If it proves truly helpful and is accepted he will be jus tified in taking pleasure in that helpfulness and ac ceptation. Should his views be proved wrong he will be the first to welcome better and sounder views. In either event knowledge will have been advanced by his effort. For I feel sure that the book will stimulate thought. To that end it is sent forth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atoms Two kinds of intellectual activity, both equally instino tive, have played a prominent part in the progress of physical science. One is already developed in a child that, while holding an object, knows what will happen if he relinquishes his grasp. He may possibly never have had hold of the particular object before, but he nevertheless recognises something in common between the muscular sensations it calls forth and those which he has already experienced when grasping other objects that fell to the ground when his grasp was relaxed. Men like Galileo and Carnot, who possessed this power of perceiving analogies to an extra ordinary degree, have by an analogous process built up the doctrine of energy by successive generalisations, cautious as well as bold, from experimental relationships and objective realities. In the first place they observed, or it would perhaps be better to say that everyone has observed, that not only does an object fall if it be dropped, but that once it has reached the ground it will not rise of itself. We have to pay before a lift can be made to ascend, and the more dearly the swifter and higher it rises. Of course, the real price is not a sum of money, but the external compensation given for the work done by the lift (the fall of a mass of water, the combustion of coal, chemical change in a battery): The money is only the symbol of this compensation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from There's Adventure in Atomic Energy Randy Morrow, the central character in There's Adventure in Atomic Energy, is an average American boy in his early teens. His father is a writer of science books, and step by step he introduces Randy to the mysteries and wonders of the world of the atom. Perhaps the greatest of the new sciences is the development and control of atomic energy. As Randy finds out, here is the fuel to power the industries of the world by the time he has become a man. Here, too, may be the power that will some day take man to the stars. Randy learns some of the atom's supreme powers by simple experiments which any reader of this book can perform, too. The reason for the aforementioned is that in using the variational principle first order errors in the trial function produce only second order errors in the energy. To obtain a realistic wave function spatial correlation effects must be considered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thomson and his pupils, especially H. R. C. Wilson, Rutherford, Soddy, Perrin, and others, the ancient doctrine of the discrete nature of matter and the hypotheses of the existence of atoms and molecules have received new confirmation. Johnstone Stoney's "atom of electricity," the electron, has been shown to be separable from matter, and to be capable, under certain circumstances, of independent existence. It has also been made evident that the electron must be regarded as a kind of "element," with much stronger claims to "elementary," that is undecomposable, characters than the bodies hitherto ranked as "elements." It is with the object of presenting a consistent sketch of the progress of theory in this field that this book has been written. Besides this, in the part devoted to carbon, the greatly increased number of facts has been taken into account, and finally the amount of the rota tion of active bodies has received special attention. Accordingly the book may serve as a reference book for stereochemistry and optical activity. At the publishers' Wish, I have studied brevity as far as compatible With thorough treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Consistent Fields in Atoms: Hartree and Thomas-Fermi atoms centers on atomic properties- energy levels, binding energies, how atoms scatter X-rays, what magnetic properties they have, and so on. This book is organized into two parts. Part I contains topics including central field wave functions and angular momentum operators; concept of self-consistent field; Thomas-Fermi atom; energies of atoms and ions; X-ray scattering and electron densities in atoms; and relativistic effects in heavy atoms. Part II discusses the wave mechanics of an atom with a non-Coulomb central field; the calculation of atomic fields; a statistical method for the determination of some atomic properties and the application of this method to the theory of the periodic system of elements; and a simplification of the Hartree-Fock method.
