Book Synopsis Atomic Scale Characterization and First-Principles Studies of Si3N4 Interfaces by : Weronika Walkosz
Download or read book Atomic Scale Characterization and First-Principles Studies of Si3N4 Interfaces written by Weronika Walkosz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents results from a combined atomic-resolution Z-contrast and annular bright-field imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy in the Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy, as well as first principles studies of the interfaces between crystalline β−Si3N4 and amorphous (i) CeO2-x as well as (ii) SiO2 intergranular film (IGF). These interfaces are of a great fundamental and technological interest because they play an important role in the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Si3N4 ceramics used in many high temperature and pressure applications. The main contribution of this work is its detailed description of the bonding characteristics of light atoms, in particular oxygen and nitrogen, at these interfaces, which has not been achieved before. The atomic-scale information on the arrangement of both light and heavy atoms is critical for realistic modeling of interface properties, such as interface strength and ion transport, and will facilitate increased control over the performance of ceramic and semiconductor materials for a wide-range of applications.
Book Synopsis Ceramics Science and Technology, Volume 1 by : Ralf Riedel
Download or read book Ceramics Science and Technology, Volume 1 written by Ralf Riedel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although ceramics have been known to mankind literally for millennia, research has never ceased. Apart from the classic uses as a bulk material in pottery, construction, and decoration, the latter half of the twentieth century saw an explosive growth of application fields, such as electrical and thermal insulators, wear-resistant bearings, surface coatings, lightweight armour, or aerospace materials. In addition to plain, hard solids, modern ceramics come in many new guises such as fabrics, ultrathin films, microstructures and hybrid composites. Built on the solid foundations laid down by the 20-volume series Materials Science and Technology, Ceramics Science and Technology picks out this exciting material class and illuminates it from all sides. Materials scientists, engineers, chemists, biochemists, physicists and medical researchers alike will find this work a treasure trove for a wide range of ceramics knowledge from theory and fundamentals to practical approaches and problem solutions.

This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting cutting-edge research and development within multiscale modeling techniques and frameworks, Multiscale Analysis of Deformation and Failure of Materials systematically describes the background, principles and methods within this exciting new & interdisciplinary field. The author’s approach emphasizes the principles and methods of atomistic simulation and its transition to the nano and sub-micron scale of a continuum, which is technically important for nanotechnology and biotechnology. He also pays close attention to multiscale analysis across the micro/meso/macroscopy of a continuum, which has a broad scope of applications encompassing different disciplines and practices, and is an essential extension of mesomechanics. Of equal interest to engineers, scientists, academics and students, Multiscale Analysis of Deformation and Failure of Materials is a multidisciplinary text relevant to those working in the areas of materials science, solid and computational mechanics, bioengineering and biomaterials, and aerospace, automotive, civil, and environmental engineering. Provides a deep understanding of multiscale analysis and its implementation Shows in detail how multiscale models can be developed from practical problems and how to use the multiscale methods and software to carry out simulations Discusses two interlinked categories of multiscale analysis; analysis spanning from the atomistic to the micro-continuum scales, and analysis across the micro/meso/macro scale of continuum.

Book Synopsis Ceramic Microstructures by : Antoni P. Tomsia
Download or read book Ceramic Microstructures written by Antoni P. Tomsia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, titled Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ce ramic Microstructures: Control at the Atomic Level summarizes the progress that has been achieved during the past decade in understanding and controlling microstructures in ceram ics. A particular emphasis of the symposium, and therefore of this volume, is advances in the characterization, understanding, and control of micro structures at the atomic or near-atomic level. This symposium is the fourth in a series of meetings, held every ten years, devoted to ceramic microstructures. The inaugural meeting took place in 1966, and focussed on the analysis, significance, and production of microstructure; the symposium emphasized the need for, and importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of ceramics. A consensus emerged at that meeting on the critical importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of ceramic properties. That point of view became widely accepted in the ensuing decade. The second meeting took place in 1976 at a time of world-wide energy shortages and thus emphasized energy-related applications of ceramics, and more specifically, microstructure-property relationships of those materials. The third meeting, held in 1986, was devoted to the role that interfaces played both during processing, and in influencing the ultimate properties of single and polyphase ceramics, and ceramic-metal systems.

Download or read book Crystalline Oxide: Volume 747 written by D. G. Schlom and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-23 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of two symposia held at the 2002 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. Papers from Symposium T, Crystalline Oxides on Semiconductors, bring together experts from different technology areas - high-k gate dielectrics, novel memories, and ferroelectrics, for example - to examine commonality among the fields. These papers offer an overview of the field, highlight interesting experimental results and device ideas, and feature innovative theoretical approaches to understanding these systems. Symposium V, Interfacial Issues for Oxide-Based Electronics, covers a wide range of topics involving the interfaces between electro-optical oxide layers and other materials. Overall, it is clear that a new generation of materials and heterostructures has been enabled by the increasing control of interfacial phenomena. Topics include: epitaxial oxide-silicon heterostructures; ferroelectric thin films on silicon; theory and modeling; crystalline oxides for gate dielectrics; transparent conducting oxides; transparent conducting oxides and oxide growth and properties; field effect devices and gate dielectrics; ferroelectrics, capacitors and sensors; organic devices and interfacial growth issues.
