Book excerpt: A method to recover atmospheric temperature profiles using a ground- based Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer was investigated. The method used a difference form of the radiative transfer equation, a Bomem MR series Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer to collect atmospheric radiance values, and the Phillips Laboratory Expert- assisted User Software (PLEXUS) atmospheric radiance model, to recover an atmospheric temperature profile. The method researched uses radiance values from both the spectrometer measurements and the atmospheric model, along with kernel functions calculated by the atmospheric model as input to a difference form of the radiation transfer equation. From this the change in brightness temperatures was determined. The method assumes that the actual brightness temperature profile is a summation of a standard or reference brightness temperature profile plus some change in the brightness temperature. The brightness temperature profile used by the atmospheric model is the reference brightness temperature profile. Planck's Law was employed to transform the calculated brightness temperature function into a temperature function. A temperature profile was retrieved, although significant differences existed between the recovered temperature profile and a radiosonde recovered temperature profile.

Book excerpt: A side-looking infrared radiometer operating in a narrow spectral interval in the 15 micrometers carbon dioxide band was flown on a balloon platform. Data were obtained over the altitude range from 9.4 to 30 km. The resulting radiance measurements are compared with calculations making use of independent rawinsonde measurements obtained during the balloon flight. These comparisons indicate a systematic discrepancy of a few percent at lower altitudes increasing to 20 percent near 20 km. This discrepancy is found to be consistent with a previous study of satellite based radiances. Possible sources of this discrepancy are investigated and rejected, leading the authors to question the assumption that the source function is equal to the Planck intensity.

Book excerpt: This paper first presents a general description of an atmospheric remote sensing method using ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry in spectral measurement & inversion. The method is proposed & analyzed as a possible substitute to radiosondes in the context of three specific applications. First, the method is evaluated for predicting slant path transmittances based on retrieved profiles of temperature & water vapour. The potential of this approach is verified through calculations performed to compare transmittances generated with radiosonde profiles and retrieved profiles. Second, the remote detection of pollutants by FTIR emission spectroscopy usually requires that the background atmospheric contribution be subtracted from measurement, leading to a background-free signature from which mixing ratios can be estimated. An analysis is performed to evaluate the accuracy of computing spectral residuals based on retrieved profiles rather than radiosonde profiles. Finally, ground-based observations of cloud emissions in the infrared leads to investigation of a simple method for estimating the transmittance & apparent temperature of clouds. The method takes advantage of the cloud extinction effects on the ozone emission near 9.6 microns.

Book excerpt: This report describes the work accomplished on the retrieval of stratospheric temperature and density profiles from remote earth limb-view infrared radiation measurements. Temperature or density can be retrieved in a routine manner. A model based on two rotational lines of C02 was developed to retrieve simultaneously both temperature and density. This model is running on a CRAY-1 Computer but needs additional verification. An investigation of alternative methods to calculate infrared transmittance has showed that an interpolation scheme does not work for limb-view geometrics with a subsequent potential savings in computer time of one thousand or better. Though the concept has been proved, the ultimate accuracy of this method has still to be evaluated.

Book excerpt: The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is the lowermost part of the atmosphere in the vicinity of the Earth's surface. It plays a vital role in the exchange of heat, momentum, humidity and other trace substances with the Earth's surface. The boundary layer is extremely important for air quality and health related issues as it is associated with the first few kilometers above the surface. Boundary layer height diurnally evolves as solar radiation waxes and wanes. Though balloon soundings of atmospheric temperature, pressure, and winds are performed in many world-wide locations, they are only done twice a day, primarily for large scale weather forecasting applications, leaving much of the boundary layer evolution and structure without assessment. Ground-based remote sensing methods have been developed to provide detailed knowledge of the boundary layer. This thesis presents the surface-based Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer measurements of the downwelling thermal infrared radiance spectrum emitted by various gases in the cloud-free atmosphere. Measurements were carried out both in early morning hours and late in the afternoon where the temperature profile changes from inverted due to overnight radiative cooling by the surface, to super adiabatic due to intense solar heating at the surface. The measured spectra are compared to the model spectra to infer the structure of the boundary layer. A simple approximate analytical expression for the weighting function, which is crucial to solve the radiative transfer equation (RTE) and retrieve the temperature and gaseous concentration profiles of the ABL, has been developed. The validity of the analytical form of the weighting function was evaluated by comparison with a numerical model.

Book excerpt: The Atmospheric Sounder Spectrometer by Infrared Spectral Technology (ASSIST) measures the absolute infrared (IR) spectral radiance (watts per square meter per steradian per wavenumber) of the sky directly above the instrument. More information about the instrument can be found through the manufacturer’s website. The spectral measurement range of the instrument is 3300 to 520 wavenumbers (cm-1) or 3-19.2 microns for the normal-range instruments and 3300 to 400 cm-1 or 3-25 microns, for the extended-range polar instruments. Spectral resolution is 1.0 cm-1. Instrument field-of-view is 1.3 degrees. Calibrated sky radiance spectra are produced on cycle of about 141 seconds with a group of 6 radiance spectra zenith having dwell times of about 14 seconds each interspersed with 55 seconds of calibration and mirror motion. The ASSIST data is comparable to the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) data and can be used for 1) evaluating line-by-line radiative transport codes, 2) detecting/quantifying cloud effects on ground-based measurements of infrared spectral radiance (and hence is valuable for cloud property retrievals), and 3) calculating vertical atmospheric profiles of temperature and water vapor and the detection of trace gases.
