Book Synopsis Lug Your Careless Body Out of the Careful Dusk by : Joshua Marie Wilkinson
Download or read book Lug Your Careless Body Out of the Careful Dusk written by Joshua Marie Wilkinson and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from the paintings of Susan Rothenberg, Gwyneth Scally, and Eric Fischl as well as from the photography of Allison Maletz, Joshua Marie Wilkinson’s Lug Your Careless Body out of the Careful Dusk is a book-length poem written in small fragments. Comprised of seven sections, the poem is formed as much by the poet’s travels through Turkey, the Baltics, and Eastern Europe as it is by the movies of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Krzysztof Kieslowski, and Bill Morrison. The painters Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud are here alongside whispers of Emily Dickinson and Wallace Stevens. Lug Your Careless Body out of the Careful Dusk is a book of cinematic images and fragments, of small stories overheard and quickly abandoned, of hidden letters and phone booths, and of ghosts who return with questions. Born and raised in Seattle’s Haller Lake neighborhood, Joshua Marie Wilkinson is the author of one other book of poetry, Suspension of a Secret in Abandoned Rooms, and the chapbook A Ghost as King of the Rabbits. He holds an MFA from the University of Arizona and an MA in film studies from University College Dublin. Presently he lives in Denver, Colorado, where he is pursuing his doctorate in English and creative writing and completing his first film.
Book Synopsis Love and Other Poems by : Alex Dimitrov
Download or read book Love and Other Poems written by Alex Dimitrov and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Dimitrov’s third book, Love and Other Poems, is full of praise for the world we live in. Taking time as an overarching structure—specifically, the twelve months of the year—Dimitrov elevates the everyday, and speaks directly to the reader as if the poem were a phone call or a text message. From the personal to the cosmos, the moon to New York City, the speaker is convinced that love is “our best invention.” Dimitrov doesn’t resist joy, even in despair. These poems are curious about who we are as people and shamelessly interested in hope.

Book Synopsis Sunset Grand Couturier by : Myra Malkin
Download or read book Sunset Grand Couturier written by Myra Malkin and published by Broadstone Books. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems of death, loss, and memory rendered in startling, and startlingly engaging, language and imagery. The closing poem in Myra Malkin's collection SUSNSET GRAND COUTURIER plays with the tale that Sir Walter Raleigh's widow kept his embalmed head as a literal memento mori, and this is a perfect coda for a work dealing with death, loss, and memory in startling, and often startlingly engaging, fashion. To say that many of her poems are inspired by wide array of authors, artists, historical figures, and intellectuals (including her title, taken from Pound's Cantos) is true and evidence of her deep immersion in culture, but these are merely points of departure for her own very original poetic excursions. Penetrating but never ponderous, serious but never self-serious, these are poems of sensitivity, intellectual heft and aesthetic wonder. Poetry.

Where the roots of oak trees recover and repair from their time in the light. Where the porcupette eats delicacies—raspberry leaves!—and coos and sings. Come out to the cool, night wood, and buzz and hoot and howl—but do beware of the great horned owl—for it’s wild and it’s windy way out in the woods!

Book Synopsis Blue City Poets by : Polly Alice McCann
Download or read book Blue City Poets written by Polly Alice McCann and published by . This book was released on 2019-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapbook edited by Polly Alice McCann was inspired by a painting for the 2018 Kansas City Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, edited by an artist, illustrated by a painter, designed by a portrait artist, and filled with the artful words of poets. Poets are often artists and vice versa. This collection weaves together a cross-section of voices that represent differing experiences from a region that crosses one river and two states and as "wide the river bend as you like." These poems certainly have rhythm, and they hold the blueness of the open sky and the soul of Kansas City music. Each poet's voice is a Kansas City voice, and each is true. The book is divided into sections by both a sense of emotion and a sense of place: love and loss and of course urban neighborhoods and sweet farmland. Kansas City is all that and more. Enjoy these poems and art of both heart and heartland.
Download or read book The Color of Dusk written by Robin Caton and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Color of Dusk, Robin Caton bridges traditions of secular, religious, modernist, and post modernist writing to encounter word at its most unsettling, provocative, and urgent. At times conversational, elliptic, meditative, minimalist, expansive, Caton's poems are unified by an insistence to reach, with language, through language, to turn words toward what is ever outside their ability to name.

Book Synopsis Index of Haunted Houses by : Adam O. Davis
Download or read book Index of Haunted Houses written by Adam O. Davis and published by Sarabande Books. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of ghost stories, and for the most part, ghosts are jealous monsters, intent upon our destruction. They never appear overtly here, yet we gradually become aware of their presence the way spirits in haunted houses trod over creaky floors, slam doors, and issue sudden gusts of wind. The poems are Koan-like—the fewer the words, the more charged they are. The engine driving this sense of haunting and loss is money, which Davis describes as “federal bone” boiling around us. Bison in Nebraska are reduced to bones, “seven/standing men/tall” fodder for the fertilizer used by farmers in the 1800s. Though they often specify dates, there’s an equality to the hauntings—every instance has its moment, and persists, despite being in the past, present, or future. If there really was a 1980 or 1848 or 1499, Davis implies it is somewhere. Index of Haunted Houses is spooky and sad—a stunning debut, one that will surprise, convince, and most of all, delight.

Download or read book Unaccompanied written by Javier Zamora and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestselling Author of Solito "Every line resonates with a wind that crosses oceans."—Jamaal May "Zamora's work is real life turned into myth and myth made real life." —Glappitnova Javier Zamora was nine years old when he traveled unaccompanied 4,000 miles, across multiple borders, from El Salvador to the United States to be reunited with his parents. This dramatic and hope-filled poetry debut humanizes the highly charged and polarizing rhetoric of border-crossing; assesses borderland politics, race, and immigration on a profoundly personal level; and simultaneously remembers and imagines a birth country that's been left behind. Through an unflinching gaze, plainspoken diction, and a combination of Spanish and English, Unaccompanied crosses rugged terrain where families are lost and reunited, coyotes lead migrants astray, and "the thin white man let us drink from a hose / while pointing his shotgun." From "Let Me Try Again": He knew we weren't Mexican. He must've remembered his family coming over the border, or the border coming over them, because he drove us to the border and told us next time, rest at least five days, don't trust anyone calling themselves coyotes, bring more tortillas, sardines, Alhambra. He knew we would try again. And again—like everyone does. Javier Zamora was born in El Salvador and immigrated to the United States at the age of nine. He earned a BA at UC-Berkeley, an MFA at New York University, and is a 2016–2018 Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.
Book Synopsis Poems and Stories for Overcoming Idleness by :
Download or read book Poems and Stories for Overcoming Idleness written by and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems and Stories for Overcoming Idleness is the first complete translation in any Western language of P’ahan chip, the earliest Korean work of sihwa (C. shihua; “remarks on poetry”) and one of the oldest extant Korean sources. The collection was written and compiled by Yi Illo (1152–1220) during the mid-Koryǒ dynasty (918–1392). P’ahan chip features poetry composed in Literary Chinese (the scriptura franca of the premodern East Asian “Sinographic Sphere”) by the author and his friends, which included such literary greats as Im Ch’un (dates unknown) and O Sejae (1133–?). P’ahan chip also contains the work of other writers of diverse backgrounds: Chinese master poets, famous Confucian literati, eminent Buddhist masters, erudite Daoist hermits, Koryŏ kings—as well as long-forgotten lower-level officials, unemployed intellectuals, and rural scholars. The verse compositions are embedded in short narratives by Yi that provide context for the poems. In accordance with the guidelines of the sihwa-genre, these narratives focus primarily on matters relating to poetry while touching on a wide array of subjects such as Korean history and customs; the court and government institutions; official procedures and festivals; Koryǒ foreign-policy and diplomacy; books and the circulation of knowledge; calligraphy and painting; Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist thought; the role of women; and scenic spots and famous buildings. The book opens with an extensive introduction by translator Dennis Wuerthner on Yi Illo and P’ahan chip set against the backdrop of literary and historical developments in Korea and sino-centric East Asia and vital issues relating to Koryŏ politics, society, and culture. Wuerthner’s comprehensive, thought-provoking study is followed by a copiously annotated translation of this important Korean classic.
