Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for residential communities for seniors rises as the U.S. population continues to age. This growth means that new administrators and staff members often are learning by trial and error the complicated task of delivering high-quality and consistent services to elderly persons. While many new facilities have been successful, others have been plagued by a variety of administrative and financial difficulties. Senior Living Communities remains the definitive guide to managing these facilities. In this thoroughly updated and revised edition, Benjamin W. Pearce offers a wealth of sound advice and practical solutions. He discusses resident relations, operating methods, staffing ratios, department management, cost containment, sales and marketing strategies, techniques of financial analysis, budgeting, and human resources. New chapters address issues particular to dementia care and architecture, and the appendix contains a department-by-department audit of senior living operations. From the front lines to the boardroom, this book should be a part of every decision-making process for improving and maintaining assisted living, congregate, and continuing care retirement communities.

The study examines the factors associated with life quality for persons living on their own in the local community, as well as those in various housing arrangements such as a continuing care retirement facility, adult home, income-subsidized housing, and senior apartments. Topics include plans and adjustment to moving; role identities; social relationships, participation, and integration; health and activity patterns; and coping with life events.

Book excerpt: It is important to understand if institutionalized, senior living establishments are providing adequate, home-like environments for older adults. The researcher surveyed older residents with the Concept of Home instrument developed in 1991 for older women in private dwellings. The study examined the validity of the instrument's use with present-day respondents, both men and women, residing in assisted and independent living facilities in the Houston, Texas area. The study concluded that overall, individuals in both settings viewed home similarly; however, by gender, men and women comprehended the Concept of Home somewhat differently. The 1991 instrument was found to be useful with current older adults and with those living in retirement communities rather than private dwellings. Most establishments provided satisfactory accommodations, but additional amenities will be required as the Baby Boomer generation moves into institutionalized housing. The researcher recommended further investigation of men and their perspective of home.
