This book was released on 2020 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adults who lack a post-secondary degree or vocational certificate quite often will struggle to find a job that pays a livable wage, particularly in higher socioeconomic regions of the United States. Unfortunately, many nontraditional adult students who return to school end up not completing their degree or certification program. These students often face risk factors associated with low socio-economic status that impede their success. This study examined the risk and protective factors encountered by economically disadvantaged adult students. Fourteen academically resilient adult students participated in one-on-one, semi-structured interviews to share with the researcher risk and protective factors they encountered while in school. Conversations were recorded, transcribed and then coded utilizing the extensive previous research on resilience. To date, there is scant qualitative research focusing on the academic resilience of adult students who return to school and are successful. Therefore, the researcher believed it to be of the utmost importance to focus on this group of individuals. This study finds that work, financial stress, family obligations, and in some cases English language proficiency were the most prevalent risk factors faced by economically disadvantaged students. This study also found that personality traits, family support, and institutional supports were the most important protective factors that fostered academic resilience. Recommendations include providing economically disadvantaged students with a stipend to relieve financial stress while attending classes, professional development for instructors to drive more self-directed learning, increasing course scheduling flexibility, and mandating counseling for all adult students.
Book Synopsis Economically Disadvantaged Students by : Stephanie Kim Hawkins

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study examined academically successful economically disadvantaged (ED) students from one intact Caucasian family through parents', students', and teachers' perceptions of the reasons for resilience. The problem is that little research exists exploring qualities of academically successful ED Caucasian students. Because being a high school dropout significantly affects students, families, schools, and society, risk factors were explored; protective factors that help students overcome risk factors were also investigated. This study describes why academically successful ED students from one intact Caucasian family in Tennessee thrive despite risk factors working against them. Findings include the importance of Christian faith to the family in the case study and its positive effect on academic achievement. Suggestions for further research are also included.

Book Synopsis A Focus on Hope by : Erik E. Morales
Download or read book A Focus on Hope written by Erik E. Morales and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2011 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the course of ten years, this extensive qualitative study focused on the academic resilience phenomenon. The research delves into the educational resilience experiences of fifty low socioeconomic students of color from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. In addition to chronicling specific protective factors and processes active in the students' lives, several symbiotic relationships between groups of protective factors are documented and explored. A Resilience Cycle theory, which was chronicled in previous works of the authors, is used as a framework to view essential elements of the students' academic success. Ultimately, the data and findings are used to propose practical suggestions for promoting academic resilience in at-risk youth nationwide. Furthermore, because one author specializes in education and the other in psychology, both of these disciplines are brought to bear on this crucial and understudied topic." -- from back cover.

Download or read book Equity in Education written by Oecd and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times of growing economic inequality, improving equity in education becomes more urgent. While some countries and economies that participate in the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) have managed to build education systems where socio-economic status makes less of a difference to students' learning and well-being, every country can do more. Equity in Education: Breaking Down Barriers to Social Mobility shows that high performance and more positive attitudes towards schooling among disadvantaged 15-year-old students are strong predictors of success in higher education and work later on. The report examines how equity in education has evolved over several cycles of the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). It identifies the policies and practices that can help disadvantaged students succeed academically and feel more engaged at school. Using longitudinal data from five countries (Australia, Canada, Denmark, Switzerland, and the United States), the report also describes the links between a student's performance near the end of compulsory education and upward social mobility - i.e. attaining a higher level of education or working in a higher-status job than one's parents.

The purpose of this report has been to present policy relevant analyses of TIMSS and PISA in a way that is accessible for policy makers on different levels in the Nordic countries, with the aim to contribute to further development in the education area.
Book Synopsis Socioeconomic Inequality and Educational Outcomes by : Markus Broer
Download or read book Socioeconomic Inequality and Educational Outcomes written by Markus Broer and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open-access book focuses on trends in educational inequality using twenty years of grade 8 student data collected from 13 education systems by the IEAs Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) between 1995 and 2015. While the overall positive association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement is well documented in the literature, the magnitude of this relationship is contingent on social contexts and is expected to vary by education system. Research on how such associations differ across societies and how the strength of these relationships has changed over time is limited. This study, therefore, addresses an important research and policy question by examining changes in the inequality of educational outcomes due to SES over this 20-year period, and also examines the extent to which the performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds has improved over time in each education system. Education systems generally aim to narrow the achievement gap between low- and high-SES students and to improve the performance of disadvantaged students. However, the lack of quantifiable and comprehensible measures makes it difficult to assess and monitor the effect of such efforts. In this study, a novel measure of SES that is consistent across all TIMSS cycles allows students to be categorized into different socioeconomic groups. This measure of SES may also contribute to future research using TIMSS trend data. Readers will gain new insight into how educational inequality has changed in the education systems studied and how such change may relate to the more complex picture of macroeconomic changes in those societies.

Book Synopsis Educational Resilience in inner-city America by : Margaret C Wang
Download or read book Educational Resilience in inner-city America written by Margaret C Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of life in inner-city America and the education of its people is often recounted as a tragedy; the ending is often predictable and usually dire, highlighting deficiency, failure, and negative trends. As with most social problems, children and youth in the inner cities are hit hardest. But this dismal view is only half of the full picture. The cities of our nation are a startling juxtaposition between the despairing and the hopeful, between disorganization and restorative potential. Alongside the poverty and unemployment, the street-fights and drug deals, are a wealth of cultural, economic, educational, and social resources. Often ignored are the resilience and the ability for adaptation which help many who are seemingly confined by circumstance to struggle and succeed "in the face of the odds." This book helps to broaden the utilization of ways to magnify the circumstances known to enhance development and education, so that the burden of adversity is reduced and opportunities are advanced for all children and youth -- especially the children and youth of the inner cities who are in at-risk circumstances. The focus is on: * raising consciousness about the opportunities available to foster resilience among children, families, and communities, and * synthesizing the knowledge base that is central to implementing improvements which serve to better the circumstances and educational opportunities of children and families. This volume is intended for a wide audience of readers, but particularly those who are in a position to shape public policy and deliver educational and human services.
Book Synopsis Individual, Family, and School Characteristics Associated with Academic Success Among Low-Income Students by : Linda K. Mayger
Download or read book Individual, Family, and School Characteristics Associated with Academic Success Among Low-Income Students written by Linda K. Mayger and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the disproportionately small numbers of low-income students who obtain postsecondary degrees, the current study investigated the relationships between various characteristics of disadvantaged students and the level of K--12 academic success that positioned them for postsecondary degree completion. After examining the literature related to academic resilience, the author found inconsistent identification of low-income students and low-level benchmarks for academic success. The lack of consistency in identifying low-income and academically successful students undermined the generalizability of the findings to students prepared for postsecondary education.
Book Synopsis Promoting Academic Resilience in Multicultural America by : Erik E. Morales
Download or read book Promoting Academic Resilience in Multicultural America written by Erik E. Morales and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promoting Academic Resilience in Multicultural America combines biographical sketches of resilient students, examples of effective programs designed to encourage resilience, recent research in the field, and their own experiences of resilient academics of color. The book illustrates exactly how academic success occurs within traditionally challenged learning environments. The authors focus most closely on the crucial transition between high school and college. The individuals spotlighted and programs outlined cross racial, gender, socioeconomic, and ethnic lines, and include African American, Hispanic, and white students. In part, the authors conclude that there are specific multidimensional protective factors that work collaboratively to enable the success of these exceptional students. It is the detailed exploration of these phenomena that lie at the heart of this work and that has the potential to help all children excel. Among other uses, this book could be a valuable addition to a college freshmen seminar series, a foundations of education course, a course on multiculturalism in America and/or any course focused on basic educational psychology.
Book Synopsis Perceptions of Academic Resilience Among Teachers and Twelfth Grade Adolescent Girls by : Alise O'Brien
Download or read book Perceptions of Academic Resilience Among Teachers and Twelfth Grade Adolescent Girls written by Alise O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative research study explored perceptions of academic resilience among teachers and twelfth grade adolescent girls. Specifically, how students and teachers believe teachers promote academic resilience in students, the characteristics of academically resilient students according to students and teachers, and the characteristics of academically non-resilient students according to teachers. The relationship between the general comments made during student focus group sessions and the students' responses on the Locus of Control (LOC) survey were analyzed. Qualitative data were collected including teacher interviews, student focus groups, Implicit Theories of Intelligence Scales for teachers and students as well as the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Survey for students. Findings indicated that teachers and students both reported teachers who were flexible and provided extra help sessions for students promoted academic resilience. It also was reported by teachers and students that developing personal relationships with vi!i students helped to promote academic resilience. Teachers and students reported similar characteristics of academically resilient students. Characteristic behaviors of academic resilient students were identified as having ambition or being motivated to be successful. Having a positive attitude and having the ability to be reflective also were identified as characteristic of academic resilience. Finally, teachers and students agreed that having a strong internal locus of control is characteristic of academic resilience.

Book excerpt: ANDY HARGREAVES Department of Teacher Education, Curriculum and Instruction Lynch School of Education, Boston College, MA, U.S.A. ANN LIEBERMAN Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Stanford, CA, U.S.A. MICHAEL FULLAN Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada DAVID HOPKINS Department for Education and Skills, London, U.K. This set of four volumes on Educational Change brings together evidence and insights on educational change issues from leading writers and researchers in the field from across the world. Many of these writers, whose chapters have been specially written for these books, have been investigating, helping initiate and implementing educational change, for most or all of their lengthy careers. Others are working on the cutting edge of theory and practice in educational change, taking the field in new or even more challenging directions. And some are more skeptical about the literature of educational change and the assumptions on which it rests. They help us to approach projects of understanding or initiating educational change more deeply, reflectively and realistically. Educational change and reform have rarely had so much prominence within public policy, in so many different places. Educational change is ubiquitous. It figures large in Presidential and Prime Ministerial speeches. It is at or near the top of many National policy agendas. Everywhere, educational change is not only a policy priority but also major public news. Yet action to bring about educational change usually exceeds people's understanding of how to do so effectively.
Book Synopsis The Resilient Learner by : Thomas Rojo Aubrey, Jr.
Download or read book The Resilient Learner written by Thomas Rojo Aubrey, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resilient Learner: Thriving and Succeeding in College is a groundbreaking book that defines a new framework to help students improve psychological and emotional resilience, enhance learning and academic performance, and improve quality of life to increase the likelihood of success in all areas of academic, emotional, and social life. This book is about coaching students in academic resiliency, which is the capacity to overcome, adapt, and learn from setbacks, failures, and adversity. It prepares students psychologically and emotionally for the demands they will face in school and in their personal lives (including mental and emotional problems) to succeed academically. Dr. Aubrey postulates six areas of academic resiliency to help students develop a fortitude for success. Students will develop positive habits of mind such as flexible thinking, optimism, growth mindset, and grit (perseverance and passion). These skills include the ability to self-regulate the body's defense systems, intense emotions, thoughts, and self-defeating behaviors that throw students off course and derail their success. Students will also learn the skilled ability to control impulses through the practice of mindfulness to enhance academic performance. They will learn to use the skills of causal analysis and critical thinking to identify the true cause of problems and avoid repeating the same mistakes.Academic resiliency improves the quality of learning by supporting an enhanced culture of wellness and by fostering skills needed to shift into a physiological state of safety, support, and connection to promote optimal learning in the classroom. This proactive educational training approach in resiliency can contribute to increased persistence, perseverance, and completion rates. Thus, you're invited on a journey to a future where you will thrive and flourish as a student. Get ready to take your life from one of stress to one of greater success.
