Toutefois, celles-ci s'accordent à démontrer que d'une part le diabète est un facteur de risque susceptible de favoriser le développement d'une parodontite et d'autre part, que l'infection parodontale semblerait avoir une influence sur l'équilibre glycémique. L'assainissement parodontal se présenterait alors comme une forme de « médecine parodontale ». L'objectif de ce travail est d'analyser la relation bidirectionnelle qui lie le diabète de type 2 et la maladie parodontale, puis d'illustrer cette partie fondamentale par une étude de cas, portant sur 8 patients atteints de diabète de type 2, présentant une parodontite chronique modérée à sévère. Les paramètres étudiés sont biologiques (HbA1c) et parodontaux (indice de plaque, indice gingival, profondeur de poches au sondage > 4mm). Les résultats préliminaires suggèrent une tendance à l'amélioration des paramètres tant métaboliques que parodontaux, et ce, après une réévaluation à 3 mois et 6 mois post thérapeutique initiale.
