Book Synopsis Industrial Relations in Education by : Bob Carter
Download or read book Industrial Relations in Education written by Bob Carter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All phases of education from pre-school to post-compulsory, in virtually all parts of the world, have experienced unprecedented reform and restructuring in recent years. Restructuring has largely been driven by a global agenda that has promoted the development of human capital as the key to economic competitiveness in the global market. This book adopts an inter-disciplinary approach drawing not only on education research but also from the fields of industrial sociology, management studies and labour process theory to locate the reform agenda within a wider picture relating to teachers, their professional identities and their experience of work. In doing so the book draws on critical perspectives that seek to challenge orthodox policy discourses relating to remodelling. Illustrating of how education policy is shaped by discourses within the wider socio-political environment and how unionization and inter-organizational bargaining between unions exerts a decisive, but often ignored, influence on policy development at both a State and institutional level, this book is a must read for anyone researching or studying employment relations.

Drawing on a wealth of research, Exploring the School Leadership Landscape critically considers the ways in which school leadership and its practice have evolved, exploring what has changed and what has remained the same over the last decade. Both empirically and theoretically informed, it covers: - the relationship between leadership and student learning - school autonomy, accountability and the market - leadership and governance - leadership intensification and distribution - new models including system leadership. This book is essential reading for school leaders, policy-makers and students, and provides a comprehensive exploration of the changing leadership landscape for anyone concerned about the future of our schools.
Book Synopsis Reassessing the Impact of Teaching Assistants by : Peter Blatchford
Download or read book Reassessing the Impact of Teaching Assistants written by Peter Blatchford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, teaching assistants (TAs) have become an established part of everyday classroom life. TAs are often used by schools to help low-attaining pupils and those with special educational needs. Yet despite the huge rise in the number of TAs working in UK classrooms, very little is known about their impact on pupils. This key and timely text examines the impact of TAs on pupils’ learning and behaviour, and on teachers and teaching. The authors present the provocative findings from the ground-breaking and seminal Deployment and Impact of Support Staff (DISS) project. This was the largest, most in-depth study ever to be carried out in this field. It critically examined the effect of TA support on the academic progress of 8,200 pupils, made extensive observations of nearly 700 pupils and over 100 TAs, and collected data from over 17,800 questionnaire responses and interviews with over 470 school staff and pupils. This book reveals the extent to which the pupils in most need are let down by current classroom practice. The authors present a robust challenge to the current widespread practices concerning TA preparation, deployment and practice, structured around a conceptually and empirically strong explanatory framework. The authors go on to show how schools need to change if they are to realise the potential of TAs. With serious implications not just for classroom practice, but also whole-school, local authority and government policy, this will be an indispensable text for primary, secondary and special schools, senior management teams, those involved in teacher training and professional development, policy-makers and academics.

Book Synopsis Education in the Balance by : Raphael Wilkins
Download or read book Education in the Balance written by Raphael Wilkins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education in the Balance explores the significant choices and opportunities worldwide that are opening up to school leaders of the future for the development of schools and school systems. It argues that the judgments of individuals in leadership positions in a wide range of settings, including ministries of education, schools, private companies and NGOs may, cumulatively, have unintended implications for schools and school systems. In failing to give sufficient consideration to alternative approaches, opportunities to achieve greater or more widespread educational benefits may be missed. The future of school education depends on the quality of its leaders and on the readiness of leadership to act for the long term and with a sense of global responsibility. What knowledge, skills and attributes will new leaders of schools need, and how can they be developed? Raphael Wilkins maps out these issues, drawing on his first-hand experience as an international consultant in education leadership. This book supports the strategic leadership of schools and school systems, by mapping global issues and developments, helping leaders to reflect on their chosen pathways and options, and to identify their own professional development needs.
