Book Synopsis Nominalization in Latin by : Olga Spevak
Download or read book Nominalization in Latin written by Olga Spevak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is devoted to verbal nouns, defined as nouns which have a systematic correspondence with a clause structure. This book aims to contribute to the much-debated question of "abstract nouns" in general and "verbal derivatives" in particular by showing that syntactic parameters are useful for a better classification of what are traditionally called nomina actionis. It adopts a descriptive approach and it provides methods and criteria for identifying these nouns, which retain some verbal properties and for distinguishing them from nouns with concrete reference. This distinction is important for a better understanding of Latin texts and for the presentation of these words in dictionaries. This book investigates the use of verbal nouns in various text types: narrative texts and technical treatises (rhetoric, architecture, and legal texts). It shows that verbal nouns, as well as gerunds, gerundives, participles in participial clauses, and partly also infinitives, are competing expressions with a low "sententiality" that serve, to different extents, to condensate clausal expressions. They form a system, in which the elements are partly overlapping and partly complementary. The fact that Latin does not have a verbal noun available for every verb should not be viewed as a "deficiency", but as a facet of this complex system"--

Book Synopsis The Romance reflexes of the Latin infixes –I/ESC- and -IDI-: restructuring and remodeling processes. by : Claire Meul
Download or read book The Romance reflexes of the Latin infixes –I/ESC- and -IDI-: restructuring and remodeling processes. written by Claire Meul and published by Helmut Buske Verlag. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Latin Language by : Leonard Robert Palmer
Download or read book The Latin Language written by Leonard Robert Palmer and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent study traces the relation of Latin to other Indo-European languages and guides the reader lucidly through Latin phonology, morphology, and syntax. It should prove fascinating not only to Latinists but also to linguists generally and, expecially, to students of Romance languages. Over the years, readers have found that Palmer’s treatment of this so-called dead language reveals Latin’s continuing vitality and "soul."

Book Synopsis Jacob Wackernagel, Lectures on Syntax by : David Langslow
Download or read book Jacob Wackernagel, Lectures on Syntax written by David Langslow and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an English version of two series of highly acclaimed introductory lectures given by the great Swiss linguist and classical philologist Jacob Wackernagel (1853-1938) at the University of Basle in 1918-19 on aspects of Greek, Latin, and German as languages. Out of print in German since 1996, these lectures remain the best available introduction, in any language, not only to Greek, Latin, and comparative syntax but also to many topics in the history and pre-history of Greek and Latin, and their relations with other languages. Other subjects, such as the history of grammatical terminology, are also brilliantly dealt with. This new edition supplements the German original by providing a translation of all quotations and examples, a large number of detailed footnotes offering background information and suggestions for further reading, and a single bibliography which brings together Wackernagel's references and those added in the notes.
