Book excerpt: ONCE UPON ATARI is an intimate view into the dramatic rise and fall of the early video game industry, and how it shaped the life of one of its key players. This book offers eye-opening details and insights, delivered in a creative style that mirrors the industry it reveals. An innovative work from one of the industry's original innovators. This is a detailed look behind the scenes of the early days of video games, with particular attention to the causative factors leading up to the video game crash of the early 1980s. It is also the journey of one industry pioneer, and how his experience creating some of the world's most noted pieces of interactive entertainment reverberates throughout his life. It is a compelling and dramatic tale of innocence, greed, exuberance, hubris, joy, devastation and ultimately redemption, told in a fresh voice and an unorthodox style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, this second edition is a faithful reproduction of the original, classic book that boasts 31 easy to use Atari BASIC programs. Simply type them in and use them to manage your checkbook or to keep an inventory of household good. You can even play graphic games, shooting down MIG fighters or battling the monster Grendel, or one of the evil Ghost Town Vampire girls. You can also compose music, encrypt or decrypt private files. What's special about this book is that its programs take advantage of all the sophistication of Atari BASIC. Its 6502 Motorola main processor talks to a separate graphics chip which offers great graphics for games, a feature that was unavailable on other home computers of the time. More particularly, in addition to graphics, Atari BASIC supports sound, (SOUND statement), graphics (GRAPHICS, SETCOLOR, COLOR, PLOT and DRAWTO) and peripheral units like joysticks (STICK, STRIG) and paddles (PADDLE, PTRIG). Other home computer users were often left with cryptic PEEKs and POKEs for such programming. As such, this book's litany of programs provides a self teaching guide to all the nuances of Atari Basic.

Excerpt: Atari BASIC is a BASIC interpreter for the Atari 8-bit family of 6502-based home computers. The interpreter originally shipped on an 8 KB cartridge; on later XL/XE model computers it was built in, with an option to disable it, and started when the machines were booted with no other cartridges in place. The complete commented source code and design specifications of Atari BASIC were published as a book in 1983. This marked the first time source code was made available for a commercial language. The output of a small program using GRAPHICS 2 mode. The text says in READY. In the nomenclature of the time when these machines were designed, "K" was taken to mean one kilobyte, so that is how it is expressed here. Similarly, further, on the family of processors use by Atari machines, in the assembly language "$" introduced a hexadecimal number, or it was suffixed subscripted with its radix, so, for example, "one hundred and twenty-eight" is "12810," "$80," or "8016." If a number is expressed with no radix, decimal (10) is assumed, and a leading 0 does not imply octal. These are used instead of more modern conventions because they appear as such in many of the sources and will be seen often by those using simulators and so forth. The machines that would become the Atari 8-bit family had originally been developed as second-generation games consoles intended to replace the Atari 2600. Ray Kassar, ...
