Book Synopsis The Jews in Fascist Italy: A History by : Renzo De Felice
Download or read book The Jews in Fascist Italy: A History written by Renzo De Felice and published by Enigma Books. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My aim was to explain in detail the facts surrounding Fascist anti-Semitism and the persecution of the Jews in Mussolini's Italy. Too many people in Italy and elsewhere underestimate or deny the tragic fate of European Jewry and anti-Semitism between the two world wars. A few short years ago anti-Semitism appeared defeated and reduced to a tiny group of fanatics. But now it seems to be regaining ground in its more political incarnation, probably the most dangerous one, because next to the religious, social and economic varieties it is the most insidious of all. The author occupies a central position among Italian historians specialized in modern Italy's political history. He broke new ground by first publishing this book in 1961 having obtained special permission to consult the files in the Archives of the Italian Jewish Communities concerning the Fascist regime's persecution of the Jews in Italy from 1938 to 1945. The book's release coincided with the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem that brought the Holocaust to the attention of other historians and to the world public. The English translation of the final 1993 edition was supported by a grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This paperback and electronic book edition is published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Book Synopsis From Rail to Road and Back Again? by : Colin Divall
Download or read book From Rail to Road and Back Again? written by Colin Divall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coming of the railways signalled the transformation of European society, allowing the quick and cheap mass transportation of people and goods on a previously unimaginable scale. By the early decades of the twentieth century, however, the domination of rail transport was threatened by increased motorised road transport which would quickly surpass and eclipse the trains, only itself to be challenged in the twenty-first century by a renewal of interest in railways. Yet, as the studies in this volume make clear, to view the relationship between road and rail as a simple competition between two rival forms of transportation, is a mistake. Rail transport did not vanish in the twentieth century any more than road transport vanished in the nineteenth with the appearance of the railways. Instead a mutual interdependence has always existed, balancing the strengths and weaknesses of each system. It is that interdependence that forms the major theme of this collection. Divided into two main sections, the first part of the book offers a series of chapters examining how railway companies reacted to increasing competition from road transport, and exploring the degree to which railways depended on road transportation at different times and places. Part two focuses on road mobility, interpreting it as the innovative success story of the twentieth century. Taken together, these essays provide a fascinating reappraisal of the complex and shifting nature of European transportation over the last one hundred years.

Download or read book Traces of Tollius written by Simon Groot and published by Uitgeverij Verloren. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joannes Tollius (c. 1550-c. 1620) was born in Amersfoort and began his career as music director of the Amersfoort Chapel of Our Lady. He flourished in Italy as maestro di capella of the cathedrals of Rieti (1583-84) and Assisi (1584-86), and as cantor tenorista in Rome (1586-88) and Padua (1588-1601). He ended his career as an exceptionally well-paid singer in the court chapel of Christian IV in Copenhagen (1601-03). In 1590, a collection of three-part motets appeared under the surprising title Motecta de dignitate et moribus sacerdotum (motets about the dignity and morals of priests), presumably intended as a denunciation of the priests who had had him imprisoned in Assisi on charge of heresy, a charge of which Tollius was later acquitted. In 1591, two collections of five-part motets appeared in quick succession. In these motets, Tollius uses techniques of word painting that go significantly further than those used by his contemporaries in sacred music. In 1597, an extended and revised reprint appeared of the a collection of six-part madrigals. In his madrigals, Tollius shows himself to be a skilled composer who is in keeping with the madrigal output of his Italian contemporaries. In 1598, two new madrigals by Tollius appeared in collections of works by Paduan masters, including such great names as Lodovico Viadana and Costanzo Porta. Tollius is unconventional in his compositions. He combines works with an archaic character, with works that fit in prevailing compositional trends, but he also experiments with means that go far beyond what his contemporaries allowed themselves. His oeuvre may be small, but its diversity and quality makes it notable. During his life, Tollius regularly came into conflict with his employers. He was often fined and sometimes even imprisoned. Contemporary accounts of Tollius are contradictory when it comes to his personality, but they are unanimous in recognising that he was a skilled musician.

The Once-Only Principle (OOP) is part of the seven underlying principles of the eGovernment Action Plan 2016-2020. It aims to make the government more effective and to reduce administrative burdens by asking citizens and companies to provide certain standard information to the public authorities only once. The project was horizontal and policy-driven with the aim of showing that the implementation of OOP in a cross-border and cross-sector setting is feasible. The book summarizes the results of the project from policy, organizational, architectural, and technical points of view.

Book Synopsis Procedural Autonomy of EU Member States: Paradise Lost? by : Diana-Urania Galetta
Download or read book Procedural Autonomy of EU Member States: Paradise Lost? written by Diana-Urania Galetta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the procedural autonomy of EU Member State a myth or a reality? What should this concept be taken to mean? Starting from the analysis of requirements and principles regulating, generally speaking, the relationships between Member States’ and EU law, this book provides a definition of procedural autonomy able to account for the concept’s inherent limits. Out of an analysis of the more relevant EU jurisprudence, the author identifies the rationale underlying the interventions of the ECJ on issues of procedural autonomy and the common logic that emerges from it; and reveals how, in an unchanged context of ‘procedural autonomy’ of the Member States, national procedural law becomes more and more ‘functionalized’ to the requirements of effectiveness of substantive EU law. As such, we should speak of a ‘functionalized procedural competence’ rather than of procedural autonomy. But this is by no means a case of “Paradise Lost.” The book includes a foreword by Prof. Jürgen Schwarze, one of the founding fathers of European Administrative Law.
Book Synopsis EU Soft Law in the Member States by : Mariolina Eliantonio
Download or read book EU Soft Law in the Member States written by Mariolina Eliantonio and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyses, for the first time in European studies, the impact that non-legally binding material (otherwise known as soft law) has on national courts and administration. The study is founded on empirical work undertaken by the European Network of Soft Law Research (SoLaR), across ten EU Member States, in competition policy, financial regulation, environmental protection and social policy. The book demonstrates that soft law is taken into consideration at the national level and it clarifies the extent to which soft law can have legal and practical effects for individuals and national authorities. The national case studies highlight the points of convergence or divergence in the way in which judges and administrators approach soft law, while reflecting on the reasons for and consequences of various national practices. A series of horizontal studies connect this research to the rich literature on new modes of governance, by revisiting traditional theories on soft law, and by reflecting on the potential of such instruments to undermine or to foster rule of law values.

Book Synopsis Global Administrative Law and EU Administrative Law by : Edoardo Chiti
Download or read book Global Administrative Law and EU Administrative Law written by Edoardo Chiti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-03 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to enrich and refine global administrative law and EU administrative law analytical tools by examining their manifold relations. Its aim is to begin to explore the complex reality of the interactions between EU administrative law and global administrative law, to provide a preliminary map of such legal and institutional reality, and to review it. The book is the first attempt to analyze a dense area of new legal issues. The first part of the book contains core elements of a general theory of the relationships between global and EU administrative law: comparative inquiries, exchanges of legal principles, and developing linkages. The second part is devoted to special regulatory regimes, in which global and European law coexist, though not always peacefully. Several sectors are considered: cultural heritage, medicines, climate change, antitrust, accounting and auditing, banking supervision, and public procurement.
