Download or read book Race, Rights, and the Asian American Experience written by Angelo N. Ancheta and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Race, Rights, and the Asian American Experience, Angelo N. Ancheta demonstrates how United States civil rights laws have been framed by a black-white model of race that typically ignores the experiences of other groups, including Asian Americans. When racial discourse is limited to antagonisms between black and white, Asian Americans often find themselves in a racial limbo, marginalized or unrecognized as full participants. A skillful mixture of legal theories, court cases, historical events, and personal insights, this revised edition brings fresh insights to U.S. civil rights from an Asian American perspective.

Book Synopsis From the Land of Hibiscus by : Yong-ho Ch'oe
Download or read book From the Land of Hibiscus written by Yong-ho Ch'oe and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1903, 102 Koreans migrated to Hawai‘i in search of wealth and fortune—the first in their country’s history to live in the Western world. Thousands followed. Most of them, however, found only hardship while working as sugar plantation laborers. Soon after their departure, Korea was colonized by Japan, and overnight they became "international orphans" with no government to protect them. Setting aside their original goal of bettering their own lives, these Korean immigrants redirected their energies to restoring their country’s sovereignty, turning Hawai‘i into a crucially important base of Korean nationalism. From the Land of Hibiscus traces the story of Koreans in Hawai‘i from their first arrival to the eve of Korea’s liberation in 1945. Using newly uncovered evidence, it challenges previously held ideas on the social origins of immigrants. It also examines their political background, the role of Christian churches in immigration, the image of Koreans as depicted in the media, and, above all, nationalist activities. Different approaches to waging the nationalist struggle uncover the causes of feuds that often bitterly divided the Korean community. Finally, the book provides the first in-depth studies of the nationalist activities of Syngman Rhee, the Korean National Association, and the United Korea Committee. Contributors: Yŏng-ho Ch’oe, Anne Soon Choi, Sun-Pyo Hong, Do-Hyung Kim, Lili M. Kim, Richard S. Kim, Brandon Palmer, Judy Van Zile, Mahn-Yŏl Yi.

Book Synopsis Los Angeles--Struggles toward Multiethnic Community by : Edward T. Chang
Download or read book Los Angeles--Struggles toward Multiethnic Community written by Edward T. Chang and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myths and theories of the American melting pot, of assimilation, and of pluralistic society were shattered as racial violence during the 1992 Los Angeles uprising vividly exposed the inadequacy of our prior assumptions. The uprising revealed that radical approaches are needed to address structural issues of economic and political inequality, and issues of race and representation. Los Angeles has emerged as a focal point for social scientists as they develop new ideas about race relations. This volume, based on a special issue of Amerasia Journal, focuses o race and ethnic relations in Los Angeles as they emerged out of the uprising and within the broader national picture. Latino and Asian and African American scholars, journalists, and writers have contributed two dozen essays, commentaries, and literary works. Among the scholarly essays are “Jewish and Korean Merchants in African American Neighborhoods” by Edward Chang, “Communication between African Americans and Korean Americans before and after the Los Angeles Riots” by Ella Stewart, “Asian Americans and Latinos in San Gabriel Valley, California” by Leland T. Saito, “The South Central Los Angeles Eruption: A Latino Perspective” by Armando Navarro, and “Race, Class, Conflict and Empowerment: On Ice Cube’s ‘Black Korea’” by Jeff Chang. Commentaries by Asian and African American writers feature Larry Aubry, Angela E. Oh, Sharon Park, Amy Uyematsu, Erich Nakano, Walter Lew, and Miriam Ching Louie. A selection of literary writings features Mari Sunaida, Ko Won, Wanda Coleman, Mellonee R. Houston, Sae Lee, Nat Jones, Arjuna, Chungmi Kim, and Lynn Manning.
Book Synopsis Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans by : Deborah Woo
Download or read book Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans written by Deborah Woo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of the United States, fluctuations in cultural diversity, immigration, and ethnic group status have been closely linked to shifts in the economy and labor market. Over three decades after the beginning of the civil rights movement, and in the midst of significant socioeconomic change at the end of this century, scholars search for new ways to describe the persistent roadblocks to upward mobility that women and people of color still encounter in the workforce. In Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans, Deborah Woo analyzes current scholarship and controversies on the glass ceiling and labor market discrimination in conjunction with the specific labor histories of Asian American ethnic groups. She then presents unique, in-depth studies of two current sites-a high tech firm and higher education-to argue that a glass ceiling does in fact exist for Asian Americans, both according to quantifiable data and to Asian American workers' own perceptions of their workplace experiences. Woo's studies make an important contribution to understanding the increasingly complex and subtle interactions between ethnicity and organizational cultures in today's economic institutions and labor markets.

Book excerpt: Using case examples, statistics, and historical and contemporary perspectives, this manual presents general principles and practical approaches for the culturally sensitive provision of victim services by the criminal justice system with emphasis on blacks, Asian Americans, Hispano Americans, and American Indians. The text is intended for criminal justice personnel, policymakers, victim advocates, and rape crisis and family violence counselors. It emphasizes the need for the criminal justice system to effectively serve crime victims within the increasingly racial pluralism and ethnic diversity in American society. Through its overview of current problems and major issues, the personal accounts of crime victims, and descriptions of innovative programs, it explains the psychological impacts of victimization in different minority groups and the premises and essential components of culturally sensitive victim treatment.
