Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little is currently known about the demographic impact of most development projects and the ways in which this impact can be assessed. This book, based on studies in Third World countries, focuses on conceptual, methodological and policy issues in its evaluation of the demographic impact of development projects. The author examines whether demographic effects can be assessed and why development planners should be interested in the results. A.S. Oberai examines to what extent economic and social ranges generated by specific development interventions have influenced demographic behavior in a particular context. He suggests how desired effects can be enhanced and undesirable effects minimized by policy-makers and planners in developing countries in order to deal with problems of population growth and its distribution. The major shortcomings of existing methodologies are identified and future directions which research might take are outlined. The study is based on a synthesis of country studiesreviewing the demographic impact of development projects carried out in Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. It also includes analyses of the demographic impact of development interventions in several other countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, and Nigeria. Published for the International Labour Organisation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale industrial and energy-development projects are profoundly affecting the social and economic climate of rural areas across the nation, creating a need for extensive planning information, both to prepare for the effects of such developments and to meet state and federal environmental impact assessment requirements. This book examines alternative methods of modelling the economic, demographic, public service, fiscal, and social impacts of major development projects. The authors provide a synthesis of the conceptual bases, estimation techniques, data requirements, and types of output available, focusing on models that address multiple impact dimensions and produce information at the county and subcounty levels. They also look at the kind of data each model produces in each impact category.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is long-standing debate on how population growth affects national economies. A new report from Population Matters examines the history of this debate and synthesizes current research on the topic. The authors, led by Harvard economist David Bloom, conclude that population age structure, more than size or growth per se, affects economic development, and that reducing high fertility can create opportunities for economic growth if the right kinds of educational, health, and labor-market policies are in place. The report also examines specific regions of the world and how their differing policy environments have affected the relationship between population change and economic development.

Book excerpt: This book examines the nature and significance of the impact of population growth on the weIl-being of developing countries-in particular, the effects on economic growth, education, health, food supply, housing, poverty, and the environment. In addition, because family planning programmes often significantly affect population growth, the study examines the impacts of family planning on fertility and health, and the human rights implications of family planning programmes. In considering the book's conclusions about the impact of population growth on development, four caveats should be noted. First, the effects of population growth vary from place to place and over time. Thus, blanket statements about overall effects often cannot be made. Where possible, the authors note the contexts in which population effects are strongest and weakest. Second, all of the outcomes examined in this book are influenced by factors other than population growth. Moreover, the impact of population growth may itself vary according to the presence or absence of other factors. This again makes bl anket statements about the effects of population growth difficult. Throughout the chapters, the authors try to identify other relevant factors that influence the outcomes we discuss or that influence the impact of population growth on those outcomes.

Book excerpt: Over the next few decades, the world will experience significant demographic shifts, with material fiscal implications. In many advanced and emerging market economies, aging populations will lead to higher spending on pensions and health care. Moreover, projected population dynamics will adversely affect growth and government revenues. Building on and extending a 2015 IMF Staff Discussion Note by Clements and others, this note presents a simple framework that can assist researchers in quantifying the effects of demographic changes resulting from population aging on government fiscal balances. It includes two country applications of the framework and an associated template. The note addresses several key questions: What are channels through which demographic changes could affect public finances? How can we quantify the fiscal impact of demographic changes? How can we tailor the assessment to country-specific circumstances?

Book excerpt: Designed to provide clear and detailed assistance in the complex process of assessing social change, this book emphasizes the development of an analytic approach and a theoretical framework that can be applied to the assessment of very diverse events--changes in the natural environment, the local economy, or the dominant technology. The guide, based on a sociological perspective that highlights the importance of community social organization in analyzing social change, focuses on the development of user skills in assessment design, research, analysis, and presentation. The guide's theoretical basis and emphasis on the interrelationships that create social change make it valuable to those studying social change in general, as well as to those responsible for conducting or utilizing social impact assessments. Detailed "how to" information, clear writing, and careful design impart the skills necessary to identify and analyze the factors and processes leading to social change and to interpret and present research findings in an effective manner.

Book excerpt: The objective of the Pacific Northwest Regional Assessment Program is to estimate changes in the Region's environmental, socioeconomic, and health status that could result from various energy development or conservation scenarios. Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratories, uses a dynamic simulation model to help evaluate pertinent issues in the Northwest (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming). One of the primary sectors of this model is the demographic sector, which provides the needed demographic information to other model sectors. Specifically, it traces the effects of various energy development scenarios on employment and population growth. The demographic sector simulates the interactions among the population, birth rate, death rate, net migration rate, and jobs available in the Region from 1960 to 2020. The population is disaggregated so that age-specific birth and death rates, age-specific propensity to migrate, and age-specific labor force participation rates can be used.
