Book excerpt: "Anadromous sockeye salmon are the only Pacific salmon that require an extensive rearing period in a lake environment. Recent studies suggest changes in lake nutrient inputs are directly related to the magnitude of annual spawning populations (escapement), and can be quantified by sediment stable isotope analysis of nitrogen 15N). Marine nitrogen supplied by returned salmon is enriched in 15N relative to the freshwater nitrogen, which is derived from atmospheric N2 (ð15N=0 0/00). Recent (1987-1996) limnological investigations of Chilkat Lake, Alaska, matched to brood year escapement estimates, indicate that sockeye marine-derived phosphorus and nitrogen contributed up to 87% and 20%, respectively, of the lake nutrient pool. Since salmon populations fluctuate annually, the resulting marine derived nutrient (MDN) inputs and ð15N also fluctuate. Sedimentary ð15N is positively correlated (r2=0.8605, p=0.0076, df=5) with observed escapement. Additionally, ð15N is positively related to lake paleoproductivity and inversely correlated with high concentrations of CaCO3 and glacial silt. The frequency and duration of these CaCO3 inputs are believed to be the result of climate related glacial meltwater intrusions from the Tsirku River. Thus, fluctuations in MDN can be shown to influence the overall sockeye salmon production at Chilkat Lake by controlling lake productivity"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: This special volume represents the current state of knowledge of the status of Crater Lake, an ecosystem essentially undisturbed by human activities. The lake’s natural dynamics and processes have been studied, including its special optical properties, algal nutrient limitations, pelagic bacteria, and models of the inter-relationships of thermal properties, nutrients, phytoplankton, deep-water mixing, and water budgets.

Book excerpt: Juvenile sockeye salmon rearing in Babine Lake were re-examined 22 years after the initiation of the Babine Lake Development Project (BLDP). Abundance, distribution, size, and species composition of the limnetic fish populations, including juvenile sockeye salmon, were determined by hydroacoustic and midwater trawl surveys in the autumn of 1993 and the summer and fall of 1994 and 1995 and compared to results collected before and shortly after the start of the BDLP. Our objectives were to look for: 1) changes in the abundance of juvenile sockeye relative to spawning numbers; 2) changes in the utilization of the available nursery area; and 3) the effects of increased popualtion size and density on the size and growth of juvenile sockeye.

Book excerpt: The four-year cycles in abundance, characteristic of many Fraser River stocks of sockeye salmon, provided an opportunity to study the effects of fry density on sockeye production. The investigators examined juvenile sockeye density, growth, biomass, and survival, and the density and species composition of macrozooplankton over a wide variety of initial (emergent) sockeye densities in Shuswap and Quesnel lakes. The report presents results indicating how density, macrozooplankton, and temperature affect sockeye growth and survival in the lakes.

Book excerpt: The National Marine Fisheries Service (l\rNßS) conducted an aerial survey of the beluga whale population in Cook Inlet, Alaska, during 8-14 June 1999. The 41.5 hr surveywas flown in a twin-engine, high-wing aircraft at an altitude of 244 m (800 ft) and speed of 185 km/hr (100 kt) along a trackline 1.4 km from shore, consistent with annual surveys flown each year since 1993. The flights in 1999 included one or more surveys of coastal areas around nearly the entire Inlet and 1,790 km oftransects across the Inlet. Paired, independent observers searched on the coastal (left) side of the plane, where virtually all sightings occur, while a single observer and a computer operatorldatarecorder were on the right side. In addition, each day a different visitor observed from the left side. After finding beluga groups, a series of aerial passes were made to allow at least two pairs of primary observers to make four or more counts of each group. Inter-day counts ranged from 75 to160 belugas near the Susitna River (between the Beluga and Little Susitna Rivers), 13 to 43 in Knik Arm, and 17 to 30 in Chickaloon Bay, but no belugas were found in lower Cook Inlet. The sum of the aerial estimates (using median counts from each site, not corrected for missed whales) ranged from 197 to 221 whales, depending on observer. The index count for 1999 is 217 , which is slightly higher than the index counts for 1998 (193) but lower than all index counts by NMFS observers between 1993-97
