Book excerpt: Remote sensing technologies are being applied to a variety of uses because of the increase in access to various products (digital sensors, UAVs, software) and its ability to model relatively large areas in a short amount of time. While these new technologies are beginning to be adopted, validation of their merit in floodplain terrain mapping is lacking. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the vertical accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs) generated with UAV-based LiDAR and Structure from Motion (SfM), also known as photographic LiDAR or PhoDAR. Airborne (manned aircraft) LiDAR has been applied to river research in several applications and is common in many fields such as mining, archeology and surveying. SfM has been used to create digital surface models (DSMs) and DEMs of river systems and their associated riparian areas. Given the foundational difference between LiDAR and SfM technologies, the effects of vegetation on the floodplain landscape required a systematic evaluation to determine which techniques are appropriate for floodplain terrain mapping. We collected remotely sensed data from UAV LiDAR and SfM methods at four field sites located within the interior Columbia Basin and analyzed the resulting point clouds and DEMs to determine their vertical accuracy by comparing their elevations with ground surveyed data (checkpoints) throughout the study areas. Both LiDAR and SfM point clouds were filtered and the remaining ground points were compared to surveyed elevations both in their raw form and interpolated DEMs to assess their vertical accuracy. The results show that in vegetated ground cover, LiDAR point clouds were able to produce higher accuracy returns and a resulting higher accuracy DEM than SfM results. In non-vegetated areas, the accuracies between SfM and LiDAR returns are closer but still show higher accuracy from LiDAR point clouds. Ground filtering is shown to be a limitation on DEM vertical accuracy because of the inclusion of non-ground points in the filtering process. This limitation impacts the vertical accuracy of both LiDAR and SfM interpolated DEMs in floodplain habitats.

The emergence of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) controlled navigation and sensor-carrying capabilities has increased the number of publications related to new remote sensing from much closer distances. Previous knowledge about the behavior of the Earth's surface under the incidence different wavelengths of energy has been successfully applied to a large amount of data recorded from UAVs, thereby increasing the special and temporal resolution of the products obtained. More specifically, the ability of UAVs to be positioned in the air at pre-programmed coordinate points; to track flight paths; and in any case, to record the coordinates of the sensor position at the time of the shot and at the pitch, yaw, and roll angles have opened an interesting field of applications for low-altitude aerial photogrammetry, known as UAV photogrammetry. In addition, photogrammetric data processing has been improved thanks to the combination of new algorithms, e.g., structure from motion (SfM), which solves the collinearity equations without the need for any control point, producing a cloud of points referenced to an arbitrary coordinate system and a full camera calibration, and the multi-view stereopsis (MVS) algorithm, which applies an expanding procedure of sparse set of matched keypoints in order to obtain a dense point cloud. The set of technical advances described above allows for geometric modeling of terrain surfaces with high accuracy, minimizing the need for topographic campaigns for georeferencing of such products. This Special Issue aims to compile some applications realized thanks to the synergies established between new remote sensing from close distances and UAV photogrammetry.

In this thesis a method is presented using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with a GoPro digital camera to collect photogrammetric data of a 2.02-acre riparian restoration. A three-dimensional point cloud was created from the photos using Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques. The point cloud was analyzed and compared to traditional, ground-based monitoring techniques. Ground truth data collected using the status-quo approach was collected on 6.3% of the study site and averaged across the entire site to report stem heights in stems/acre in three height classes, 0-3 feet, 3-7 feet, and greater than 7 feet. The project site was divided into four analysis sections, one for derivation of parameters used in the UAV data analysis, and the remaining three sections reserved for method validation. The most conservative of several methods tested comparing the ground truth data to the UAV generated data produced an overall error of 21.6% and indicated an r2 value of 0.98. A Bland Altman analysis indicated a 99% probability that the UAV stems/plot result will be within 159 stems/plot of the ground truth data. The ground truth data is reported with an 80% confidence interval of +/- 844 stems/plot, thus the UAV was able to estimate stems well within this confidence interval. Further research is required to validate this method longitudinally at this same site and across varying ecologies. These results suggest that UAV derived environmental impact assessments at riparian restoration sites may offer competitive performance and value.

More temporally and economically efficient data collected at a finer spatial resolution and greater spatial extent will increase the effectiveness of management plans and risk assessment for LW by providing decision-makers with a complete picture of the river. Contemporary practices are too inefficient in time and labor for large-scale monitoring of fluvial LW with anything more than the most general management or risk assessment in mind. The paradigm of river research, the river continuum concept (RCC), where a river's traits are interpolated between discrete study areas, has shifted to a nested hierarchical structure (Woodget et al., 2017). The nested hierarchical structure paradigm demands higher temporal and spatial resolution combined with greater spatial extent for LW data, as called for in Zorn et al. (2018). This study revealed UAS-SfM as a plausible option for creating data products capable of enhancing LW monitoring and risk assessment. Orthomosaics of a higher resolution (2.34cm/pixel) than those available via commercially available imagery and a 3D point cloud were both useful for general identification of LW, but both were subject to noise and errors. The sources of the noise and errors were the camera angles used during image collection, overhanging vegetation, and deep water. Changes to data collection techniques can alleviate these issues.
