Download or read book The Lyric Poem written by Marion Thain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a study of lyric poetry, in English, from the early modern period to the present, this book explores one of the most ancient and significant art forms in Western culture as it emerges in its various modern incarnations. Combining a much-needed historicisation of the concept of lyric with an aesthetic and formal focus, this collaboration of period-specialists offers a new cross-historical approach. Through eleven chapters, spanning more than four centuries, the book provides readers with both a genealogical framework for the understanding of lyric poetry within any particular period, and a necessary context for more general discussion of the nature of genre.

Book Synopsis Lyric Poem and Aestheticism by : Marion Thain
Download or read book Lyric Poem and Aestheticism written by Marion Thain and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores lyric poetry's response to a crisis of relevance in Victorian Modernity, offering an analysis of literature usually elided by studies of the modern formation of the genre and uncovering previously unrecognized discourses within it. Setting the focal aestheticist poetry (c. 1860 to 1914) within much broader historical, theoretical and aesthetic frames, it speaks to those interested in Victorian and modernist literature and culture, but also to a burgeoning audience of the 'new lyric studies'. The six case studies introduce fresh poetic voices as well as giving innovative analyses of canonical writers (such as D. G. Rossetti, Ezra Pound, A. C. Swinburne).

Book Synopsis A Reader's Guide to the Narrative and Lyric Poetry of Thomas Lovell Beddoes by : Rodney Edgecombe
Download or read book A Reader's Guide to the Narrative and Lyric Poetry of Thomas Lovell Beddoes written by Rodney Edgecombe and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beddoes poses a peculiar problem for critics and scholars who wish to redress the marginal position that he occupies in the Romantic canon – a problem seemingly unique to him, and created in part by his misconception of his own strengths as a writer. An extremely good poet who, had things turned out differently, might have functioned as a missing link between Keats and Tennyson, he fatally divided his attention between verse and medicine, a discipline that by his own admission (made in the poem composed for Zoë King) served to wither his creative gift. This fission of energy was bad enough, but more damaging still was his misconception of metier, for whatever mental resources remained to Beddoes after gruelling days in the classroom he invested in writing an unstageable drama instead of in his primary gift for lyric verse. Whereas the Beddoes revival that has been gathering momentum in recent years has centred on Death's Jest-Book, the play onto which the poet directed – some might say ‘misdirected’ – so much of his creative energy, this study focuses wholly on his lyric and narrative verse, much of which has received short critical shrift. It follows the sequence of poems set out in the Donner edition, and focuses on their verbal richness and inventiveness as they unspool upon the page.
Book Synopsis Halleck's New English Literature by : Reuben Post Halleck
Download or read book Halleck's New English Literature written by Reuben Post Halleck and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Halleck's New English Literature" furnishes a concise account of the history and growth of English literature from the earliest times to the present day. It lays special emphasis on literary movements, on the essential qualities that differentiate one period from another, and on the spirit that animates each age. Above all, the constant purpose has been to arouse in the student an enthusiastic desire to read the works of the authors discussed. Because of the author's belief in the guide-book function of a history of literature, he has spent much time and thought in preparing the unusually detailed Suggested Readings that follow each chapter.
Book Synopsis Poetry Kaleidoscope by : Nicolae Sfetcu
Download or read book Poetry Kaleidoscope written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction in poetry: nature of poetry, tools, history, terms (periods, styles and movements, technical means, tropes, measures of verse, verse forms, national poetry... Poetry (ancient Greek: ποιεω (poieo) = I create) is traditionally a written art form (although there is also an ancient and modern poetry which relies mainly upon oral or pictorial representations) in which human language is used for its aesthetic qualities in addition to, or instead of, its notional and semantic content. The increased emphasis on the aesthetics of language and the deliberate use of features such as repetition, meter and rhyme, are what are commonly used to distinguish poetry from prose, but debates over such distinctions still persist, while the issue is confounded by such forms as prose poetry and poetic prose. Some modernists (such as the Surrealists) approach this problem of definition by defining poetry not as a literary genre within a set of genres, but as the very manifestation of human imagination, the substance which all creative acts derive from.

Book Synopsis Anglo-German Interactions in the Literature of the 1890s by : Patrick Bridgwater
Download or read book Anglo-German Interactions in the Literature of the 1890s written by Patrick Bridgwater and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a study of what the main ""aesthetic"" writers of late 19th-century Britain made of German literature, and of how Germany in turn reacted to them. The impact of Anglo-Scottish art nouveau in fin-de-siecle Austria and Germany made it predictable that Keats, Pater and Rossetti, among others, would be well received, but no one could have known in advance that by the time of their deaths, Swinburne and Wilde would be more highly regarded in Germany than in Britain. Bridgwater's documented study casts light on the central cultural issues of the day, including ideas of morality, truth and subjectivism in art, comparing Pater and Wilde with Nietzsche, and George Moore, that chameleon of the decadent 90s, with Schopenhauer."
