Wisconsin, coined the "Dairy State", ranks second among states in fluid milk production in the USA producing 13.5% of its total fluid milk. Cheese production in Wisconsin is of particular importance as Wisconsin ranks first in cheese manufacturing producing 25.7% of the total USA production. Cheese production has added importance to Wisconsin as it is not only a directly exportable good, but also because whey (a by-product of cheese production) is also a common export market commodity (in the form of dried whey powder and various dried whey concentrates and fractions).
