Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Elements of Science That a work should be written which might introduce students to the elements of all the sciences, has long seemed to the author of this book a thing to be desired. Having been unable to find associates for this purpose, he has ventured to undertake it himself. Strongly convinced that the student ought to be introduced to mental as well as to physical science, the writer has been careful not to omit the elements of psychology, logic, and philosophy, subjects which he thinks have been far too generally neglected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Science The object in such a course of study as in all other courses of study should be to teach the pupil to live, regard less of whether he withdraws from school at an early date or whether he continues his education through the high school and college. We should always be teaching a pupil what he needs and what he can use and a general science course well taught fulfils this ideal admirably. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Science This volume is not, strictly speaking, a scientific reader; its aim is simply to provide material suitable for imparting the habit of careful reading and, in a measure, the voe_abulary of scientific literature. Articles of pure science are valuable, indeed, in the hands of teachers familiar with the techni calities of the subject treated, but they lay too heavy a' burden upon the average instructor of modern languages, not to speak of the students. Our selections have therefore been made from that branch of writing which, while drawing upon facts and scientific data for material, permits the display of the author's fancy or brightness, and blends instruction with interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Social Science Social science has hitherto suffered greatly from the attempt to make it conform to methods derived from the older and more abstract sciences. It has led us, for one thing, to look for impossible results, and to be disappointed at not getting them. We inquire, for example, after the manner of physical sciences, which of two related social phenomena is cause and which effect. It usually turns out, in the social sphere, that both are cause and both are effect. Does the kind of education account for the standard of intelligence in a community? True, but does not the standard of intelligence account for the standard of education? Was Slavery in the ancient world due in part to the lack of technical development Doubtless, but was not the lack of technical development due in part to the institution of slavery? Was the severity of the criminal code a hundred years ago due to the amount of crime? May it not be replied that the amount of crime was also due to the severity of the criminal code? Are low wages a cause of poverty Yes, but is not poverty a cause of low wages? Intemperance is a source of destitution, but destitution is also a source of intemperance. Such examples could be multiplied indefinitely. One can reverse, with some degree of truth, almost any statement of social causation. Social causation is nearly always reciprocal. Unless we realize this fact we will be asking wrong questions and finding wrong answers - though questions of a type that might be legitimately asked in other scientific Spheres where another kind of causation prevails. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light Side of Science Carbonic acid gas and its Story - Mechanisms Of breathing - Gills and lungs - Their respective functions in fishes. The fact that our chests rise and fall fifteen or sixteen times a minute in the act of respiration or breathing is so familiar that it almost escapes popular recognition through its practically auto matic continuous nature. Breathing is one of those actions, which, while absolutely essential for the maintenance of life, and which, performed for the most part unconsciously, yet lie somewhat under the control of the will. Physiologists call breathing a secondary automatic action, in order to distinguish it from those functions of the body with which we cannot interfere. The duties of digestion, the making of bile, the formation of saliva, the ow of tears, the expansion or contraction of the blood vessels - are acts which proceed independently of our will and consciousness, and they are undoubtedly performed all the more perfectly in that we have no need to concern ourselves about them at all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physics IN revising Dr. Houston's Elements of Natural Philosophy, the attempt has been made to preserve the method of present ing the subject which gave the book its great attraction. In order to bring it up to the requirements of the present day High School and College Preparatory work, it has been neces sary to introduce much more of the mathematical form of treatment than the earlier book contained. It is believed that all that is necessary for such work has been introduced, while for those who do not care for this method, or for whose pupils it is considered too diflicult, it will be found that much of the mathematics has been put in smaller type, or is most fully devel 0ped in the Appendix. Many new drawings have been added, mostly in the form of diagrams, as this is believed to be the best method for teaching purposes. The problems have been greatly increased in number and graded in difficulty. No attempt has been made to cover all the subject of physics, as the book is intended for one year's work. It has been the reviser's experience that when the sub ject matter covered is too large, the eflect upon the pupil is disheartening. The material presented, however, covers all the necessary requirements of the field the book is intended to occupy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by the philosopher A.J. Ayer as a work of 'great originality and power', this book revolutionized contemporary thinking on science and knowledge. Ideas such as the now legendary doctrine of 'falsificationism' electrified the scientific community, influencing even working scientists, as well as post-war philosophy. This astonishing work ranks alongside The Open Society and Its Enemies as one of Popper's most enduring books and contains insights and arguments that demand to be read to this day.
