Book excerpt: This book is a concept-oriented treatment of the structure theory of association schemes. The generalization of Sylow’s group theoretic theorems to scheme theory arises as a consequence of arithmetical considerations about quotient schemes. The theory of Coxeter schemes (equivalent to the theory of buildings) emerges naturally and yields a purely algebraic proof of Tits’ main theorem on buildings of spherical type.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Association schemes are of interest to both mathematicians and statisticians and this book was written with both audiences in mind. For statisticians, it shows how to construct designs for experiments in blocks, how to compare such designs, and how to analyse data from them. The reader is only assumed to know very basic abstract algebra. For pure mathematicians, it tells why association schemes are important and develops the theory to the level of advanced research. This book arose from a course successfully taught by the author and as such the material is thoroughly class-tested. There are a great number of examples and exercises that will increase the book's appeal to both graduate students and their instructors. It is ideal for those coming either from pure mathematics or statistics backgrounds who wish to develop their understanding of association schemes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents papers related to the DIMACS workshop, "Codes and Association Schemes". The articles are devoted to the following topics: applications of association schemes and of the polynomial method to properties of codes, structural results for codes, structural results for association schemes, and properties of orthogonal polynomials and their applications in combinatorics. Papers on coding theory are related to classical topics, such as perfect codes, bounds on codes, codes and combinatorial arrays, weight enumerators, and spherical designs. Papers on orthogonal polynomials provide new results on zeros and symptotic properties of standard families of polynomials encountered in coding theory. The theme of association schemes is represented by new classification results and new classes of schemes related to posets. This volume collects up-to-date applications of the theory of association schemes to coding and presents new properties of both polynomial and general association schemes. It offers a solid representation of results in problems in areas of current interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary object of the lecture notes is to develop a treatment of association schemes analogous to that which has been so successful in the theory of finite groups. The main chapters are decomposition theory, representation theory, and the theory of generators. Tits buildings come into play when the theory of generators is developed. Here, the buildings play the role which, in group theory, is played by the Coxeter groups. - The text is intended for students as well as for researchers in algebra, in particular in algebraic combinatorics.

Book excerpt: This series is devoted to the publication of high-level monographs which cover the whole spectrum of current discrete mathematics and its applications in various fields. One of its main objectives is to make available to the professional community expositions of results and foundations of methods that play an important role in both the theory and applications of discrete mathematics. Contributions which are on the borderline of discrete mathematics and related fields and which stimulate further research at the crossroads of these areas are particularly welcome.

Book excerpt: Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early-1980s, the ten million people of retirement age in the UK figured prominently among the disadvantaged and deprived. They were heavily over-represented in sub-standard housing and among those in most need of support from the personal social services. One form of social provision which gained rapidly in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s was sheltered housing. It was seen to combine housing with care; provided support while fostering independence; and gave scope for flexibility and experimentation in adapting schemes to local circumstances. By the late 1970s hundreds of schemes were administered, and they were occupied by half a million elderly tenants. Sheltered housing was called ‘the greatest breakthrough in the housing scene since the war’. Extravagant expectations were aroused, and sheltered housing was regarded by some as the solution to all manner of complex problems. Taking the country as a whole, however, relatively little was known about the numbers of schemes and where they were located; who owned them and how they were managed; the aims and assumptions of those who provided or advocated sheltered housing; how the schemes functioned and whether they achieved what they were set up to do; the role, experience and attitudes of wardens; what kinds of people lived in sheltered housing, their history, and how they became tenants; their assessment of the scheme; and much else. The Leeds study, on which this book is based, originally published in 1983, was the most comprehensive and detailed to have been conducted into sheltered housing. It evoked widespread interest in Britain and abroad at the time. It sought to answer some of the important questions about the growth and proliferation of sheltered housing, to evaluate sheltered housing from different points of view – including those of tenants, and to consider the scope for future development. While sheltered housing is the focal topic of the book it should be viewed in the broader context of social policy, administration, professional practice and client experience. The book describes in detail an innovatory and evolving form of social provision and, in doing so, illuminates the operation and impact of policy in action at several levels – from the policy-maker to the consumer, from the organisation of policy to its object. There was significant evidence from the study that many tenants were provided with a service which was not the one they sought, or even needed, but they were given what the agency happened to have – or made – available. Among other topics, the book examines sheltered housing as a response to, or reflection of, myths and prejudices about ageing. It discusses whether elderly people should be compelled to move from familiar surroundings late in life – and how they cope when they do move. The usefulness or otherwise of alarm systems is assessed – with conclusions that throw considerable doubt on their value or reliability. The evolution and modifications taking place in sheltered housing are reported on and the scope for future initiatives is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spon's Architects' and Builders' Price Book 2004 is the most detailed, professionally relevant source of construction price information currently available anywhere. With competition growing fiercer throughout the industry and with increasing pressure to obtain a 'competitive advantage', the A and B's unique tender index will be more valuable than ever before. This is the only price book that publishes details of its cost base in such a way that it can be adjusted to allow for market conditions that affect building prices. A separate minor works section on coloured paper covers contracts of around £65,000 in value. The A and B comes with a 'free' CDROM that enables the reader to view the entire book on screen, cut and paste prices into other tender documents, export to other major packages, perform simple calculations, index search, produce estimate and tender documents and adjust rates and data. This complete package now means that Spon's Architects' and Builders' Price Book 2004 is now better than ever and is a resource that no building firm, surveyor or architect should be without. New features in this 129th edition include: an easier-to-read format; information on, and incorporating, the new CICJ three year wage agreement, effective from Monday, 30th June 2003. It also includes additional items for: hot and cold water piping systems; additional building boards and external wall cladding; further aluminium systems curtain walling; western red cedar external wall cladding; fire retardant steel beams; metal and glazed balustrading; sarnafil roofing and acoustic sliding partitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly expanding area of algebraic graph theory uses two different branches of algebra to explore various aspects of graph theory: linear algebra (for spectral theory) and group theory (for studying graph symmetry). These areas have links with other areas of mathematics, such as logic and harmonic analysis, and are increasingly being used in such areas as computer networks where symmetry is an important feature. Other books cover portions of this material, but this book is unusual in covering both of these aspects and there are no other books with such a wide scope. Peter J. Cameron, internationally recognized for his substantial contributions to the area, served as academic consultant for this volume, and the result is ten expository chapters written by acknowledged international experts in the field. Their well-written contributions have been carefully edited to enhance readability and to standardize the chapter structure, terminology and notation throughout the book. To help the reader, there is an extensive introductory chapter that covers the basic background material in graph theory, linear algebra and group theory. Each chapter concludes with an extensive list of references.
