Book excerpt: THE CHEMICAL PROCESS industry presents a complex set of materials selection challenges. Conducting corrosion testing of candidate materials under simulated or actual service conditions is widely used in the process of materials selection. ASTM G 4, Guide for Conducting Corrosion Tests in Field Applications and G 31, Practice for Laboratory Immersion Corrosion Testing of Metals, and NACE Standard TM-01-69, Laboratory Corrosion Testing of Metals are the general guides for conducting corrosion tests. While these standards can be very useful in making a preliminary list of the best candidate materials, they are designed primarily for the more common metals and alloys such as steel, aluminum alloys, and copper alloys. Certain portions of these procedures, e.g., cleaning methods, are not applicable to zirconium, hafnium, and their alloys. Although ASTM G 2 is designated specifically for zirconium, hafnium, and their alloys, it is a specific practice used in the nuclear industry. Therefore, a tailored practice for conducting corrosion specimen tests on zirconium, hafnium, and their alloys in chemical environments is needed. The use of test standards that have not been modified for zirconium or hafnium may lead to erroneous or invalid results.

However, this volume offers information on additional environments including concrete, soil, groundwater, distilled water, sodium acetate and more. ThereAs also updated and expanded coverage of previously discussed environments as well as information on environments which deal with the dairy, food, brewing, aerospace, petrochemical and building industries. The environments are listed alphabetically. Each listing includes a general description of the conditions, a comment on the corrosion characteristics of various alloys in such a situation, a bibliography of recent articles specific to the environment, tables consolidating and comparing corrosion rates at various temperatures and concentrations for various alloys, and graphical information. Also included are summaries on the general corrosion characteristics of major metals and alloys.

Book excerpt: Africa’s dire need to industrialize is universally acknowledged and it is evident that the continent’s vast mineral resources can catalyze that industrialization. This requires the promotion of local beneficiation and value addition of minerals to yield materials on which modern Africa’s industry and society can rely. This book is, therefore, about transforming Africa’s comparative advantages in minerals into the continent’s competitive edge regarding materials. Mineral beneficiation and value addition form the basis and provide opportunities for mineral-driven Africa’s industrialization. The scope of the book is three-fold with inter-connected relationships: Information, Technical, and Policy oriented. It will be a useful reference material for mining undergraduate students on beneficiation and value addition of each of the minerals found in Africa. The book, while presenting a broad overview of beneficiation and value addition of Africa’s minerals, provides crucial starting material for postgraduate research students and R&D institutions who wish to delve into more advanced methods of extraction and utilization of mineral-derived materials that are in Africa for the purpose of industrialization of the continent.
