Of particular concern is the altitude region below 250 km. Few measurements are presently available in this region and data are urgently required by the Air Force for accurate ephemeris, trajectory, and reentry predictions. Profiles of neutral atmospheric density obtained at low satellite altitudes in the southern hemisphere during geomagnetically quiet conditions are described in this report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profiles of the neutral atmospheric density have been obtained at high and middle latitudes in the southern hemisphere from OV1-15 (SPACES) satellite accelerometer measurements. The data were obtained during a geomagnetically quiet period near the equinox, 24-28 September 1968, when the satellite was in a nearly down-dusk orbit. Perigee moved from 50 degrees S to 65 degrees S during this period. Measurements were made in the altitude range 170-250 km. Density values at dusk at high latitudes (before perigee) are less than those at midlatitudes (after perigee). The average difference between the high latitude and midlatitude data is 15 percent. A longitudinal variation is superimposed on the latitudinal gradients. Enhanced densities at high southern latitudes are found at longitudes near the south geomagnetic pole. (Author).

Book excerpt: Measurements from the accelerometer experiments on four low-altitude satellites (S3-1 and Atmosphere Explorer-C, -D, and -E) have been combined to produce an empirical model of the neutral mass density from 140 to 240 km. Data from over a 8000 orbits are analyzed using the least-squares method of multiple linear regression. The resulting model gives density as a function of solar flux (for flux values 60 to 130 units), geomagnetic activity, day of year, local time, latitude and altitude. It provides a more accurate fit to the measured data than other available atmospheric models. Three commonly used models are evaluated by comparison of their predicted density variations with those of this empirical model.

Book excerpt: A knowledge of atmospheric density and its variation at satellite altitudes is needed for operational support of several military activities. Atmospheric density data computed from the decay rates of more than 40 satellites orbited during a five-year period were analyzed during this investigation. Multiple regression equations were derived to specify the density at 10-km intervals at altitudes from 180 to 300 km as a function of solar activity, time of day, time of year, and combinations of these variables. Density values depicted by these regression equations were then compared with density data which had not been used during the derivation of the equations. The results of this investigation indicate that multiple regression analysis and the associated screening procedure can produce equations from which computed density values are in close agreement with observed density data. The results lead to a conclusion that no single density model can meet all needs. These results also indicate that characteristics of a density model should be selected to fit the purpose for which the model is intended. Four possible density models designed for different purposes are suggested. (Author).

Book excerpt: A re-entry space vehicle development program, such as Project Apollo, requires a knowledge of the variability of atmospheric density from the surface of the earth to re-entry altitude (120 km). This report summarizes the data on density given in the most recent literature on the subject. The range of atmospheric density with respect to the ARDC 1959 Model Atmosphere is determined and shown graphically. From the surface to 30 km altitude abundant information on density is available. From 30 to 90 km altitude the summarized reports of observations made at a limited number of stations have been used. Between 90 and 120 km altitude the density is somewhat speculative, there being but few measurements available. Therefore, the qualitative values for the variability of density above 30 km must be considered tentative. Variations of atmospheric density by latitude and seasons made it necessary to develop a family of curves rather than a single profile. Three curves are presented to show the range of density deviation versus altitudes with respect to the ARDC 1959 Model Atmosphere. Each curve is used for a specific latitude range and season.

Book excerpt: The Cannon Ball II and SPADES satellites carried triaxial accelerometer systems for accurate measurement of neutral atmospheric density. Cannon Ball II was launched 6 August 1971 into a polar elliptic orbit in which the initial perigee was at the extremely low altitude of 132 km. SPADES was launched 11 July 1968 into a polar elliptic orbit in which the initial perigee was at 155 km. The data, analyzed to deduce an average density profile for each satellite for summer conditions in the northern hemisphere, are for the altitude region 135 to 250 km, where measurements have heretofore been extremely sparse. Comparisons were made with recent models and experimental data. These results are intended to be supplemented by those of lower-thermosphere studies now being carried out on accelerometer data from the Atmosphere Explorer satellites and a low-altitude Air Force satellite. Comprehensive analyses of accelerometer data low-altitude satellites will allow accurate modeling of the lower thermosphere. These models are required for improving calculation of the trajectories of Air Force systems vehicles and other spacecraft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of density with latitude and season has been derived above 200 km from satellite orbital decay (drag) data and the character of solar upper-atmosphere heating deduced from astronomy. The meridional density decreases from the equator to the poles, except for the summer in the respective hemisphere, where there is little or no gradient, and the fall in the northern hemisphere, which has a marked increase in density from the equator to 30 degrees - 40N. This latter trait is anomalous and unexplained. The density over the southern hemisphere in winter is less than that over the northern hemisphere in winter at the same altitude; the minimum density is found over the south pole. When the diurnal (longitude) effect is included, the isopycnics delineating the density bulge caused by the sun are asymmetric. At 200 km, the longitudinal density gradient is much less than at 800 km, so that the relative density contours are oriented more east-west than north-south, as at 800 km. A simple explanation is given for the semi-annual effect on the upper-atmosphere density found by Paetzold and Zschorner in satellite orbital decay data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scaling factors for atmospheric density were computed from Doppler observations made on polar satellites at an altitude of 1000 km. The scaling factors, which were computed at 48 hours intervals, show that the atmospheric at 1000 km altitude is affected by increases in solar flux and magnetic index as has been previously noted for satellites at lower altitudes. The prediction errors for the satellites are about 25 meters after 24 hours and about 100 meters after 48 hours. (Author).
