Book Synopsis Biosphere-Atmosphere Exchange of Pollutants and Trace Substances by : Sjaak Slanina
Download or read book Biosphere-Atmosphere Exchange of Pollutants and Trace Substances written by Sjaak Slanina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biosphere is the ultimate sink for air pollutants and is also the source of many precursors for the formation of photo-oxidants. In any analysis of air pollution and for determining source-receptor relationships, reliable emission and pollutant concentrations or depositions must be taken into account, together with their interactions between the atmosphere and the biosphere. This book presents a number of authoritative review articles covering topics which include biosphere-atmosphere exchange of ammonia, nitrogen oxides, ozone and sulfur-containing gases, the biological mechanisms involved in the exchange of trace gases, as well as generalizations of deposition over Europe.

The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.
Book Synopsis Earth Science and Applications from Space by : National Research Council
Download or read book Earth Science and Applications from Space written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and human-induced changes in Earth's interior, land surface, biosphere, atmosphere, and oceans affect all aspects of life. Understanding these changes requires a range of observations acquired from land-, sea-, air-, and space-based platforms. To assist NASA, NOAA, and USGS in developing these tools, the NRC was asked to carry out a "decadal strategy" survey of Earth science and applications from space that would develop the key scientific questions on which to focus Earth and environmental observations in the period 2005-2015 and beyond, and present a prioritized list of space programs, missions, and supporting activities to address these questions. This report presents a vision for the Earth science program; an analysis of the existing Earth Observing System and recommendations to help restore its capabilities; an assessment of and recommendations for new observations and missions for the next decade; an examination of and recommendations for effective application of those observations; and an analysis of how best to sustain that observation and applications system.

Book Synopsis Transport and Chemical Transformation of Pollutants in the Troposphere by : Peter Borrell
Download or read book Transport and Chemical Transformation of Pollutants in the Troposphere written by Peter Borrell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major environmental concern is the increasing burden on all scales of photo-oxidants, acidifying substances and potential nutrients in the troposphere. These lead to episodes of summer smog, and appreciable damage to eco-systems both on land and at sea. Underlying the environmental effects is the complex scientific problem of linking the man-made and biological emissions to the myriad chemical reactions that transform the pollutants as they are transported to and deposited in the surroundings and also pristine areas remote from the sources. The project, the scientific results of which are described in this book, was set up to study the problem in an inter-disciplinary way by co-ordinating the work of more than 150 research groups in some 20 countries.

Book excerpt: In this book the research on atmospheric deposition of the Dutch Priority Programme on Acidification Research is summarised. Although most research described is of Dutch origin, it has been put into a broader perspective by outlining the state of knowledge on the process affecting atmospheric deposition in Europe. This has resulted in detailed deposition maps for the Netherlands and Europe. The volume is intended for those who measure or model atmospheric deposition and ecologists interested in exposure from atmospheric deposition, as well as policy-makers and students.
Book Synopsis Determining Atmospheric Deposition in Wyoming with IMPROVE and Other National Programs by : Karl Zeller
Download or read book Determining Atmospheric Deposition in Wyoming with IMPROVE and Other National Programs written by Karl Zeller and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric deposition is the result of air pollution gases and aerosols leaving the atmosphere as "dry" or "wet" deposition. Little is known about just how much pollution is deposited onto soils, lakes and streams. To determine the extent and trends of forest exposure to air pollution, various types of monitoring have been conducted. In this study, we evaluate data from different rural air monitoring programs to determine whether or not they may have wider applications in resource monitoring and protection. This report analyzes location-specific data collected by three national programs: The CASTNET (NDDN) Network supported by the Environmental Protection Agency, the IMPROVE (Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments) network supported by federal land managers, and the NADP/NTN program supported by many agencies.
Book Synopsis Topics in Micrometeorology. A Festschrift for Arch Dyer by : B.B. Hicks
Download or read book Topics in Micrometeorology. A Festschrift for Arch Dyer written by B.B. Hicks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the micrometeorological literature, reference is sometimes made to the 'Businger-Dyer Profiles' or the 'Dyer-Businger profiles/relations' without referring to the origin of these relations. For example, in the textbook on 'Atmospheric Turbulence' by Panofsky and Dutton (1984) on p. 134, reference is made to the 'Businger-Dyer formula'. To add to the mystery, these authors refer on p. 141 to the Businger-Dyer-Pandolfo empirical result (Businger, 1966; Pandolfo, 1966) that in unstable air • Z r (1) Ri=-== ... L So it seemed to me that it would be appropriate for this issue of Boundary-Layer Meteorology which is dedicated to Arch Dyer, to go back to 1965 and describe the circumstances that led to the above mentioned profiles as I remember them. 2. Aspendale, 1965 In the academic year 1965-1966 I found myself in Australia on a sabbatical leave. The first part of this leave was spent at the CSIRO Division of Meteorological Physics in Aspendale, Victoria. It was in many ways a good choice. The fall is exchanged for spring, SE Australia is a pleasant place to be in spring and summer, and the scientists in the division were hospitable and stimulating. Priestley, Swinbank, Dyer, Webb, McIlroy, Taylor, Clarke, Deacon and several others carried out an active research program.

Book Synopsis Global Atmospheric Change and its Impact on Regional Air Quality by : Ian Barnes
Download or read book Global Atmospheric Change and its Impact on Regional Air Quality written by Ian Barnes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-11-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO ARW in Irkutsk was an excellent occasion for the coming together of Eastern and Western scientists who are involved in tropospheric science; the workshop has greatly contributed to the scientific and social understanding among the participants from the many different countries. Many new personal contacts were made which will help to strengthen future collaborations. In particular, the Lake Baikal area and the Limnological Institute offer splendid opportunities for environmental research which, in part, is already on going. For most participants it was the first time to see the impressive nature of the Lake Baikal region. Hopefully, there will be a chance for a follow-up event in Siberia where researchers from the East and West can again meet and engage in fruitful scientific dialogue. The book contains extended abstracts of the lectures and the poster presentations presented at the NATO ARW "Global Atmospheric Change and its Impact on Regional Air Quality" Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, Russian Federation, August 21-27, 2001. The ARW was composed of 22 oral presentations by key lecturers and 6 additional shorter oral presentations from participants. In a special poster session the 36 poster contributions were presented and discussed. Unfortunately not all contributors submitted extended abstracts, however, to compensate two contributions have been added from 2 participants who were originally invited but were unable to attend.
