Otherwise the heroic efforts of Dr. Cheek, and her beloved Kum Tip, both of whom did all but sacrifice their own lives for her, would have availed for her rescue from death. These poor Laos would not have stood paralyzed by their superstitions, and seen her perish for want of the help they could so easily have given, if God had not chosen that way to burn into the heart of the Christian at home the awful bondage of heathenism. On this point we copy from the Bangkok Slant Weekly Advertiser, of February 26th, 1881: "Why was the beloved consort of His Majesty, the late Princess Sunanda Humariratu, so ruthlessly torn from the loving heart of the King of Siam, and quietly permitted to suffocate in this same river, together with the darling daughter of a royal sire, in the immediate presence of a multitude? Was it for lack of knowledge of the art of swimming, or lack of physical ability? Nay, nay! The mental and the physical development were sufficient; but the spiritual was dwarfed. Why was it that thirty-five persons refused assistance, which perhaps every one was able to render, while Dr. Cheek, the medical missionary of Chieng Mai, struggled single-handed, and in a half-dying condition, to bring Miss Campbell to shore?
