Book Synopsis Manual of Brazilian Portuguese Linguistics by : Johannes Kabatek
Download or read book Manual of Brazilian Portuguese Linguistics written by Johannes Kabatek and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is the first comprehensive account of Brazilian Portuguese linguistics written in English, offering not only linguists but also historians and social scientists new insights gained from the intensive research carried out over the last decades on the linguistic reality of this vast territory. In the 20 overview chapters, internationally renowned experts give detailed yet concise information on a wide range of language-internal as well as external synchronic and diachronic topics. Most of this information is the fruit of large-scale language documentation and description projects, such as the project on the linguistic norm of educated speakers (NURC), the project “Grammar of spoken Portuguese”, and the project “Towards a History of Brazilian Portuguese” (PHPB), among others. Further chapters of high contemporary interest and relevance include the study of linguistic policies and psycholinguistics. The manual offers theoretical insights of general interest, not least since many chapters present the linguistic data in the light of a combination of formal, functional, generative and sociolinguistic approaches. This rather unique feature of the volume is achieved by the double authorship of some of the relevant chapters, thus bringing together and synthesizing different perspectives.
Book Synopsis A Framework for Critical Transnational Research by : Manuela Guilherme
Download or read book A Framework for Critical Transnational Research written by Manuela Guilherme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By foregrounding successful transnational research projects conducted across Latin America and Europe, this edited collection contests epistemological hegemony and heterogeneity in the academy and highlights feasible models for research cooperation across diverse languages, cultures, and epistemologies. Chapters focus on the practical and theoretical tenets of responsible intra-national research and propose the "Glocacademia" framework as a means of enhancing critical reflection on issues that can inhibit plurilingual, intercultural, and inter-epistemic research. The text offers key recommendations to support institutions and researchers to develop intercultural awareness, multi-level citizenship, and a readiness to embrace diverse knowledge ecologies. The book builds on existing discussions on multiculturalism, interculturality, and transculturality to offer high academic value to the discussion of higher education and research. Offering important contributions to the study of global academic research, this volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers with an interest in international and comparative education, as well as multicultural studies in education research.
Book Synopsis Atlas Linguístico do Brasil by : Suzana Alice Marcelino da Silva Cardoso
Download or read book Atlas Linguístico do Brasil written by Suzana Alice Marcelino da Silva Cardoso and published by SciELO - EDUEL. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Language Mapping by : Jürgen Erich Schmidt
Download or read book Language Mapping written by Jürgen Erich Schmidt and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Language Mapping aims to explore the core methodological and theoretical approaches of linguistic cartography. In both empirical and theoretical linguistics, the spatial variation of language is of increasing interest and the visualization of language in space is therefore also of growing significance. It is the precondition for correct data interpretation. But how does it work? What has to be considered when drawing a map? And how has the problem been tackled so far? This book provides answers to such questions by taking a closer look at the theoretical issues surrounding cartography and at the concrete practice of mapping. The fundamental issues raised are addressed particularly well, since linguistic geography is not only one of the domains with a lengthy tradition, it is also one of the most progressive fields in linguistics. At the same time, because of their visual primacy, linguistic maps directly confront the challenges of human perception and aesthetics. In this context, envisioning the fruits of language mapping is a fascinating and inspiring endeavor, not just for experts. With its accessible texts and wealth of full-color images, the handbook not only represents a comprehensive manual serving the interests of a variety of readers, it also fills a gap in the ongoing linguistic discourse.
Book Synopsis Wh-exclamatives, Imperatives and Wh-questions by : Simone Guesser
Download or read book Wh-exclamatives, Imperatives and Wh-questions written by Simone Guesser and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on left periphery phenomena has increased in the last 20 years, resulting in consistent studies from a wide range of languages and a fruitful debate on the functional projections within the CP system. Throughout these years, important contributions have been made on Brazilian Portuguese, especially on wh-interrogative sentences, focalization, topicalization and relative clauses. As for exclamative and imperative sentences, however, there is a considerable research gap in all grammatical levels. Regarding interrogatives, semantic and prosodic studies are still lacking (as well as research on the acquisition and processing of these constructions). This collected volume fills some of those gaps, gathering studies on wh-exclamatives, imperatives and wh-questions in Brazilian Portuguese which approach syntactical, semantical and prosodic aspects of these constructions through a rich and unregistered set of data. They also deliver novel acquisition and diachronic data that will further both the comprehension of Brazilian Portuguese grammar and the ongoing discussions on left periphery phenomena.
