The majority of the balance sheets were created especially for this project, their components gleaned from fragmentary and heterogeneous data. Book excerpt: This research proposes a parametric estimation of the structural dynamic efficiency measures proposed in 2009 by Silva and Oude Lansink. Overall, technical and allocative efficiency measurements are derived based on a directional distance function and the duality between this function and the optimal value function. The applicability of the parametric proposal is illustrated by assessing dynamic efficiency ratings for a sample of Dutch dairy farms observed from 1995 to 2005. Dynamic efficiency ratings indicate the possibility to achieve long-run cost savings on the order of 12% that are mainly to be accomplished through a reduction in input use.

The field of network DEA extends and complements conventional DEA by considering not only inputs and outputs when measuring system efficiency, but also the internal structure of the system being analyzed. By analyzing the efficiency of individual internal components, and more particularly by studying the effects of relationships among components which are modeled and implemented by means of various network structures, the “network DEA” approach is able to help identify and manage the specific components that contribute inefficiencies into the overall systems. This relatively new approach comprises an important analytical tool based on mathematical programming techniques, with valuable implications to production and operations management.
