Book excerpt: The production of meat is an important income source for farmers in Canada and the U.S. From 2000 to 2004, total livestock account for almost 50% of both Canadian and American farmer income. Canada is the second largest pork exporter and it is the seventh top pork importer. The main trading partners of Canada in pork are the U.S., Japan and Mexico. United States has the largest fed-cattle industry in the world, and is the world's largest producer of beef. It is also the second largest exporter of poultry meat. Both United States and Canada play very important roles in the global meat market. Because studies on price relationships could provide insights into marketing efficiency and welfare distribution between consumers and producers, the competitiveness of stages from the farm production sector to the retail sector have received considerable attention from economists. A lot of past studies found common asymmetric price transmission exist among food market without anticipation of the standard economic theory. Though there is not yet a general theoretical explanation for asymmetric price transmission, most studies point to characteristics associated with imperfect competition as reasons for the phenomenon. So the existence of asymmetric price transmission could be an indicator to policy maker in terms of addressing public policy issues. This thesis uses monthly data over the period 1981-2006 to test asymmetric price transmission from farm prices to retail prices for three commodities: beef, pork and chicken in both the Canadian and U.S. meat markets. A comparative analysis of results from the Wolffram-Houck model and a modified error correction model for testing the symmetry of price transmission were examined. The empirical results suggest that the farm to retail price transmission process is characterized by negative asymmetry in the Canadian pork and U.S. broiler sectors, and positive asymmetry in the Canadian beef sector while it is characterized by symmetry in Canadian chicken, U.S. beef and pork sectors.

Book excerpt: This article investigates the non-linear adjustment between farm and retail prices in the lamb sector in Spain, using a three-regime Threshold Autoregressive Model. The results indicate that, in the long run, price transmission is perfect and any supply or demand shocks are fully transmitted along the marketing chain. In the short run, price adjustments between the farm and the retail levels are asymmetric and reveal a demand-pull transmission mechanism. On the other hand, retailers benefit from any shock, whether positive or negative, that affects supply or demand conditions.

Book excerpt: Studies of market integration show that price changes are transmitted spatially through arbitrage. Transmission across differentiated agricultural products is important to investigate, but it has not been explored given its complexities for assessment. Using data from Australian cattle markets, we examine the dynamics of Meat Standards Australia price premium transmission between states. An impulse response function analysis using Bayesian vector autoregression with sign restriction identification shows that shocks to prices and price premiums are partially transmitted contemporaneously between markets and it takes several weeks to complete transmission. In addition, we find an asymmetry of price and price premium shocks originating in Southern Queensland that have an inverse immediate impact in New South Wales, and take months to transmit the usual price response. This outcome may be explained by differences in cattle availability in each state, which can be related to forage availability due to weather conditions. Based on these results, producers can forecast fluctuations on price premiums and adjust their cattle supply accordingly.

Book excerpt: This book covers the agricultural value chain issues that occur in different parts of the world and aims to increase our understanding about the sustainable agricultural value chain paradigm. By reading through these chapters, the readers will witness various interesting, sometimes sad, commonalities among different regions of the world, where smallholder farmers and producers are severely affected by various agricultural policy deficiencies or mistakes and inexistences. The book consists of 14 chapters, which comprehensively cover over 20 agricultural products from more than 15 different regions of the world. Various qualitative and quantitative research methods are presented including surveys, case studies, interviews, price transmission, risk analysis, and multiagent system technology.

Book excerpt: This book argues that the viability of many observed market and non-market interventions in agricultural products worldwide depends considerably on the underlying behaviour of the relevant commodity markets. Many of these policies have had distortive impacts, resulting in much discussion and controversy in the context of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha Round of trade negotiations.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the nature of price transmission mechanisms in the U.S. and Korean livestock sectors by evaluating dynamic price linkage models of farm, wholesale, and retail prices. The focus of the study is primarily on discovering interrelationships among prices and changes in those interrelationships over time. In particular, the cross-commodity and cross-country effects are emphasized. The analytical tools utilized are time series techniques including stationarity tests, cointegration tests, impulse response functions, and forecast error decomposition. In order to analyze the potential for structural change in price interrelationships, gradual switching models are applied to identify structural breaking points. The livestock products covered in this study include beef, pork, and chicken. Aggregate average monthly data are used. In most cases, a unidirectional causality relation is found; from farm to wholesale and retail prices. Most of the U.S. livestock prices reveal structural breaks in the mid or late 1970's while structural change in Korean livestock prices occurred in the mid or late 1980's. For each commodity price at a certain level of the marketing chain, there is evidence of asymmetric price transmission. Thus, prices in other levels of the market react differently to price increases as opposed to price decreases. In both the United States and Korea, shocks at the farm level are quickly transmitted to downstream marketing channels, whereas shocks at the retail market are not fully transmitted to upstream markets. A common feature found in both countries is that the farm price is the major source affecting other prices. U.S. livestock prices become more exogenous over the period studied implying that interrelationships among prices become weaker. In contrast, Korean prices are increasingly related to each other. It was confirmed that each retail price in both countries affected other prices to a certain extent. The Korean financial crisis brought about structural change in U.S. livestock prices denoted in Korean currency. In general, little interrelationship between U.S. and Korean livestock prices is found with each price moving independently of each other. Only chicken prices of the two countries show some degree of interrelationship.
