Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haverhill's immigrants--they came for the jobs that were so plentiful in the booming shoe industry. They came to flee poverty, insecurity, and massacres. They came because their relatives had come before them, or because they would find old neighbors in this new place. Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the early twentieth century was a magnet for newcomers. They came from such diverse and faraway places as Asia Minor and Eastern Europe. They were Poles and Lithuanians, Greeks and Armenians, and Italians and French-Canadians. They joined the Yankees and Irish who had previously immigrated to the city. The result was a wonderful mix of customs, languages, religions, and names. The images in this book are family treasures. They have been lovingly taken down from places of honor on living room walls. They have come from boxes of family photographs, carefully preserved for future generations. Some photographs traveled with the immigrants from their homes far away. In all, this book offers a loving glimpse of some of the many people who helped to shape modern Haverhill.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek-Turkish War of 1919–1923—also known as the Western Front of the Turkish War of Liberation and the Asia Minor Campaign—was one of the key aftershocks of the First World War. Internationally better known for its aftermath, the Compulsory Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey, the Catastrophe of Ottoman Greeks, and the foundation of the Republic of Turkey under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the war has never been given a holistic treatment in English, despite its long shadow over the Greek-Turkish relationship. The contributors in this volume address this gap by brining to the fore, on its centenary, aspects of the onset, conduct, and aftermath of this war. Combining insights from the study of international relations, political science, strategic studies, military history, migration studies, and social history the contributions tell the story of leaders and decisions, battles and campaigns, voluntary and involuntary migration, and the human stories of suffering and resilience. It is aspects of the story of the last gasp of the Great War in Europe, brought to its final end with Treaty of Lausanne of 1923.

Book excerpt: The story of the "Silent Generation" is based on the biographical recollections of six survivors and their families of the Ottoman Empire's Genocide against its Armenian populace. Although each survivor's odyssey is distinctly unique, together they represent the depth and overwhelming tragedy that engulfed more than 2 million people. Today but a small scattering of survivors are alive. Sadly, for almost 100 years their voices were quashed by guilt, remorse, fear and an attempt to protect their heirs from the horrors they had escaped. The Silent Generation attempts to pause, look back, listen and give voice to what happened a century ago.
