Book Synopsis Asymptotic Expansions and the Deficiency Concept by : Vladimir Bening

This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present some means for the comparison of the quality of estimators constructed from samples with random sizes with that of estimators constructed from samples with non-random sizes. As this means it is proposed to use the deficiency. We also demonstrate that all those statistics that are regarded as asymptotically normal in the classical sense, become asymptotically Laplace or Student if the sample size is random. We especially separate the case where the Student distribution parameter ("the number degrees of freedom") is small. Thus, the Laplace and Student distributions may be used as an asymptotic approximation in descriptive statistics being a convenient heavy-tailed alternative to stable laws.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development in Statistics, Volume 3 is a collection of papers that deals with asymptotic expansions in parametric statistical theory, orthogonal models for contingency tables, statistical concepts in economic analysis, and an exposition of path analysis. One paper presents an inference model based on a sample of independent identically distributed observations to arrive at a general statistical theory founded on asymptotic methods. Another paper discusses the applicability of statistical concepts to economics and related areas, with emphasis on not-so-obvious applications (known as utility and expected loss). The paper explains information theory concepts for the measurement of income inequality, intergenerational occupational mobility, as well as to first- and second-order moments of univariate and bivariate distributions (such as measurements applied to the cost of living and of real income). One paper notes that the starting point in path analysis is a linear predictor (in the least-squares sense) for one random variable in terms of a number of others. The paper adds that the work of Koopmans and Hood (1953) on econometrics is part of the starting point. Statisticians, economists, mathematicians, students, and professors of calculus or advanced mathematics will surely appreciate the collection.

Book Synopsis Asymptotic Statistics by : Manfred Denker
Download or read book Asymptotic Statistics written by Manfred Denker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-04-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are based on lectures presented during the seminar on " Asymptotic Statistics" held at SchloB Reisensburg, Gunzburg, May 29-June 5, 1988. They consist of two parts, the theory of asymptotic expansions in statistics and probabilistic aspects of the asymptotic distribution theory in nonparametric statistics. Our intention is to provide a comprehensive presentation of these two subjects, leading from elementary facts to the advanced theory and recent results. Prospects for further research are also included. We would like to thank all participants for their stimulating discussions and their interest in the subjects, which made lecturing very pleasant. Special thanks are due H. Zimmer for her excellent typing. We would also like to take this opportunity to to express our thanks to the Gesellschaft fur mathematische Forschung and to the Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung, especially to Professor G. Fischer, for the opportunity to present these lectures and to the Birkhauser Verlag for the publication of these lecture notes. R. Bhattacharya, M. Book Synopsis Selected Works of Peter J. Bickel by : Jianqing Fan
Download or read book Selected Works of Peter J. Bickel written by Jianqing Fan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents selections of Peter J. Bickel’s major papers, along with comments on their novelty and impact on the subsequent development of statistics as a discipline. Each of the eight parts concerns a particular area of research and provides new commentary by experts in the area. The parts range from Rank-Based Nonparametrics to Function Estimation and Bootstrap Resampling. Peter’s amazing career encompasses the majority of statistical developments in the last half-century or about about half of the entire history of the systematic development of statistics. This volume shares insights on these exciting statistical developments with future generations of statisticians. The compilation of supporting material about Peter’s life and work help readers understand the environment under which his research was conducted. The material will also inspire readers in their own research-based pursuits. This volume includes new photos of Peter Bickel, his biography, publication list, and a list of his students. These give the reader a more complete picture of Peter Bickel as a teacher, a friend, a colleague, and a family man.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Statistics by : Johann Pfanzagl
Download or read book Mathematical Statistics written by Johann Pfanzagl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed description of the development of statistical theory. In the mid twentieth century, the development of mathematical statistics underwent an enduring change, due to the advent of more refined mathematical tools. New concepts like sufficiency, superefficiency, adaptivity etc. motivated scholars to reflect upon the interpretation of mathematical concepts in terms of their real-world relevance. Questions concerning the optimality of estimators, for instance, had remained unanswered for decades, because a meaningful concept of optimality (based on the regularity of the estimators, the representation of their limit distribution and assertions about their concentration by means of Anderson’s Theorem) was not yet available. The rapidly developing asymptotic theory provided approximate answers to questions for which non-asymptotic theory had found no satisfying solutions. In four engaging essays, this book presents a detailed description of how the use of mathematical methods stimulated the development of a statistical theory. Primarily focused on methodology, questionable proofs and neglected questions of priority, the book offers an intriguing resource for researchers in theoretical statistics, and can also serve as a textbook for advanced courses in statisticc.
Book Synopsis Selected Works of Willem van Zwet by : Sara van de Geer
Download or read book Selected Works of Willem van Zwet written by Sara van de Geer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-21 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this collections volume, some of the important works of Willem van Zwet are moved to the front layers of modern statistics. The selection was based on discussions with Willem, and aims at a representative sample. The result is a collection of papers that the new generations of statisticians should not be denied. They are here to stay, to enjoy and to form the basis for further research. The papers are grouped into six themes: fundamental statistics, asymptotic theory, second-order approximations, resampling, applications, and probability. This volume serves as basic reference for fundamental statistical theory, and at the same time reveals some of its history.
