Book excerpt: An analysis of the Higgs boson produced in association with a $Z$ boson, with the Higgs decaying to $WW^\ast$ and the $W$ and $Z$ bosons decaying leptonically -- i.e. the $ZH \rightarrow ZWW^\ast \rightarrow \ell\ell\ell\nu\ell\nu$ process -- is presented, using the combined 2015 and 2016 datasets from the ATLAS experiment, totalling 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data from $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. Control region normalisation and a data-driven technique are employed alongside Monte Carlo estimation to predict the number of signal and background events. A cut-based approach is used to discriminate signal events from background, with cut values optimised to maximise expected significance. A statistical fit of the data, including thorough treatment of sources of systematic uncertainty, is performed, yielding a signal strength of $\mu_{ZH} = 3.0^{+1.9}_{-1.4}$, where the Standard Model prediction is $\mu_{ZH} = 1$.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery in 2012 of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) represents a milestone for the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Most of the SM Higgs production and decay rates have been measured at the LHC with increased precision. However, despite its experimental success, the SM is known to be only an effective manifestation of a more fundamental description of nature. The scientific research at the LHC is strongly focused on extending the SM by searching, directly or indirectly, for indications of New Physics. The extensive physics program requires increasingly advanced computational and algorithmic techniques. In the last decades, Machine Learning (ML) methods have made a prominent appearance in the field of particle physics, and promise to address many challenges faced by the LHC. This thesis presents the analysis that led to the observation of the SM Higgs boson decay into pairs of bottom quarks. The analysis exploits the production of a Higgs boson associated with a vector boson whose signatures enable efficient triggering and powerful background reduction. The main strategy to maximise the signal sensitivity is based on a multivariate approach. The analysis is performed on a dataset corresponding to a luminosity of 79.8/fb collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run-2 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. An excess of events over the expected background is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.9 (4.3) standard deviation. A combination with results from other \Hbb searches provides an observed (expected) significance of 5.4 (5.5). The corresponding ratio between the signal yield and the SM expectation is 1.01 +- 0.12 (stat.)+ 0.16-0.15(syst.). The 'observation' analysis was further extended to provide a finer interpretation of the V H(H → bb) signal measurement. The cross sections for the VH production times the H → bb branching ratio have been measured in exclusive regions of phase space. These measurements are used to search for possible deviations from the SM with an effective field theory approach, based on anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson. The results of the cross-section measurements, as well as the constraining of the operators that affect the couplings of the Higgs boson to the vector boson and the bottom quarks, have been documented and discussed in this thesis. This thesis also describes a novel technique for the fast simulation of the forward calorimeter response, based on similarity search methods. Such techniques constitute a branch of ML and include clustering and indexing methods that enable quick and efficient searches for vectors similar to each other. The new simulation approach provides optimal results in terms of detector resolution response and reduces the computational requirements of a standard particles simulation.

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern high-energy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential cross-section of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new front-end electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new front-end in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpolation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production cross-sections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of the Higgs boson associated with a pair of top quarks is one of the most important Higgs boson production modes yet still not observed. Therefore, its discovery is one of the most challenging searches after the Higgs discovery: not only will it be the first time we can observe this Higgs production mode but also we will be able to measure its Yukawa coupling to the top quark. The measured results can answer the basic question of the Standard Model (SM) and can also search for any hints of new physics beyond the SM prediction. An analysis searching for the production of the Higgs boson associated with a pair of top quarks in three leptons final states is presented in this thesis. It is performed with the data collected by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016 during the so-called « Run 2 » campaign corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV. It uses a boosted decision tree algorithm to discriminate between signal and background. The dominant background of fake leptons is estimated with the data-driven matrix method (Matrix Method). For a 125 GeV Standard Model Higgs boson, an excess of events over the expected background from other SM processes is found with an observed significance of 2.2 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 1.5 standard deviations. The best fit for the ̄ttH production cross section is 1.5+0⋅8−0⋅7 times the SM expectation, consistent with the SM value of the Yukawa coupling to top quarks.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we report the result on the search for the Standard Model(SM) Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W in the full leptonic final state using data collected by CMS detector at LHC at 7 and 8 TeV. The integrated luminosity is 4.9 /fb−1 and 19.5 /fb−1 at 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The SM Higgs hypothesis is excluded at CLs=95 % in mH = 128 - 600 GeV. An excess of data is ob- served around mH = 125 GeV which corresponds to significance of 4.0[sigma] on the background-only hypothesis. The measured production rate normalized to the SM prediction is 0.76 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.16(syst.). A hypothesis test on the spin-parity nature of the new boson shows that data prefers SM Higgs boson to the graviton- like spin-2 model or spin-0 pseudo-scalar model.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATLAS is one of the two main experiments at LHC with the purpose of investigating the microscopic properties of matter to address the most fundamental questions of particle physics. After the achievements of the first years of running, the potential reach for new discoveries and precise measurements at LHC is being extended by pushing further the energy and luminosity frontiers through three upgrades of the accelerator culminating in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To fully profit from the increased luminosity, two main upgrades of the ATLAS inner detector are planned. The first upgrade was already completed at the beginning of 2015 with the insertion of the IBL, a fourth pixel layer located at just 3.2 cm from the beam line. In the second major upgrade, foreseen for 2024, the full inner detector will be replaced by a completely new inner tracker fully made of silicon devices to cope with the high particle density and the harsh radiation environment at the HL-LHC, which during its operational period will deliver 3000 fb-1, almost ten times the integrated luminosity of the full LHC program. This thesis addresses the study of new n+-in-p active edge pixel detectors by developing two novel doping profile analysis methods to study the radiation damage effects on the pixel detectors performance. These methods are the 3D sims imaging method and the TLM Method. TCAD simulation has been used to simulate the doping profiles, the electrical behavior and the radiation damage. Validating the simulation models with data have been done. Moreover, clean-room characterization, as well as testbeam measurement have been performed to test the different detector designs. In the second part of the thesis, I discuss the observation of the standard model Higgs boson bb decay mode using the data collected by ATLAS during the LHC Run2 at center-of-mass energy 13 TeV and an integrated luminosity 79.8 fb−1 of a proton-proton collision. I contributed specifically to the search of the standard model Higgs boson in VH(bb) production mode. In the VH(bb) analysis we don't have any channel that considers the tau leptons in the final state. I have performed a feasibility study to verify the gain of using the taus in the analysis. In addition, for the VH(bb) analysis I have worked on the multi-jet background estimation in the 1-lepton channel using the dijet-mass analysis method.

Book excerpt: Discovery of unexpected properties of the Higgs boson offers an intriguing opportunity of shedding light on some of the most profound puzzles in particle physics. The Beyond Standard Model (BSM) decays of the Higgs boson could reveal new physics in a direct manner. Future electron-positron lepton colliders operating as Higgs factories, including CEPC, FCC-ee and ILC, with the advantages of a clean collider environment and large statistics, could greatly enhance the sensitivity in searching for these BSM decays. In this work, we perform a general study of Higgs exotic decays at future $e^+e^-$ lepton colliders, focusing on the Higgs decays with hadronic final states and/or missing energy, which are very challenging for the High-Luminosity program of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). We show that with simple selection cuts, $O(10^{-3}\sim10^{-5})$ limits on the Higgs exotic decay branching fractions can be achieved using the leptonic decaying spectator $Z$ boson in the associated production mode $e^+e^-\rightarrow Z H$. We further discuss the interplay between the detector performance and Higgs exotic decay, and other possibilities of exotic decays. Our work is a first step in a comprehensive study of Higgs exotic decays at future lepton colliders, which is a key ingredient of Higgs physics that deserves further investigation.
