of the measures of attributions, particularly for coded attributions. Two-dimensional marital quality might be especially useful in accounting for motivation to improve the marriage as a factor operating on the association between quality and attributions. Discussion summarizes current results, discrepancies between current and previous research, limitations of the current study, and avenues for further research to clarify the conditions under which two-dimensional marital quality is most useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the premise that close relationships are subjected to extraordinary scrutiny in contemporary society, the authors go on to say that this generation values individual fulfilment more than any before us. We are able to leave existing relationships with relative ease, demand a high level of satisfaction from our intimate relationships, and are frustrated at those times when we fail to achieve it.; This volume presents a range Of Theoretical And Clinical Approaches To Understanding And Promoting relationship satisfaction. Integrating findings from social, clinical and counselling psychology, researchers illuminate what it means to be satisfied within a love relationship and identify the factors that allow couples to create successful relationships over time.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the role that marital attributions may play in the relationship between the occurrence of stressful life events and marital quality. Specifically, it is suggested that within a crisis theory framework, the meaning couples attribute to stressful events may either mediate or moderate the impact of stressors on the marital relationship. First, several models of stress adaptation in families and marriages are discussed. Next, current research on marital attributions is reviewed, and problems with this field of research are explored. Finally, the possible role of marital attributions in stress adaptation is examined. A total of 60 married couples completed measures on current life stressors, marital quality, and marital attributions. The mediational model failed to find support due to the lack of a strong relationship between life stressors and marital attributions. Partial support for the moderational model was found. These results can be interpreted as indicating that the marital quality of couples who make relationship-enhancing attributions about their spouses' negative behaviors is less negatively affected by stress than those who make distress-maintaining attributions. Findings concurrent with the literature on resilience suggest that the experience of life stressors may afford an opportunity for a couple's marriage to strengthen if adaptive marital attributions are used. Differences in the moderational role of marital attributions between men and women and stress adaptation literature suggest future avenues of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and evaluates the major contributions social, developmental, and clinical psychologists have made to a scientific understanding of marriage. The book's objective: to foster a deeper appreciation of the knowledge gained from basic and applied psychological research on the marital relationship as well as a better understanding of the issues, assumptions, and controversies that confront researchers and practitioners in the field. Systematically addressing theoretical, methodological, and applied issues in the study of marriage, this ambitious volume shows how this accumulated knowledge informs the practitioner's attempts to cope with practical problems. Among the fundamental issues examined in Part I are * the social psychology of marriage * research methods in the study of marital interdependence * observation of marital interaction * cognition in marriage * gender differences and sex-role identity * the impact of children on marriage * employment and marital functioning * marriage and psychopathology. Focusing on the translation of research into practical interventions, subsequent chapters discuss the prevention and treatment of marital dysfunction, spouse abuse, and sexual dysfunction. Also featured is a review of theoretical orientations in the treatment of marital discord. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MARRIAGE brings together the work of leading experts in marital research and therapy, each of whom provides a cogent overview of a particular area of clinical research while illuminating the problems frequently encountered in its practical implementation. This authoritative synthesis and update of contemporary psychological research on the marital relationship is a valuable resource for investigators seeking a comprehensive overview of marital research and practitioners wishing to strengthen their skills and learn about the empirical bases for their interventions. The work is suitable for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on close relationships, marriage, marital therapy, and the family.
