Book excerpt: From the point of view of plant geography, including various aspects of chorology, one of the prerequisites of successful large-scale synthesis of this type is and adequate flora covering the area in question, and providing a common language in respect to the delimitation and nomenclature of the taxa to be treated. This essential conditon is now fulfilled for Europe by the current volumes of Flora Europaeae. This new series of compendium atlas volumes makes available allthe distribution maps so far produced by the commitee for mapping the flora of Europe in convenient library editons and in the format and livery of Flora Europaeae. A thirds volume containing the caryophllacaeae is in preparation.

Book excerpt: The Atlas of Seeds and Fruits of Central and East-European Flora presents nearly 4,800 seed illustrations, supplemented with detailed seed descriptions, brief plant descriptions, and information on the locality and the native source of plants. The Carpathian flora covered here occurs not only in the Carpathian Mountains, but also in large lowlands extending towards the south, north and east and involves introduced and invading flora of more than 7,500 species. This publication is unique on two counts. Its scope extends to an unprecedented number of different plant seeds from a wide-ranging region. Moreover, it presents descriptions in unusual detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, spawned a multitude of pro grammes aimed at assessing, managing and conserving the earth's biological diversity. One important issue addressed at the conference was the mountain environment. A specific feature of high mountains is the so-called alpine zone, i. e. the treeless regions at the uppermost reaches. Though covering only a very small proportion of the land surface, the alpine zone contains a rela tively large number of plants, animals, fungi and microbes which are specifi cally adapted to cold environments. This zone contributes fundamentally to the planet's biodiversity and provides many resources for mountain dwelling as well as lowland people. However, rapid and largely man-made changes are affecting mountain ecosystems, such as soil erosion, losses of habitat and genetic diversity, and climate change, all of which have to be addressed. As stated in the European Community Biodiversity Strategy, "the global scale of biodiversity reduction or losses and the interdependence of different species and ecosystems across national borders demands concerted international action". Managing biodiversity in a rational and sustainable way needs basic knowledge on its qualitative and quantitative aspects at local, regional and global scales. This is particularly true for mountains, which are distributed throughout the world and are indeed hot spots of biodiversity in absolute terms as well as relative to the surrounding lowlands.

During the 18th IUFRO World Congress in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, in September 1986, details were worked out for the contents of this book. This book is a truly international effort, prepared in the traditional IUFRO spirit of selfless co-operation. In all, 24 authors from 9 countries are involved. Each chapter was reviewed by two editors from two different countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume should be seen as an extension to both the existing publications for pollen identification and traditional floras based on gross morphology. In the NEPF a pollen type provides the basis for a hierarchical construction around which the diversity of palynomorphs can be organised and interpreted. It is not a physical specimen in a herbarium, as is the type of a species name, but rather a published account comprising detailed descriptions and comprehensive illustration. In Volume VIII of "The Northwest European Pollen Flora" the following families are studied: Osmundaceae, Azollaceae, Salviniaceae, Droseraceae, Aizoaceae, Aristolochiaceae, Rhamnaceae, Vitaceae, Betulaceae (incl. Corylaceae), Myricaceae, Onagracea and Lythraceae.
