The ability of hearers to identify and localize these signals depends on analysis of their spectral composition. For the overwhelming majority of human listeners spoken language is the major means of social communication, and this communication therefore depends on spectral analysis. Spectral analysis begins in the cochlea, but is then elaborated at various stages along the auditory pathways in the brain that lead from the cochlea to the cerebral cortex. The broad purpose of Auditory Spectral Processing is to provide a comprehensive account of the way in which spectral information is processed in the brain and the way in which this information is used by listeners to identify and localize sounds. The work on the relation between CMR and the MLD has suggested that part of the MLD is based upon an analysis of dip information in the stimulus waveform. The work on Mechanisms of modulation detection interference (MDI) has supported the across channel nature of MDI, and has reinforced the notion that MDI depends upon the average modulation frequency, but not upon the specific modulation pattern or phase. Results suggest that the effect is widely tuned for carrier frequency, and that MDI may not be the most appropriate paradigm for investigating grouping by common modulation, where carrier specific information must be maintained. The present proposal therefore utilizes paradigms other than MDI. Studies on CMR for suprathreshold signals indicated that large CMR effects are restricted to stimuli presented near detection threshold. Furthermore, CMR information CMR information available at low SLs appears to be coarse, resulting in large DLs for amplitude discrimination, and in poor gap thresholds. Companion experiments on the MLD indicated that the magnitude of suprathreshold masking release was highly similar for the MLD and CMR. In the work on CMR and Auditory Grouping we have investigated the notion that CMR can basically be understood as an auditory grouping process. When a comodulated noise background exists, the individual narrow bands of noise comprising the stimulus may be interpreted as a single auditory source, by virtue of the comodulation among the bands. When a single pure tone signal is presented in one of the bands, a possible cue for the detection of the signal is the change in the envelope of the on signal band that does not occur in the other bands.

The stimuli were non-speech, non- musical, tone sequences that conveyed arhythmic or partly rhythmic time patterns. The results indicated that the temporal pattern discrimination process depends on the timing of the sequences and whether they overlap in time. Listeners can perform the task very well when the patterns do not overlap and are presented to separate ears and/or at different tone frequencies. At long time separations, the listener's discrimination mechanism reduces the input information to two lists of intertone times, and the decision is based on the correlation between the lists (a temporal correlation process). At short time separations, the mechanism computes statistics based on the summed envelope of the two input waveforms (a single channel process). The project's second component consisted of analytical and computer modeling of multi-element detection systems. New results were obtained on the performance of statistically optimal detector arrays and on arrays that combine their binary outputs. The project's third component studied how observers process information in multi- element, visual signal detection. The results describe how performance depends on display element reliability, coding and arrangement. The small number of active par tiCipants has the advantage of encouraging intense dis cussions and of avoiding overloading the program. On the other hand, selecting the partiCipants is difficult.

Book excerpt: This book contains the papers that were presented at the XIIIth International Symposium on Hearing (ISH), which was held in Dourdan, France, between August 24 and 29, 2003. From its first edition in 1969, the Symposium has had a distinguished tradition of bringing together auditory psychologists and physiologists. Hearing science now also includes computational modeling and brain imaging, and this is reflected in the papers collected. The rich interactions between participants during the meeting were yet another indication of the appositeness of the original idea to confront approaches around shared scientific issues. A total of 62 solicited papers are included, organized into 12 broad thematic areas ranging from cochlear signal processing to plasticity and perceptual learning. The themes follow the sessions and the chronological order of the paper presentations during the symposium. A notable feature of the ISH books is the transcription of the discussions between participants. A draft version of the book is circulated before the meeting, and all participants are invited to make written comments, before or during the presentations. This particularity is perhaps what makes the ISH book series so valuable as a truthful picture of the evolution of issues in hearing science. We tried to uphold this tradition, which was all the easier because of the excellent scientific content of the discussions.
