Book excerpt: The degree of hydrogen embrittlement produced in high-strength 4340 steel by various cadmium, cadmium-titanium, and nickel plating-and-baking procedures is assessed from fracture stress values obtained during slow strain rate tests using notched tension specimens. At low crosshead displacement rates, the slow strain rate method is capable of quantifying the degree of embrittlement produced by a variety of low-embrittlement, plating-and-baking procedures and is more sensitive than conventional test methods defined in standard specifications. The advantages of using a slow strain rate method as a viable alternative to existing standard methods for assessment of the degree of hydrogen embrittlement in plated-and-baked, high-strength steel are discussed.

Book excerpt: The present work demonstrates how a slow strain rate test can be used to quantify rapidly the severity of hydrogen embrittlement produced in porous cadmium plated-and-baked high-strength 4340 steel by paint strippers. The results of multiple slow strain rate tests, conducted at a crosshead displacement rate of 2 x 10-4 mm/s using notched tension specimens in various paint strippers, show that a minimum mean fracture stress within the range of 1700 to 1850 MN/m2 can be correlated with the pass/fail criterion for acceptability of paint strippers in standard notched C-ring tests. The advantages of using a slow strain rate test as a viable alternative to existing standard methods for hydrogen embrittlement testing are discussed.

Book excerpt: Slow strain rate testing has been used to quantify the degree of hydrogen embrittlement produced in high strength 4340 steel by plating processes and aircraft maintenance chemicals. The results of slow strain rate tests, conducted at a crosshead displacement rate of 2 x 0.0001 mm/s using samples of three notched tension specimens in various paint strippers, show that a mean fracture stress of 1850 MPa can be correlated with the pass/fail criterion for acceptability of paint strippers in an existing Standard Notched C-ring Test. Statistical analysis of the slow strain rate data allows criteria to be established which will ensure a 99% probability of identifying all paint strippers that fail the Notched C-ring Test. This analysis is also used to grade a series of products and processes in terms of their tendency to cause hydrogen embrittlement, and to identify environmental parameters that cause excessive scatter in hydrogen embrittlement tests. Criteria are also specified for acceptability of each heat treatment batch of 4340 steel specimens to ensure reproducibility of results obtained from slow strain rate tests. Keywords: Australia. Book excerpt: Slow strain rate methods are used to quantify the degree of embrittlement in high-strength 4340 steel after coating with porous electroplated cadmium or ion-vapor-deposited aluminum and subsequently exposing to aqueous sodium chloride environments for various times. Porosity in the coatings is primarily responsible for the establishment of galvanic couples at the steel/coating interface, resulting in the generation and absorption of hydrogen in the steel. Data from hydrogen permeation and galvanic corrosion experiments are used to establish a model for hydrogen generation in coated tensile specimens. Estimates of the total hydrogen absorbed in cadmium-plated tensile specimens are consistent with the results of slow strain rate tests whereas similar calculations grossly underestimate the total hydrogen absorbed in aluminum-coated specimens where localized corrosion processes are believed to enhance the rate of hydrogen generation.

Book excerpt: The barnacle electrode, an electrochemical device based on the hydrogen permeation method, was used, in conjunction with sustained load tests, to index the degree of embrittlement of 4340 steel. Flat, double notched tensile specimens of 250 ksi (1725 MPa) notched tensile strength and having a K sub T of 5.6 were shown to have a critical diffusible hydrogen concentration of 1.9, 1.7, 1.4, 1.2, 0.9 and 0.5 ppm for loads of 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 percent of the notched tensile strength. Book excerpt: This standard describes a test method for evaluating the susceptibility of uncoated cold rolled and hot rolled Ultra High Strength Steels (UHSS) to hydrogen embrittlement. The thickness range of materials that can be evaluated is limited by the ability to bend and strain the material to the specified stress level in this specification.Hydrogen embrittlement can occur with any steel with a tensile strength greater than or equal to 980 MPa. Some steel microstructures, especially those with retained austenite, may be susceptible at lower tensile strengths under certain conditions. The presence of available hydrogen, combined with high stress levels in a part manufactured from high strength steel, are necessary precursors for hydrogen embrittlement.Due to the specific conditions that need to be present for hydrogen embrittlement to occur, cracking in this test does not indicate that parts made from that material would crack in an automotive environment. Results from this test should be considered in conjunction with the strain state of the material and the operating environment of the part when selecting any UHSS. Since this test method is comparative, the most information can be gained if a control sample of known performance is evaluated along with the material being studied. Aggressive mass reduction targets for ground vehicles have led to the development of a new generation of high strength steels. Very high tensile strength as well as the presence of retained austenite as a major microstructural constituent make these steels susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.
