Book excerpt: This book contains the complete trilogy of the Fate's Warriors series. Note: This series contains characters from the Mortis, Shifter Squad and Hellscourge series, but it can be read as a standalone series. God of Mischief: Locked in a never-ending battle for supremacy, the balance between good and evil is approaching a climax that will determine the destiny of every living being. Advocate for Order, Fate has chosen three warriors to face the agent of Chaos; Loki. Torn from their worlds, Natalie, Lexi and Violet will embark on a multi- dimensional mission. Their task is far more than just to save their own version of Earth. This time, the stakes are much higher. Seeking revenge for being banished from Asgard, Loki has found some unlikely allies to assist him. Once he has defeated Odin and his army, he will turn his attention to Earth. With seven billion slaves to command, nothing will stop him from achieving what he has always craved; ultimate power. Fate isn’t going to make conquering Earth easy for Loki. She uses her well-honed manipulation skills to try to sway him from the dark path he’s chosen. Bianca Caldwell, a helpless mortal who knows nothing about Gods or monsters, will be drawn into the maelstrom with no hope of escape. God of Mayhem: The Shifter Squad is called back into action as Lexi, Natalie and Violet travel to the next dimension in search of their target. Lexi’s world comes under threat from the very being who created shapeshifters so long ago. Again, Loki has allied himself with the Grimgorg, but this time he has new monsters at his beck and call. Loki on the Alpha World continues to strive to keep Bianca Caldwell safe as Fate had instructed him. The girl is an unwanted burden that he wishes he could foist off onto someone else. Instead, he is stuck with her and his very future could depend on keeping her alive. Lexi and her team must once again step up to save their world, but their version of Loki has tricks at his disposal that will make things very difficult for them. They must rely on the two warriors from other realities to help them defeat their enemies. Fate chose them for a reason and they have to trust that neither of them will buckle under the pressure. God of Malice: Violet’s world has only recently recovered from being invaded, but it is now about to be subjected to an attack by aliens. Her angelic and human friends will need to step up once again to save their planet. They will be instrumental in helping Hellscourge and her fellow warriors save humanity from enslavement. Bianca has felt like a pawn ever since she fell into Loki’s arms. When Fate contacts her directly and gives her a task, she realizes her hunch is correct. Her mission is monumental and she isn’t sure that she can pull it off. For the sake of humanity, she has to do the impossible; change the mind of a god. Violet’s version of Loki has allied himself with creatures who are even more sly and treacherous than he is. His choice of partners will prove to be more of a danger than he’d anticipated, but he’d never expected the peril would be to himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belfast, Beirut and Berlin are notorious for their internal boundaries and borders. As symbols for political disunion, the three cities have inspired scriptwriters and directors from diverse cultural backgrounds. Despite their different histories, they share a wide range of features central to divided cities. In each city, particular territories take on specific symbolic and psychological meanings. Following a comparative approach, this book concentrates on the cinematographic representations of Belfast, Beirut and Berlin. Filmmakers are in constant search for new ways in order to engage with urban division. Making use of a variety of genres reaching from thriller to comedy, they explore the three cities' internal and external borders, as well as the psychological boundaries existing between citizens belonging to different communities. Among the characters featuring in films set in Belfast, Berlin and Beirut we may count dangerous gunmen, prisoners' wives, soldiers and snipers, but also comic Stasi-members, punk aficionados and fake nuns. The various characters contribute to the creation of a multifaceted image of city limits in troubled times.

Book excerpt: Set within the cultural and geographical framework of Nigeria, Kunim: Raise Me Up is a collection of not-so-short stories that examine universal themes, such as discrimination and familial discord, as well as culturally specific biases, beliefs, and traditions, as it takes its readers on three very distinct but equally enlightening journeys. In “Fate,” two young, motherless sisters are forced to navigate the often-tumultuous waters of intra-cultural stereotyping and discrimination while their father is away on business. “Shadows” tells the story of a young Nigerian businessman, currently living in the United States, who returns to his home village and falls for a beautiful young woman whose mysterious nature has him rethinking everything he’d thought he understood about himself, the world, and the nature of the supernatural. And finally, in “Eyes that Speak,” a young girl whose parents perpetually keep themselves too busy to even notice her, let alone the unravelling of their own marriage, is feeling disconnected, alone, and fed up with the world until an unexpected kindness from a supposed adversary changes absolutely everything (though perhaps not for the better). Whether the Nigerian culture is your own, familiar to your own, or nothing like your own, the heart of this collection is the universality of the themes, shining a light into the depth of mankind’s complicated nature and how we cope with living as disparate collections of individuals among the larger multitudes, juggling cultural traditions, expectations, and our own instinctive need to belong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unusually polyvalent symbol, fire assumes numerous functions in the Bible. It is a defining feature of theophanies, it serves as an instrument of judgment, and in some instances it cleanses and purifies. Examining a complex of traditions ranging from John the Baptist to Jesus of Nazareth and from the Pauline to the Petrine Epistles, Daniel Frayer-Griggs identifies a recurring motif in the New Testament, arguing that these disparate traditions, which appear in both very early and very late New Testament texts, testify to a shared belief that everyone--both the righteous and the wicked--would be subjected to eschatological judgment by fire and that the righteous would experience this judgment as a fiery ordeal through which they would be tested and, in some cases, ultimately purified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unpacking of the dynamics of conflict under conditions of nuclear monopoly, Paul C. Avey argues in Tempting Fate that the costs and benefits of using nuclear weapons create openings that weak nonnuclear actors can exploit. Avey uses four case studies to show the key strategies available to nonnuclear states: Iraqi decision-making under Saddam Hussein in confrontations with the United States; Egyptian leaders' thinking about the Israeli nuclear arsenal during wars in 1969–70 and 1973; Chinese confrontations with the United States in 1950, 1954, and 1958; and a dispute that never escalated to war, the Soviet-United States tensions between 1946 and 1948 that culminated in the Berlin Blockade. Strategies employed include limiting the scope of the conflict, holding chemical and biological weapons in reserve, seeking outside support, and leveraging international non-use norms. Avey demonstrates clearly that nuclear weapons cast a definite but limited shadow, and while the world continues to face various nuclear challenges, understanding conflict in nuclear monopoly will remain a pressing concern for analysts and policymakers. Thanks to generous funding from Virginia Tech and its participation in TOME, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access volumes, available from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other repositories.
