Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under this MRI funded by HEL JTO and AFOSR, UCLA, in collaboration with Michigan Tech, Georgia Tech, MZA Associates Corporation, Tempest Technologies, Trex Enterprises Corporation, ATK Mission Research and the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), has established a comprehensive research program in high-performance control of high energy lasers (HEL), modeling and simulation of HEL, wavefront sensing, and target tracking. Under this program, researchers have developed adaptive filtering and control methods for wavefront prediction and correction and precise pointing of laser beams to compensate for the effects of atmospheric turbulence, platform vibration, target motion and sensor noise, all of which degrade the performance of laser weapons and communication systems. The research team for this multidisciplinary research initiative has made a comprehensive, integrated attack on the broad range of modeling and simulation, beam control, and target tracking problems that must be solved to achieve the potential of high energy laser systems. This report discusses the main results of the research.

Download or read book Propagation of High Energy Laser Beams in Various Environments written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the results of our theoretical study on the key physical processes that affect the propagation of nigh energy lasers in the atmosphere. The main objective of this study is to discuss the optimum laser wavelength and power for efficient propagation in maritime, desert, rural and urban atmospheric environments. The theoretical/numerical model used in this study includes the effects of aerosol and molecular scattering, aerosol heating and vaporization, thermal blooming due to aerosol and molecular absorption, atmospheric turbulence, and beam quality. These processes are modeled in a fully three-dimensional and time-dependent manner. It is found that aerosol particles are particularly important because they result in laser scattering, absorption and enhanced thermal blooming. In the water vapor transmission windows, the total absorption coefficient driving thermal blooming can be caused mainly by aerosols and not water vapor. In certain maritime environments the deleterious effects of aerosols can be reduced by vaporization. Aerosol particles which cannot be vaporized, such as those Consisting of dust, soot, etc., can significantly increase thermal blooming. The optimum wavelength and power for propagation are found for each atmospheric environment.

Book Synopsis Directed Energy Weapons by : Bahman Zohuri
Download or read book Directed Energy Weapons written by Bahman Zohuri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves deeply into the real-world technologies behind the ‘directed energy weapons’ that many believe exist only within the confines of science fiction. On the contrary, directed energy weapons such as high energy lasers are very real, and this book provides a crash course in all the physical and mathematical concepts that make these weapons a reality. Written to serve both scientists researching the physical phenomena of laser effects, as well as engineers focusing on practical applications, the author provides worked examples demonstrating issues such as how to solve for heat diffusion equation for different boundary and initial conditions. Several sections are devoted to reviewing and dealing with solutions of diffusion equations utilizing the aid of the integral transform techniques. Ultimately this book examines the state-of-the-art in currently available high energy laser technologies, and suggests future directions for accelerating practical applications in the field.“br>/div

This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of moments is used to define and derive expressions for laser beam deflection and beam radius broadening for high-energy propagation through the Earth s atmosphere. These expressions are augmented with the integral invariants of the corresponding nonlinear parabolic equation that describes the electric field of high-energy laser beam to propagation to yield universal equations for the aforementioned quantities; the beam deflection is a linear function of the propagation distance whereas the beam broadening is a quadratic function of distance. The coefficients of these expressions are then derived from a thin screen approximation solution of the nonlinear parabolic equation to give corresponding analytical expressions for a target located outside the Earth s atmospheric layer. These equations, which are graphically presented for a host of propagation scenarios, as well as the thin screen model, are easily amenable to the phase expansions of the wave front for the specification and design of adaptive optics algorithms to correct for the inherent phase aberrations. This work finds application in, for example, the analysis of beamed energy propulsion for space-based vehicles. Manning, Robert M. Book Synopsis Numerical/Optical Simulation of Laser Beam Propagation Through Atmospheric Turbulence by :
Download or read book Numerical/Optical Simulation of Laser Beam Propagation Through Atmospheric Turbulence written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project, computer simulation and optical modeling of laser beam propagation through the turbulent atmosphere, as well as development of techniques using photorefractive crystals to mitigate phase distortions in laser beams, have been done. In the framework of the first direction the mathematical methods and computational schemes based on split step operators, phase screen model and the Monte Carlo method have been elaborated. Spatial statistics of light field in laser beam has been studied in relation to inner and outer scales for different models of atmospheric turbulence. Regimes of weak, moderate and strong fluctuations have been considered. In the framework of the second direction the possibility of simulation of double pass and anisoplanatic effects by means of few phase screens has been studied. An experimental set up for optical modeling anisoplanatic effects by the use of dynamic phase modulator has been designed. A method of generation of random optical field with variable correlation function has been proposed and tested. In the framework of the third direction the problem of mitigation of distorted optical signals in photorefractive crystals has been studied. An optimal effective operating range of one way system, based on nonlinear interaction of distorted signal with pumping formed by spatial filtering of the signal, has been found. Using the criterion of maximal mitigation of phase and amplitude distortions, the schemes of two and four beam interaction in InP:Fe have been optimized.
