Book Synopsis Creation and the Environment by : Calvin Redekop
Download or read book Creation and the Environment written by Calvin Redekop and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a shift in the belief that a religious world-view, specifically a Christian one, precludes a commitment to environmentalism. Whether as "stewards of God's creation" or champions of "environmental justice," church members have increasingly found that a strong pro-ecology stand on environmental issues is an integral component of their faith. But not all Christian denominations are latecomers to the issue of environmentalism. In Creation and the EnvironmentCalvin W. Redekop and his co-authors explain the unique environmental position of the Anabaptists, in particular the Mennonites. After a brief survey of the major forces contributing to the word's present ecological crisis, Creation and the Environment explores the uniquely Anabaptist view of our relationship to what they see as the created order. In rural Amish and Mennonite communities, they explain, the environment—especially the "land"—is considered part of the Kingdom God plans to establish on earth. In this view, the creation is part of the divine order, with the redemption of humankind inextricably linked to the redemption and restoration of the material world. The well-being a purpose of creation and human history are thus seen as completely interdependent. Book Synopsis T&T Clark Handbook of Christian Theology and Climate Change by : Hilda P. Koster
Download or read book T&T Clark Handbook of Christian Theology and Climate Change written by Hilda P. Koster and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The T&T Clark Handbook of Christian Theology and Climate Change entails a wide-ranging conversation between Christian theology and various other discourses on climate change. Given the far-reaching complicity of "North Atlantic Christianity" in anthropogenic climate change, the question is whether it can still collaborate with and contribute to ongoing mitigation and adaptation efforts. The main essays in this volume are written by leading scholars from within North Atlantic Christianity and addressed primarily to readers in the same context; these essays are critically engaged by respondents situated in other geographic regions, minority communities, non-Christian traditions, or non-theological disciplines. Structured in seven main parts, the handbook explores: 1) the need for collaboration with disciplines outside of Christian theology to address climate change; 2) the need to find common moral ground for such collaboration; 3) the difficulties posed by collaborating with other Christian traditions from within; 4) the questions that emerge from such collaboration for understanding the story of God's work; and 5) God's identity and character; 6) the implications of such collaboration for ecclesial praxis; and 7) concluding reflections examining whether this volume does justice to issues of race, gender, class, other animals, religious diversity, geographical divides and carbon mitigation. This rich ecumenical, cross-cultural conversation provides a comprehensive and in-depth engagement with the theological and moral challenges raised by anthropogenic climate change.
Book Synopsis The Old Testament Roots of Nonviolence by : Philip E. Friesen
Download or read book The Old Testament Roots of Nonviolence written by Philip E. Friesen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament Roots of Nonviolence brings together a number of issues, showing how they fit together in one exciting story. These issues are: 1. War and Peace 2. The Great Commission (being missional) 3. Social justice and social change over time in the biblical setting This book reveals the continuity of the Old and New Testaments in the development of these three major themes over millenniums of time in the unfolding biblical story of God's creation, tough love, and redemption of the social order. It presents biblical faith as a providentially guided process in the community of faith resulting in global social change that can be observed and described as yeast in bread or seeds in soil as Jesus taught.
Book Synopsis Things Hold Together by : Branson L. Parler
Download or read book Things Hold Together written by Branson L. Parler and published by MennoMedia, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an Anabaptist, John Howard Yoder is often depicted as Christ-centered in his theology but with a creation-deficient approach to culture. In this clearly reasoned study, Branson Parler argues that Yoder advocates a trinitarian theology of culture that upholds the continuity between God’s work in creation and in redemption. For Yoder, Jesus’ humanity makes him directly relevant to culture while Jesus’ divinity connects him directly to creation. Yoder’s writings, says Parler, affirm that Jesus restores and re-establishes the politics of creation. In Things Hold Together, Parler joins a growing number of writers from outside Anabaptist or Mennonite traditions who are finding resonance with Yoder, one of the leading theologians of the twentieth century. “Interpreters who dismiss Yoder’s call to discipleship find comfort in suggesting he lacked a doctrine of creation or in finding him to be at best a heterodox theologian. Parler takes the ground away from such critics. His book sets the bar for any future reception of Yoder's theology.”—D. Stephen Long, author of Speaking of God: Theology, Truth and Language "Things Hold Together helps us see that John Howard Yoder was from first to last a trinitarian thinker. Parler therefore provides an illuminating context for interpreting Yoder's critique of H. Richard Niebuhr." —Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe professor of theological ethics, Duke University
Download or read book Animaladies written by Lori Gruen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do depictions of crazy cat ladies obscure more sinister structural violence against animals hoarded in factory farms? Highlighting the frequent pathologization of animal lovers and animal rights activists, this book examines how the “madness” of our relationships with animals intersects with the “madness” of taking animals seriously. The essays collected in this volume argue that “animaladies” are expressive of political and psychological discontent, and the characterization of animal advocacy as mad or “crazy” distracts attention from broader social unease regarding human exploitation of animal life. While allusions to madness are both subtle and overt, they are also very often gendered, thought to be overly sentimental with an added sense that emotions are being directed at the wrong species. Animaladies are obstacles for the political uptake of interest in animal issues-as the intersections between this volume and established feminist scholarship show, the fear of being labeled unreasonable or mad still has political currency.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Yahweh by : John C. Nugent
Download or read book The Politics of Yahweh written by John C. Nugent and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Howard Yoder is most famous for arguing in The Politics of Jesus that a sound reading of the New Testament demonstrates the abiding relevance of Jesus to social ethics. However, it is seldom acknowledged that Yoder makes essentially the same argument with regard to the Old Testament. Throughout his extensive writings, Yoder offers a provocative interpretation of the Old Testament that culminates in the way of Jesus and establishes the ethical, ecclesiological, and historiographical continuity of the entire biblical canon. In The Politics of Yahweh, presented as a prequel to The Politics of Jesus, John C. Nugent makes Yoder's complete Old Testament interpretation accessible in one place for the first time. Nugent does not view Yoder's interpretation as flawless. Rather, Nugent moves beyond summary to offer honest critique and substantial revision. His constructive proposal, which stands in fundamental continuity with the work of Yoder, is likely to provoke thought from theologians, biblical scholars, and ethicists. Even at points where readers disagree with some of his and Yoder's interpretations, they will be challenged to explore new perspectives and rethink common assumptions concerning the diverse and often confusing issues that arise from sustained reflection on the Old Testament.

Book Synopsis Transforming Enterprise? by : Andrew Yancey
Download or read book Transforming Enterprise? written by Andrew Yancey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does Christian faith integrate with capitalism? This question has been at the heart of Christian ethics for more than three hundred years, but rarely as complex and important as now. The polarizing influence of consumer capitalism has extended into virtually every domain of human life. On the one hand, capitalism has contributed to increases in standards of living and life expectancy, especially among those in extreme poverty. On the other, it has exacerbated income inequality, environmental damages, and social displacement. For contemporary American evangelical theology, this is problematic. It has long been on a quest to show that Christian faith harmonizes with capitalistic enterprise. But can faith harness the transformational power of consumer capitalism without being affected by its excesses? For many, the election of Donald Trump as president has revealed a great divide within American evangelicalism about the links between Christianity, economic power, and moral character. Working from the field of academic practical theology in interdisciplinary dialogue with business management ethics, Transforming Enterprise? shows why and how a reframing of the relationship between Christian faith and capitalistic enterprise is needed in the contemporary postsecular milieu.
