Un bel gruppo di spie (monsignori, cardinali e persino guardie svizzere) che s'infiltrano nelle stanze del papa, due giudici bulgari che giudici non sono e anzi sono ritenuti i due organizzatori del sequestro nel 1983 di Emanuela Orlandi, strumento inconsapevole del terrorismo internazionale. E non è finita: un morto che in realtà non è morto (il presunto organizzatore dell'attentato al papa), due italiani trattati come spie dal governo bulgaro per ritorsione nei confronti del nostro ma che spie non sono, un sindacalista incarcerato e poi scagionato vent'anni dopo, senza nemmeno ricevere le scuse. Omicidi, sequestri, furti, ricatti, minacce (anche ai giudici); spie, terroristi, servizi segreti al gran completo, criminalità organizzata: come in una vera spy story entrano ed escono personaggi di ogni tipo (anche un monaco benedettino con Maserati Biturbo color giallo oro, spia della Stasi), e non mancano le sorprese. I due autori, un noto giornalista e un noto magistrato che ha seguito un filone dell'inchiesta sull'attentato ed è avvocato della famiglia Orlandi, hanno lavorato su documenti e testimonianze, contro silenzi e omertà. Il loro libro entra nel cuore del Novecento, tra equilibri politici mondiali e storie personali. A distanza di trent'anni da quel giorno (13 maggio 1981), la verità deve ancora essere chiarita del tutto, anche perché il giallo non finisce mai: ancora nel 1998 l'omicidio del comandante delle guardie svizzere (con sua moglie e il vicecaporale) e il furto dei documenti che aveva con sé mandano un messaggio molto chiaro: guai a chi vuole parlare, alle spie non si fanno sconti. Mai. E questo è un monito che vale per tutti, anche per il papa.

Le pape et la papauté représentent à leur tour deux "incarnations" de l'autorité : l'une institutionnelle (le gouvernement ecclésiastique), l'autre individuelle (le souverain pontife comme successeur de Pierre investi d'une mission de divine inspiration et exerçant à ce titre une autorité suprême). Chacune d'elles montre par ailleurs, en creux ou explicitement, selon les cas, l'idéal d'une Église, d'une papauté et de papes, que leurs partisans comme leurs opposants eussent voulus au-dessus des intérêts matériels et des stratégies de pouvoir, tous se présentant en mal d'une autorité morale incontestable et littéralement incomparable (celle des "Princes" telle qu'elle ressort de ces travaux n'échappant pas non plus à une sévère critique). Dans le balayage temporel et thématique qu'elles effectuent, ces études, du même coup, rendent compte du paradoxe proprement italien d'une tension ancestrale et originale entre la religion de la politique et la politique de la religion.
