Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 70 years after independence, the tragic reality of Indian schools is that who we are, where we live, how much we earn and our gender influences the kind of education we will get. In this collection of essays the author explores the contours of a school system that is facing a crisis of legitimacy. While India aspires to march towards a knowledge driven society and economy, millions of young people are left behind. Those who can afford march out of government schools only to realize that the private schools are no better. The schools they attend leaves them with little knowledge or skill, a very low self-esteem and a bleak future. This book argues that the struggle for equality in education, is ultimately a struggle for quality – both being two sides of the same coin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book calls for an equitable and qualitative access to education for all. It proposes paradigms of educational governance that are based on coalition building between key stakeholders, are grounded in local and cultural contexts, sensitive to the language needs of communities. It underlines the significance of gender sensitive and inclusive approaches that ensure equity for marginalized children and minorities. Based on research-based studies, the volume focuses on equity, quality, and learning — covering a broad spectrum, from school to higher, to adult education. It discusses the multiple learner deprivations amongst the marginalized communities and the severe impact of events such as pandemics that exacerbate learner inequities and the recent developments in India under the National Education Policy 2020. It also presents research-based country experiences in the Asian (India, Bangladesh, China) and African (Ghana, South Africa) contexts, showing how external influences on the changing priorities in policy perspectives cut across developing countries. Compiled in honour of Professor R. Govinda, this volume of insightful articles will be of interest to students and researchers of educational policy and studies, sociology of education, equity and human rights. It will also be useful for decision makers and think tanks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book quantitatively analyses data to demonstrate India's recent progress in the education sector. India, as one of the world's fastest growing economies, currently enjoys what is termed a 'demographic dividend' meaning that, compared to most other countries, it has a relatively young working age population. In order to exploit this advantage, the author argues that India needs to make this young population economically productive through education. The chapters in the book address whether India has succeeded in doing so, both in terms of numbers educated and the quality of their education. The author draws on specialist surveys conducted by India's National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in 2008 and 2014 which examine the state of education in India.

While higher education is an extremely dynamic segment in India’s education sector, yet a host of issues related to a lack of a good and comprehensive monitoring system have prevented the regular publishing of data on this sector. Data does exist, but it tends to be infrequently published, dated, not comparable and many times of poor quality. The authors present here the most appropriate data that is credible, from government or associated data sources. This compendium of data simplifies for the reader, the gamut of issues that must be kept in mind, before interpreting the data on higher education. This book will be of immense use and interest to educationists, policy-makers and student of varied disciplines including economics and demographics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gendering the Massification Generation examines why young people from the same families and communities in India experience different decision-making processes regarding higher education access because of their gender. In India and other contexts where higher education is massifying, and gender parity of enrolment has been reached at undergraduate level, there are still many questions to be asked about gender and access to higher education. Based on an exploratory study of gendered higher education access and choice within the state of Haryana, India, the authors explore gender inequalities of higher education access and choice in the Indian context and connect this with the broader international phenomenon of widening participation. Through an in-depth analysis of the ‘massification generation’, where young people from relatively disadvantaged backgrounds are accessing higher education, often for the first time in their families and communities, readers are encouraged to apply a lens of social disadvantage and gender, and to recognise the norms and transgressions of femininity and masculinity in relation to higher education access and choice. With global implications for the ways in which gender is analysed and framed in widening participation research and policy, this is the ideal book for scholars, students and policy makers working on higher education, as well as researchers and NGOs specialising in gender, school-to-higher education transitions, international development, sociology and area studies.

In the early nineteenth century, an imperial civil society movement promoted modern elementary 'schools for all'. This movement included British, American and German missionaries, and Indian intellectuals and social reformers. They organised themselves in non-governmental organisations, which aimed to change Indian education. Firstly, they introduced a new culture of schooling, centred on memorisation, examination, and technocratic management. Secondly, they laid the ground for the building of the colonial system of education, which substituted indigenous education. Thirdly, they broadened the social accessibility of schooling. However, for the nineteenth century reformers, education for all did not mean equal education for all: elementary schooling became a means to teach different subalterns 'their place' in colonial society. Finally, the educational movement also furthered the building of a secular 'national education' in England.
