Download or read book Joint Arthroplasty written by Shinichi Imura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of total joint arthroplasty throughout the world has contributed manifold benefits to patients who suffer from joint diseases. Concurrently, however, there has been an increase in revision surgery. Many orthopedic surgeons agree that durability of prostheses is an eternal problem. In particular, periprosthetic osteolysis recently has been identified as one of the serious problems affecting prosthetic dura bility. To improve durability, osteolysis and many other problems must be investi gated and solved both experimentally and clinically with respect to such aspects as prosthetic material, design, and biological and biomechanical behavior. This book comprises 37 papers that were presented by orthopedic surgeons and biomedical engineers at the 28th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Replace ment Arthroplasty, held in March 1998 in Kanazawa, Japan. The volume is thus a compilation of the latest knowledge about the pathogenesis and reduction of osteolysis and wear, newly developed total hip prostheses, and other current topics of total knee arthroplasty. We earnestly hope that this book will be of benefit to clinicians and researchers, and that it will contribute to the creation of more durable total joint prostheses in the future. Book Synopsis Children and Drug Safety by : Cynthia A Connolly
Download or read book Children and Drug Safety written by Cynthia A Connolly and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 Arthur J. Viseltear Award from the Medical Care Section of the American Public Health Association Children and Drug Safety traces the development, use, and marketing of drugs for children in the twentieth century, a history that sits at the interface of the state, business, health care providers, parents, and children. This book illuminates the historical dimension of a clinical and policy issue with great contemporary significance—many of the drugs administered to children today have never been tested for safety and efficacy in the pediatric population. Each chapter of Children and Drug Safety engages with major turning points in pediatric drug development; themes of children’s risk, rights, protection and the evolving context of childhood; child-rearing; and family life in ways freighted with nuances of race, class, and gender. Cynthia A. Connolly charts the numerous attempts by Congress, the Food and Drug Administration, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and leading pediatric pharmacologists, scientists, clinicians, and parents to address a situation that all found untenable. This book tells the history of ten prominent substances and how they came to be common household names. It shows how the creation of such influential drugs often began with the right person at the exactly right—or wrong!— time. The chapters tell the stories of geniuses and charlatans; scholars and amateurs; advances won through hard work or pure luck; and ultimately, the handful of resounding successes that revolutionized a global industry. Beyond the pioneers of the most famous drugs in our culture, the book analyzes how our perspective on medical treatment has shifted over the decades. Modern standards for testing and administering substances have created a new set of advantages, setbacks, and stigmas, all of which are discussed herein.
Book Synopsis The Fall and Rise of Aspirin by : Peter Sheldon
Download or read book The Fall and Rise of Aspirin written by Peter Sheldon and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has long been interested in how plant derived substances can prove beneficial to Medicine. Writings on papyrus from the earliest times have described the use of willow bark for soothing inflamed wounds. Major contributions by the Reverend Edward Stone of Chipping Norton, and Dr. Thomas Maclagan of Dundee are covered, along with the unique discovery by Professor John Vane and his team, of the fundamental effect of aspirin on prostaglandin synthesis. The book includes fascinating memorabilia on the early days of aspirin, kindly donated from the Bayer archive. In his first book on the foxglove, the author described how Nature's gift of digitalis came to become accepted worldwide as a valuable treatment for heart failure. Now, he has explored the bark of the willow, from which by chemical modification, aspirin was obtained. But whereas up to now, digitalis (in its current form, digoxin), only has a place in the treatment of heart disease, aspirin ? the world's most ubiquitous pain killer, has in the last half-century, been shown also to prevent heart attacks and strokes. And in addition it may soon come into use in cancer prevention. The author is currently a practising consultant rheumatologist at Leicester Royal Infirmary who, in former years, prescribed prodigious amounts of aspirin for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. As an immunologist at the University of Leicester, he has taught medical students from the inception of its medical school.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years, we have witnessed tremendous progress in the field of eicosanoids and their therapeutic applications. Receptor an tagonists for leukotrienes have been tested as anti-inflammatories and are on the market as a treatment for asthma. Receptor agonists for pro stacyclin are being tested for the treatment of peripheral vascular dis ease, and selective inhibitors of cyclooxygenase type II were just ap proved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. All these developments are the culmination of many years and man-hours of careful research. The field has now entered an upswing that will result in novel thera peutic applications within the next 10 years. New molecules and me diators have been identified, new enzymes and pathways elucidated and new therapeutic approaches have emerged. The concept of ei cosanoids as "pro-inflammatory" molecules is being challenged, and their role as regulators is increasingly recognized. In fact, some of these molecules may be important endogenous anti-inflammatory agents.

Download or read book Ginseng and Aspirin written by Zibin Guo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigating the maze of modern American health care is rarely easy; those who enter it are confronted with a dizzying array of specialists, practitioners, and clinics from which to choose, and are forced to make decisions regarding drugs and treatments about which they may know very little. For immigrants, finding their way can be difficult--especially for those to whom Western medicine is itself unfamiliar. In this engaging, accessible, and detail-rich book, Zibin Guo narrates elderly Chinese immigrants' response to contemporary American medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes self-care and the medicinal value of foods and herbs; American doctors' responses to the ailments of their Chinese patients can seem impersonal and unnecessarily interventionist. Distrust, expense, and problems of communication and interpretation often frustrate both patient and practitioner.Guo paints a picture of a population that, despite its outward appearance of homogeneity, demonstrates a surprisingly wide variety of health-care knowledge, practice, and belief. Using case materials and interviews, he analyzes the blend of folk treatments and respect for Western science that coexist in the health care regimens of these elderly Chinese immigrants.
