Book excerpt: A) Introduction: It is generally held, that the business enterprises should act in environmentally responsible way. The issue of the impact of environmentally friendly behavior of business on its financial performance (CFP) still remains unresolved. Based on the context of developed countries, different studies show contradictory results about the utility of corporate environmental performance (CEP) with respect to the firm value. However, study in the developing country context, particularly on the Asian region is scanty. Therefore, the present study seeks to re-examine the relationship between the CEP and firm value of some selected Asian companies over the periods.b) Method: An empirical study with multiple linear regression models has been made to find out the relationship between CEP and firm value (in terms of market value) of 85 companies from Indian, China, Korea and Japan, on the basis of financial and non-financial reports from the periods 2010 to 2012.c) Results: The results show that the CEP has positive relationship with the change in the market value of the high CEP firm. Significant relationship is also found between actual CEP (in terms of 'quantitative' disclosure) and firm's market value. It is also found that the change in the firm value has positive correlation with such CEPs, which appear to have improved over the previous year. And, these results differ between companies from developed and developing countries.d) Discussion: The study brings out that a positive relationship exists between the CEP and CFP among the selected Asian companies. The result may motivate the companies from the developing regions to achieve a better state of CEP. A study with larger sample for longer period of time may provide better results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the increased social and environmental problems in China, this book looks into the social and environmental (environmental) disclosure practices of socially responsible Chinese listed firms by constructing a stakeholder-driven, three-dimensional, disclosure index. The book contains a three-part study: the first part explores the current status of social and environment disclosure practices. The second part empirically examines the relationship between corporate social and environmental disclosure and various influencing factors (i.e. stakeholders’ power and corporate characteristics). The third part empirically examines the link between corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting (i.e. publishing a CSR report and the quality of the CSR report) and socially responsible reputation. The book finds that the CSR report provided more stakeholder-relevant social and environmental disclosure than the annual report. It also finds that corporate characteristics such as firm size, profitability and industry classification are all statistically significant factors influencing social and environmental disclosure of the Chinese firms studied. Shareholders significantly influenced firms’ social and environmental disclosure, and creditors significantly influenced firms’ disclosure related to their environmental performance. The final part of the study reports that publishing a CSR report and CSR reporting quality had a positive influence on firms’ socially responsible reputation and that the CEO/chairman duality negatively influenced firms’ socially responsible reputation. The book also highlights that financial performance and firm size were the two corporate characteristics that had a positive influence on corporate socially responsible reputation. This book will be of interest to those who are keen to learn more about corporate social responsibilities in the context of Chinese firms.

Book excerpt: The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is observed as base point of compatible responsible business in the commencement of 20th century. There is a long term debate prevailing to outline the proper definition of CSR because the contents of CSR have different exposes and standards. To examine the linkage between CEP (Corporate Environmental Performance) and CFP (Corporate Financial Performance) have gained much attention under sustainability management in CSR outfit. Because previous efforts proclaimed inconsistent results due to dominant assumptions of studies. But the growing awareness on this matter is in a macro level. The current study attempts to present the corporations' relationship between environmental and financial performance to explore the CSR outfit in a developed nation. This case derives observing data from corporate sustainability reports or integrated annual reports in Japan. The sample is comprised of a total of 85 Japanese corporations observing data from year 2008 to 2014. The selected firms are listed in Tokyo Stock Exchange in the first section in the market division and categorized in various industrial sectors. The effort of current study revealed that corporate environmental measurements have different effects on financial performance. The evidence was less strong to evaluate the impact level of each variable but some results showed that positive link existed among selected variables. Few results were evident to reject the null hypothesis while articulating that there is a positive relationship between CEP and CFP, i.e. in the CFP dependent variable ROA (Return on Assets) shows positive linkage between particular independent variables; (GHG (CO2)) and Waste Discharge (WD). The findings of the study can suggest in company perspective to place more intent on purpose of CSR and for the academics' perspective to confront the confined observations.

Book excerpt: Purpose: This paper outlines the impact that energy companies exert on the environment and the subsequent effect on financial performance of the energy companies. A major plank of this paper is whether the Kyoto protocol of which New Zealand is a signatory and Australia who is not a signatory have an impact on the environmental performance and outcomes of the energy companies. Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper adopts a content analysis of financial statements of selected energy company annual reports. The analysis examines financial and sustainability reports where available from a period of 1996-2006. This paper follows a quantitative paradigm. Findings: The analysis indicates that there is a distinct correlation between the environmental performance of the energy company and subsequent financial performance, pursuant to H1. It was found that the descriptive, multivariate and clustering statistics show that good economic performance does not drive the environmental performance of a company, but certainly has an effect on it, pursuant to H2. It was found that the descriptive, multivariate and clustering statistics show that the ratification of international regulations (such as Kyoto Protocol) does not make any difference in environmental performance between regulation ratified and non-ratified countries, pursuant to H3. Originality/Value: This paper it is anticipated will be a valuable tool to researchers, students and practitioners' who are seeking insight and verification that there is direct benefit to those energy companies that are socially responsible and are committed to environment improvements and change.

Book excerpt: Despite a recent surge of empirical studies examining associations between corporate environmental performance and financial performance, researchers have been unable to give an integrated account of the mechanisms that link the two. The practical implications of this research stream thus remain limited, offering managers little guidance in their efforts to improve environmental and financial performance. This study of the U.S. chemical industry addresses that gap by analyzing how firms' environmental management practices and resulting environmental performance may be related to their financial performance, illuminating the type and scope of relevant environmental practices conducted at the plant level of firms. Drawing on detailed environmental information about 18,743 chemical plants and financial information about their 455 parent firms, we investigate the plants' pollution prevention activities (PPAs) and their broader impacts on environmental performance and financial outcomes in terms of cost competitiveness and market valuation. The results reveal that more-intensive PPAs are associated with both superior environmental performance and improved cost competitiveness, but do not necessarily lead to higher market valuation. The study also establishes that proactive PPAs implemented to improve environmental performance at the plant level are associated with cost competitiveness when those practices directly improve existing production processes and the selected financial measurement is well suited to capture such improvements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable development will not happen without substantial contributions from and leading roles of companies and business organizations. This requires the provision of adequate information on corporate social and ecological impacts and performance. For the last decade, progress has been made in developing and adapting accounting mechanisms to these needs but significant work is still needed to tackle the problems associated with conventional accounting. Until recently, research on environmental management accounting (EMA) has concentrated on developed countries and on cost–benefit analysis of implementing individual EMA tools. Using a comparative case study design, this book seeks to redress the balance and improve the understanding of EMA in management decision-making in emerging countries, focussing specifically on South-East Asian companies. Drawing on 12 case studies, taken from a variety of industries, Environmental Management Accounting: Case Studies of South-East Asian Companies explores the relationship between decision situations and the motivation for, and barriers to, the application of clusters of EMA tools as well as the implementation process itself. This book will be useful to scholars interested in the environmental and sustainability management accounting research field and those considering specific approaches to EMA within emerging economies.

In turn, the book addresses a number of moral questions in connection with taxes, concerning such topics as: • the nature of government • the relation between government (the state) and its subjects or citizens • the moral justification of taxes• the link between property and taxation• tax planning, evasion and avoidance • corporate social responsibility• the use of coercive power in collecting taxes and enforcing tax laws • ethical standards for tax advisors • tax payer rights • the balance between individual rights to liberty and privacy, and government compliance and information requirements • the moral justification underlying the efforts of legislators and policymakers to restructure society and steer individual and corporate behavior.

Book excerpt: Many business managers start to adopt environmental-friendly activities due to pressures and concerns regarding the potential adverse environmental impacts from their regular activities. However, there is no consensus regarding whether better environmental performance can lead to superior financial performance. Academic research also shows mixed or even contradictory results, possibly due to various limitations and problems. This study builds a multilevel framework to study the complicated relationship between environmental performance and financial return and synthesize those non-consensus results in many previous studies. An overall positive relationship is found between environmental and financial performance with variations across companies and industries due to the company- and industry-level heterogeneities. A negative relationship is also identified for some firms in specific industry sectors. Moreover, the bi-directional causal relationship between environmental and financial performance also imply that it is necessary for companies to have sufficient financial resources in order to implement proactive environmental strategies and initiatives. The findings in this study make contributions to the literature, provide guidelines for managers and investors, and give implications for policymakers.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This is a longitudinal study using KLD, EPA TRI and Compustat data to address several questions about the relationships between corporate environmental strategy, financial performance, and environmental performance in a sample of companies operating in the so-called "dirty" industries in the USA from 1991 to 2005.There have been numerous publications on sustainability over the last 35 years, but there is a dearth of research providing evidence in support of the theories and views advanced. The literature has focused on two issues: the relationship between corporate environmental strategy (ES) and environmental performance (EP) and the relationship between environmental performance and financial performance (FP). The preliminary research described in Chapter 2 of this dissertation explores several fundamental research questions. Building on this exploratory work are three chapters, each being a more tightly focused and rigorous study of several quite specific research questions: Chapter 3 deals with caveats for researchers using KLD data; Chapter 4 explores the relationship between corporate ES and EP in light of advances made in Chapter 3; and Chapter 5 deals with heterogeneity in the ES-EP-FP-Slack system. Chapter 6 summarizes the findings of both the preliminary and principal research and outlines future research possibilities.
