The goal of the second paper was to examine the mediating role of maternal sensitivity trajectories (36 months to 5th grade) in the association between trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms (6 months to 5th grade) and growth of children’s EF (1st to 5th grade). The results revealed that maternal sensitivity at 36 months mediated the association between low maternal depressive symptoms at 6 months and children’s planning skills, both high planning skills at 1st grade and a faster increase in EF skills from 1st grade through 5th grade. In chapter 4 findings of the third paper were presented. The aim of the third study was to investigate the transactional associations between maternal parenting (sensitivity and scaffolding) and children’s EF skills across three waves, age 3, 4, and 5. In the first autoregressive cross-lagged model, repeatedly measured constructs of maternal sensitivity, maternal scaffolding, and child inhibitory control were included. The second model included the two maternal parenting constructs and child attention flexibility. As a result, two transactional relations were found: a) between maternal sensitivity and child inhibitory control and b) between maternal scaffolding and child attention flexibility. Finally, in chapter 5 findings of the three studies are discussed with a focus on implications for enhancing children’s EF skills by creating a supportive environment.

Poverty can create stressors for parents that may increase risk for executive function difficulties. This study examined links between maternal executive function difficulties and feeding practices among families living in low income contexts and whether household food security status and child temperament moderate this association. This secondary analysis included 137 mothers of children enrolled in Head Start. Mothers completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version, the Child Feeding Questionnaire, the Feeding to Manage Child Behavior Questionnaire, the Child Behavior Questionnaire, and the USDA Food Security Module. Bivariate correlations examined associations between maternal executive function and maternal feeding practices. Hierarchical regression explored executive function's association with feeding practices, over and above other known correlates. Logistic regression was used to investigate the relationship between executive function and household food insecurity. Child temperament and household food insecurity were explored as potential moderators of the relationship between maternal executive function and maternal feeding practices. Book excerpt: Studies of mother-child interactions in free-play or teaching settings have shown that maternal responsiveness is positively associated with the development of children's executive functioning. However, because most of these studies used global ratings of maternal responsiveness, less is known about the specific aspects of responsiveness that are associated with children's executive functions during the preschool years. Given that responsiveness is not global in its efficacy, determining which aspects of responsiveness are associated with later individual differences in preschoolers' behaviors is key for moving the field forward. Due to this, the present study used molecular coding to explore the impact of maternal responsiveness during a mother-busy task on preschoolers' hot and cold executive functions at two times in development. In this study, executive functions at age six were predicted from maternal responsiveness at age four, controlling for executive functions at the first time point. One hundred and thirty eight low-income, Latina mothers of preschool children participated. When the children were 4-years-old, mothers were observed in a "mother-busy" situation where children had to wait to open a present while their mothers completed a questionnaire. All child verbal and nonverbal bids to elicit maternal attention were coded. Mother responses to child bids were coded into six categories, three that showed sufficiently high frequency for analysis: high turning toward (responses that encouraged further interaction), low turning toward (responses that acknowledged the bid, but did not encourage further interaction), and turning away (ignoring the child). After 18 months, mothers and their children returned to the laboratory to complete hot and cold executive functions measures. Multiple regressions predicting changes in hot executive functioning showed that high turning toward responses to verbal attention bids were positively associated with changes in hot executive functioning over time, whereas low turning toward responses to verbal bids and turning away responses to nonverbal bids were negatively associated with changes in executive functioning. No other relationships between parenting and children's executive functioning were significant. Implications of these findings for understanding maternal influences on the development of executive functioning in early childhood are considered.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship between the cool and hot aspects of executive function (EF) and their respective relationships with parenting practices and socio-economic status (SES). Forty six English-Chinese bilingual Singaporean preschool children aged 3 and 4 were assessed on two cool EF measures (day/night & working memory word recall), two putative hot EF measures (less is more & disappointing gift), Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (KBIT), and Peabody picture vocabulary test-revised (PPVT-IV-R). Parents also filled out a questionnaire inquiring about their SES, parental socialization goal, and parenting style. The findings showed a significant positive correlation between working memory and emotion regulation (indicated by positive expression upon receiving the disappointing gift) and regression analysis revealed that positive expression, verbal abilities, and parenting individually accounted for a significant portion of variance in working memory. Less is more score did not correlate with disappointing gift performance. Performance on day/night did not relate to the two hot EF measures or working memory. Children's performance on working memory, day/night, and disappointing gift was predicted by parental socialization goal and parenting style. Together these findings 1) support the notion that EF has separate cool and hot aspects which function differently in isolated contexts; 2) warrant future longitudinal research that investigate the interplay of these two aspects in young children's developmental process.

Book excerpt: "Several theories of cognitive control or executive function (EF) propose that EF development corresponds to children's ability to form and reflect on represented stimuli in the environment. However, research on early EF is primarily conducted with preschoolers, despite the fact that important developments in representation (e.g., language, gesture) occur within the first years of life within a social context (e.g., to share, communicate, and collaborate, see Tomasello, Carpenter, Call, Behne, & Moll, 2005). In the current study, children's EF performance and the relationship between EF and early representation (i.e., joint attention, language) were longitudinally examined in 47 children at 14 and 18 months of age. Results provided support for a unidirectional relationship in which earlier joint attention behavior at 14 months was related to better EF at 18 months. Specifically, higher level initiation of joint attention behaviors at 14 months (e.g., pointing to manipulate another's attention) were related to stronger, more cohesive EF performance at 18 months. Children's performance on EF tasks was low at 14 months and improved from 14 to 18 months. Although EF performance during this period revealed patterns dissimilar to later EF development in preschool (e.g., low inter-task correlations, few significant relations to language), by 18 months of age a subset of children consistently passed the majority of EF tasks, possibly indicating the emergence of a unified EF in the second year of life. These results provide evidence that preverbal means of representation (i.e., initiation of joint attention) are related to early EF (e.g., Zelazo, 2004). Further, early representation that emerges within a social context (e.g., to communicate information to another person) may underlie the emergence of a unified EF ability, as only children demonstrating higher-level initiation of joint attention behaviors were able to guide behavior across multiple EF contexts."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
