Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to develop prescriptions for strategically placing safety stocks in an arborescent supply chain in which there are moderate to severe risks of disruptions in supply. Our work builds off of recently published work by Graves and Willems (2003) that demonstrates that a simple-to-compute, congestion-based adjustment to supply lead times, first developed by Ettl et al. (2000), can be embedded in a non-linear optimization problem to minimize total investment in safety stock across the entire supply chain. We are interested in investigating how the Graves and Willems (GW) model performs under uncertainty in supply. We first propose an adjustment to the model (Mod-GW) by considering two types of fulfillment times, a normal fulfillment time and a worst possible fulfillment time, which allows us to account for supply uncertainty, or disruptions in supply. We evaluate the performance of GW and Mod-GW using Monte Carlo simulation and, using motivation from Timed-Petri Net analysis, develop an Informed Safety Stock Adjustment (ISSA) algorithm to compute the additional buffer stock levels necessary to improve downstream service performance to the target level. We find that the service performance of the Mod-GW solution is most sensitive to the probability of disruption at any node in the supply chain, requiring higher safety stock adjustments through ISSA as this probability increases. In particular, the relative value of the holding costs for components and finished goods--and the resulting impact on where safety stock is held in the network--is an important moderating factor in determining the level of service performance degradation of the Mod-GW solution as either, the probability of disruption at node j, or, the ratio of the disrupted and normal lead times, increases (i.e., as disruptions exert more impact on the network). The Informed Safety Stock Adjustment algorithm generally suggests a sufficient complementary amount to the saf.

State-of-the-art multi-echelon inventory optimization models, such as the guaranteed-service approach, are non-linear and depend on statistical, time-series-based approaches that require distributional and parametric assumptions. We propose a data-driven, non-parametric and distribution-free approach for safety stock planning in multi-echelon inventory networks that utilizes historical demand and feature data. We extend data-driven optimization in inventory control from newsvendor models to multi-period and multi-echelon problems. Our model accommodates general, acyclic multi-echelon networks and simultaneously determines safety stock allocation and sizing by setting cost-optimal base stocks for all stages under consideration of service requirements. By developing a mixed-integer programming formulation and a Benders decomposition method, we offer a novel methodological approach to a well-studied problem that can be solved with commercial mathematical programming solvers. We also provide a probabilistic analysis of the data-driven performance relative to an oracle solution when sample data is limited. We show that the mixed integer programming approach is scalable by solving 38 large-scale supply chain benchmark networks with assembly, distribution, and general structures.

This thesis analyzes this problem by utilizing the framework of deterministic service time models and provides an algorithm for safety stock placement in general-network supply chains. We first show that the general problem is NP-hard. Next, we develop several conditions that characterize an optimal solution of the general-network problem. We find that we can identify all possible candidates for the optimal service times for a stage by constructing paths from the stage to each other stage in the supply chain. We use this construct, namely these paths, as the basis for a branch and bound algorithm for the general-network problem. To generate the lower bounds, we create and solve a spanning-tree relaxation of the general-network problem. We provide a polynomial algorithm to solve these spanning tree problems. We perform a set of computational experiments to assess the performance of the general-network algorithm and to determine how to set various parameters for the algorithm. In addition to the general network case, we consider two-layer network problems. We develop a specialized branch and bound algorithm for these problems and show computationally that it is more efficient than the general-network algorithm applied to the two-layer networks.

Optimizing inventory location and level of safety stock at all supply chain partners is essential in high competitive markets to manage uncertain demand and service level. Many works have been developed to optimize the location of safety stock along supply chain, which is important for fast response to fluctuation in demand. However, most of these studies focus on the design stage of a supply chain. Because demand at different horizon times may vary according to different reasons such as the entry of different competitors on market or seasonal demand, safety stock should be optimized accordingly. At the planning (tactical) level, safety stock can be controlled according to each planning horizon to satisfy customer demand at lower cost instead of being fixed by a decision taken at the strategic level. On the other hand, most studies that consider safety stock optimization are tied to a specific system structure such as serial, assembly, or distribution structure. This research focuses on formulating two different models. First, a multi- echelon safety stock optimization (MESSO) model for general supply chain topology is formulated. Then, it is converted into a robust form (RMESSO) which considers all possible fluctuation in demand and gives a solution that is valid under any circumstances. Second, the safety stock optimization model is integrated with tactical supply chain planning (SCP) for manufacturing systems. The integrated model is a multi-objective mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model. This model aims to minimize the total cost and total time. A case study for each model is provided and the numerical results are analyzed.
