Book Synopsis Clearing the Air by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Clearing the Air written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-05-24 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since about 1980, asthma prevalence and asthma-related hospitalizations and deaths have increased substantially, especially among children. Of particular concern is the high mortality rate among African Americans with asthma. Recent studies have suggested that indoor exposuresâ€"to dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pet dander, tobacco smoke, and other biological and chemical pollutantsâ€"may influence the disease course of asthma. To ensure an appropriate response, public health and education officials have sought a science-based assessment of asthma and its relationship to indoor air exposures. Clearing the Air meets this need. This book examines how indoor pollutants contribute to asthmaâ€"its causation, prevalence, triggering, and severity. The committee discusses asthma among the general population and in sensitive subpopulations including children, low-income individuals, and urban residents. Based on the most current findings, the book also evaluates the scientific basis for mitigating the effects of indoor air pollutants implicated in asthma. The committee identifies priorities for public health policy, public education outreach, preventive intervention, and further research.

Book Synopsis Factors Affecting the Development of Asthma Among Poor and Minority Children and Interventions for Improving Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review by : Nancy Jones Yadav
Download or read book Factors Affecting the Development of Asthma Among Poor and Minority Children and Interventions for Improving Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review written by Nancy Jones Yadav and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children from lower socioeconomic groups and children from some minority groups experience higher rates of childhood asthma than children from higher socioeconomic groups and white children. This thesis is guided by the following research questions: 1) what are the risk factors associated with the development of asthma among poor and minority children and 2) what effect do interventions for all children, in comparison to those for poor and minority children, have on the development of asthma? This review examined peer-reviewed articles published in scholarly journals within the last ten years. Poor air quality, both indoor and outside, and socioeconomic disadvantage are associated with childhood asthma disparities. Interventions that reduced exposure to environmental triggers were effective in improving outcomes for all children with asthma. Interventions effective for children from poor and minority families targeted the child's social environment, including family and community, and took place in the home, or school. Strategies that included culturally appropriate measures were utilized effectively. Interventions that combined allergy testing in order to tailor counseling to the child with more comprehensive strategies, such as addressing barriers to care, and promoting better communication between caregiver and health care provider, were effective in improving outcomes. To inform future policy, more interventions that focus on the populations affected by childhood asthma disparities are needed. Interventions that show health benefits and cost effectiveness are especially important in order to promote wider implementation and reduce disparities in childhood asthma.

Book excerpt: Asthma, Health, and Society A Public Health Perspective Edited by Andrew Harver, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte Harry Kotses, Ohio University, Athens Asthma, Health, and Society is a comprehensive, current resource on this complex disease—its scope, human costs, and management—from a combined social ecology/public health perspective. This important and unique book proposes a concerted, multifaceted response and sets out the foundation for shaping this response, comprising individual and large-scale assessment, education, advocacy, and multiple forms of intervention. In clear, authoritative detail enhanced by figures, graphs, and references, contributors explain where universal standards need to be set, alliances need to be built (such as among agencies and institutions in a community), and what is currently known about: Pathophysiology, epidemiology, and social impact of asthma. Genetic and environmental factors; protective factors and risk markers. Effects in women, minorities, children, teens, and elders. Medical management, self-management, and home monitoring. Evidence-based interventions at the family, school, and community levels. Screening guidelines, compliance issues, and more. In the absence of a cure or clear-cut causes, Asthma, Health, and Society offers the most robust compilation of practical knowledge on its subject to benefit the range of public health and asthma professionals, researchers, teachers, and students

Download or read book Neurological, Psychiatric, and Developmental Disorders written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain disordersâ€"neurological, psychiatric, and developmentalâ€"now affect at least 250 million people in the developing world, and this number is expected to rise as life expectancy increases. Yet public and private health systems in developing countries have paid relatively little attention to brain disorders. The negative attitudes, prejudice, and stigma that often surround many of these disorders have contributed to this neglect. Lacking proper diagnosis and treatment, millions of individual lives are lost to disability and death. Such conditions exact both personal and economic costs on families, communities, and nations. The report describes the causes and risk factors associated with brain disorders. It focuses on six representative brain disorders that are prevalent in developing countries: developmental disabilities, epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and stroke. The report makes detailed recommendations of ways to reduce the toll exacted by these six disorders. In broader strokes, the report also proposes six major strategies toward reducing the overall burden of brain disorders in the developing world.

Book Synopsis Prevalence of Asthma Among Minority Population Children Aged 0-17 Years in the United States by : Jalal AlAlwan
Download or read book Prevalence of Asthma Among Minority Population Children Aged 0-17 Years in the United States written by Jalal AlAlwan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BACKGROUND: "Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways ... In susceptible individuals; this inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing, particularly at night or in the early morning. These episodes are usually associated with widespread but variable airflow obstruction that is often reversible either spontaneously or with treatment. The inflammation also causes an associated increase in the existing bronchial hyper responsiveness to a variety of stimuli" PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study will evaluate the impact of demographic and clinical predictors on the prevalence of childhood asthma among minority children aged 0-17 in United States. METHODS: For this research, data from the 2011-2012 survey will be employed to conduct the required statistical tests using SAS SOFTWARE to answer the addressed research questions. A total of 95,677 NSCH interviews were completed nationally by parents/caregivers of children and youth approximately 1,876 in each state and the District of Columbia, ranging from 1,811 in South Dakota to 2,200 in Texas. The Statistical analysis will begin with an estimation of the national prevalence of asthma among children aged 0-17 years and living in the United States. Characteristics of the sample population will then be compared with the general population to assess if there are differences or validate how the sample population represents the general population. The characteristics in Table 41 will show how levels asthma and severe asthma are distributed among children by their age, gender, race/ethnicity, SES, clinical predictors and insurance status. RESULTS: Results have shown that being from low SES and minority race/ethnicity group (Hispanic, Non-Hispanic Black, and multi R racial/other Non-Hispanic) will increase the asthma and severe asthma rates among children living in the US. DISCUSSION: Conducting a new study on a national scale to display the differences in childhood asthma prevalence among minority population living in United States is valuable for measuring the prevalence of this chronic disease and the discrepancy burden among US children; and for developing intervention programs for minority population living in US. This study will also find what is still confounding and unknown about childhood asthma and recommend areas for further research.
Download or read book Severe Asthma written by Kian Fan Chung and published by European Respiratory Society. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Severe asthma is a form of asthma that responds poorly to currently available medication, and its patients represent those with greatest unmet needs. In the last 10 years, substantial progress has been made in terms of understanding some of the mechanisms that drive severe asthma; there have also been concomitant advances in the recognition of specific molecular phenotypes. This ERS Monograph covers all aspects of severe asthma – epidemiology, diagnosis, mechanisms, treatment and management – but has a particular focus on recent understanding of mechanistic heterogeneity based on an analytic approach using various ‘omics platforms applied to clinically well-defined asthma cohorts. How these advances have led to improved management targets is also emphasised. This book brings together the clinical and scientific expertise of those from around the world who are collaborating to solve the problem of severe asthma.
