Book Synopsis The Cultural Landscapes of Port au Choix by : M. A. P. Renouf

This book was released on 2011-03-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newfoundland lies at the intersection of arctic and more temperate regions and, commensurate with this geography, populations of two Amerindian and two Paleoeskimo cultural traditions occupied Port au Choix, in northern Newfoundland, Canada, for centuries and millennia. Over the past two decades The Port au Choix Archaeology Project has sought a comparative understanding of how these different cultures, each with their particular origin and historical trajectory, adapted to the changing physical and social environments, impacted their physical surroundings, and created cultural landscapes. This volume brings together the research of Renouf, her colleagues and her students who together employ multiple perspectives and methods to provide a detailed reconstruction and understanding of the long-term history of Port au Choix. Although geographically focussed on a northern coastal area, this volume has wider implications for understanding archaeological landscapes, human-environment interactions and hunter-gatherer societies.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international symposium Towards an Integrated Global Geodetic Observing System was an initiative of section II Advanced Space Technology of the International Association of Geodesy (lAG). Ittook place in the building ofthe Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich from October 5 -9, 1998. About 130 scientists from 24 countries participated in the symposium. It was organized jointly by the Deutsches Geodatisches F orschungsinstitut and the Institut fUr Astronomische und Physikalische Geodasie/Technische Universitat MUnchen. The objective of the symposium was an analysis of the state-of-art of geodetic space techniques and an outlook into the possibility of the establishment of a global integrated observing system. In view of the fact that most geodetic space techniques have reached or approach the one part per billion relative precision level the question arises what their j oint and coordinated operation could offer to the study of system Earth. For this purpose the symposium was divided into four themes, i. e. reference system and datum integration, strength and weakness of space techniques, upcoming gravity field satellite missions, and implications for Earth sciences. Each of these themes was addressed by invited lectures of prominent scientists with sufficient time left for discussion. The oral sessions were complemented by poster sessions. A panel discussion at the closing session completed the program.

Book Synopsis Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada's National Parks by : David M. Welch
Download or read book Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada's National Parks written by David M. Welch and published by [Halifax, N.S.] : Parks Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parks Canada has adopted an ecological integrity monitoring framework to guide its biennial assessment of the parks system. This paper focusses on the search for indicators of geological, geomorphological, and soil features, processes, & stresses for that framework. The paper describes indicators developed by the International Union of Geological Sciences, the Canadian Environmental Monitoring & Assessment Network, and the author that have been combined into one list, and assesses each indicator for three criteria: management relevance, linkage with other indicators, and practicality for monitoring. A short list of selected indicators is proposed for further consideration for national park system monitoring. The author also selects indicators that seem best matched to the local environment in five national parks in order to show the variation in indicators among local situations.
