This book was released on 1969 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of an investigation of performance evaluation and comparison methods as applied to V/STOL aircraft. Attention is given to a number of aircraft having different sizes, gross weights, geometric configurations, and propulsion systems. Particular regard is given to the use of thermal fuel energy as a common basis for evaluation and comparison of V/STOL performance. The performance capabilities of typical V/STOL aircraft are presented and compared using both dimensional and nondimensional parameters containing fuel flow rate as a variable. In addition, three aircraft of different configurations are analyzed with regard to the effects of altitude, gross weight, and payload-to-fuel load ratio on the performance capability of each aircraft as indicated by both new and conventionally used methods. The total energy concept is discussed with regard to the optimization of climb schedules, and consideration is given to the limitations which apply to the use of nondimensional parameters which are used to describe the flow regimes of V/STOL aircraft. Book excerpt: After 20 years of research, the western world has one operational V/STOL aircraft and that is a military aircraft. An examination of the technical reasons for this failure to convert research results to hardware indicates that the penalties for V/STOL capability are still too large for most applications. This cost may be reduced by improved efficiency of the propulsive lift components and use of the newly emerging augmentor technology. Payload-weight ratios of V/STOL aircraft are 10 to 20%; thus the productivity of the aircraft is very sensitive to small deficiencies or improvements in the various component efficiencies. The state of the art of some of these critical technological areas is reviewed. In particular, STOL augmentors, ground effects, and prediction methods are reviewed briefly. For VTOL, induced aerodynamics, vectoring devices, and modeling problems are reviewed. Research in these areas may significantly reduce the cost of V/STOL performance.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight-test techniques are being used to generate a data base for identification of a full-envelope aerodynamic model of a V/STOL fighter aircraft, the YAV-8B Harrier. The flight envelope to be modeled includes hover, transition to conventional flight and back to hover, STOL operation, and normal cruise. Standard V/STOL procedures such as vertical takeoff and landings, and short takeoff and landings are used to gather data in the powered-lift flight regime. Long (3 to 5 min) maneuvers which include a variety of input types are used to obtain large-amplitude control and response excitations. The aircraft is under continuous radar tracking; a laser tracker is used for V/STOL operations near the ground. Tracking data are used with state-estimation techniques to check data consistency and to derive unmeasured variables, for example, angular accelerations. A propulsion model of the YAV-8B's engine and reaction control system is used to isolate aerodynamic forces and moments for model identification. Representative V/STOL flight data are presented. The processing of a typical short takeoff and slow landing maneuver is illustrated. Mcnally, B. Book Synopsis Development of Methods for Predicting V/stol Aircraft Characteristics by : SCOTT. RETHORST
Download or read book Development of Methods for Predicting V/stol Aircraft Characteristics written by SCOTT. RETHORST and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses are developed which enable prediction of the performance characteristics of a generalized spectrum of V/STOL aircraft. The analyses also define optimum configurational features within this broad spectrum. A resolution to the conflict between the hovering and forward flight regimes is provided by the analysis. Both aerodynamic and structural weight aspects are investigated. These two basic factors are analyzed separately, and then combined to provide an integrated analysis as a basis for quantitative performance prediction. The analysis defines quantitatively the performance potential of any VTOL vehicle as a function of its geometry, operating conditions, and weight. This unique potential is charted to illustrate the various trade-offs in performance characteristics available to the operator. (Author).
